notes:

James & Robert went to California in a wagon train in c1857.  They settled in the Mariposa-Bootjack area in the southwestern part of the county.  It's possible other family members came also, but they are not noted.

“The PRESTON RANCH is west of the road (Raymond Road) and over a century old.  Before that it was an Indian campsite.  Preston is a prominent and respected name in the County where descendents and relatives are legion.  James Preston came to California in 1857 via covered wagon and homesteaded soon thereafter.  His grandson Emmet Preston, the present landowner (1976), was born on the ranch in 1884; Emmet's wife, Effie Probasco Preston, was born nearby and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1962.”

[Mariposa County Guidebook, by Shirley Sargent, pg 30, 31]

“...Big Spring was the first homesite of the large Preston family, too.  Brother Robert stayed in the area, while brother James settled in the Oakvale-Ben Hur area...”  [ibid]
