Notes for GEORGE & CAROLINE (WESTBROOK) BEAT(T)Y:

  • Caroline’s Parents were both born in VA according to the 1880 US census (IA). George’s also are shown from AL???  All other sources indicated PA for dad and KY for mom.
  • In most documents, George generally spelled his surname BEATY. Caroline and the children generally spelled it BEATTY.  Through various official sources the name was spelled in the following ways:  BEATY, BEATTY, BATEY, BATY.  It appears that there was no consistency in the early days, although once they settled in CO in 1904, it stabilized as BEATTY. 
  • Caroline WESTBROOK’ s last name is variously spelled also:  WESTBROOK, WESTBROOKS.
  • George’ s middle initial varies depending on source: “C” & “W”.  Although the W is probably correct, it seems he used a C in Hancock Co., IL, as that is what appears on their marriage certificate, and in the 1870 census. 
  • George and Caroline were married Tuesday, Oct 17, 1865 in Hancock Co., IL.  Their marriage was performed by George W. Miller, a “Minister of the Gospel.”  A marriage location is not noted on either the register, nor on their license.  Miller also performed at least 6 other marriages between Oct 15 and Nov 1, 1865.  All are listed on the portion of the Marriage Register copy I have.
  • I have NOT been able to determine where George lived between the 1860 census (when he was in Franklin Co., IL) and prior to the wedding in 1865.  After their marriage, it appears they lived in Carthage, as they appear there in the 1870 census. 
  • They moved to Guthrie Co., IA sometime between 1877 and 1880 as they were listed in the 1880 census there.
  • They then moved to Tingley, Ringgold Co., IA between the 1880 census and the birth of son John in July 1883.   While in Tingley, George purchased some property, and he & Caroline sold it back and forth! That property is described thusly: 
    • “Lot #Six (6) of the South West Quarter of the South East Quarter (SW Ό, SEΌ) of Section Sixteen (16) Township (70) Seventy Range Twenty nine (29) West 5th P.M. containing five (5) acres more or less.”   
  • They were still there in 1899, as George and family were listed on page 107 of the 1899 Directory of Tingley Township.
  • They then followed the Charles & Nellie (BEATTY) SPECK family to Loveland, Larimer Co., CO around 1904.  In the Larimer Co. land records, Neither George or Caroline’s names appear in the land records, so it appears they either rented the house they lived in, or it was owned by another family member. 
    • In Loveland, they resided at 136 S. Lincoln Ave.  After George’s death, Caroline and family are still listed in the 1907 through 1919 city/county directories. 
  • In 1908 Fred, Grace & John still lived with mom.
  • In 1917, Grace was still there, but was gone in 1919, at which time only Fred remained with her. 
  • Charles & Nellie (BEATTY) SPECK moved to Upland CA in July 1907.
  • George BEATY died at home in Loveland, CO after a lingering illness at 1 a.m. Tuesday Aug 6, 1907.  His funeral was 10 a.m. Wed., Aug 7, 1907 at the Christian Church.  He was then buried in Loveland Burial Park – Lakeside Cemetery Lot 24, Block 5, Grave 5. 
  • Caroline (Westbrook) BEATTY apparently moved to Auburn CA sometime between 1919 and 1922, as she was still listed in the 1919 Larimer Co., CO directory, but not in the 1922.  There was no 1920 or 1921 directory in the Loveland, CO library so I was unable to determine if she was still there. 
  • She died in Auburn April 21, 1932 at 90 years of age, and is buried in the Old Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Placer Co., CA.  Her grave location is SE Ό 146-3.
  • She was living with (or near) granddaughter Bertha (SPECK) SAWYER, or daughter Grace CAVANAUGH who lived there at least as late as 1947.
