Minutes - Les Guidry
d'Asteur Meeting - 6-28-2008
Bonjour Cousins,
On Saturday 28 June 2008 members of Les Guidry d'Asteur met at
the CODOFIL office in Lafayette, LA to discuss several topics of
interest to our family.
Charlene Lacombe reported that our membership drive is doing
well and we continue to gain new members. Thanks to all
who have sent their annual dues to Charlene, our membership
chairperson. We appreciate your support of Les Guidry
d'Asteur.
Financially we continue to have a good cash flow. Although
we don't have a large financial reserve, we have been able to
initiate and complete several projects of the Guédry-Labine
family.
Marty Guidry introduced the new Guédry crest at the meeting.
Several crests (coats-of-arms) claiming to represent the Guédry
family can be seen and/or purchased on the Internet and through
the mail. None are authentic to our Guédry-Labine family.
Coats-of-arms (or crests as they are often called) were
presented to individuals in Europe and not to families.
There has never been a coat-of-arms awarded to a family.
In America there is no heraldry system as in Europe so families
in North America have 'adopted' crests (coats-of-arms) to
represent themselves. The Guédry crests presently shown on
the Internet do not have any connection to our family and were
usually constructed by an individual trying to sell them for a
profit.
At the suggestion of several family members we have developed a
Guédry family crest that briefly tells the story of our Guédry
family through symbols (charges) and colors (tinctures) on the
crest. A draft of the Guédry crest was shown at the
meeting along with a written explanation of what each color and
symbol means. Presently, a professonal Internet website
design company is finalizing the design and appearance of the
crest. As soon as this is complete, we will send a copy of
the Guédry crest to all members. We'll also place it on
our Guédry-Labine website.
The Guédry crest we've developed will be used as our family
crest to be placed on items of clothing, stationary, banners,
etc. as a symbol describing the history of the Guédry family.
In conjunction with the development of the Guédry crest, Les
Guidry d'Asteur has purchased one of the last remaining Family
Crests Squares at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, LA.
The Acadian Memorial initiated a project several years ago to
place large tile replicas of the Acadian family crests in the
courtyard of their complex near Bayou Teche. The cost to
each family was $1500. At the time Les Guidry d'Asteur
chose not to participate in this project because our limited
funds were needed for other projects such as the memorial plaque
to Augustin Guédry and Marie-Françoise Jeanson that we dedicated
in St. Alphonse, Nova Scotia in August 2007. With only
five locations for crests remaining the Acadian Memorial
Foundation decided to lower the cost to $500. A member of
our family loaned Les Guidry d'Asteur the funds so we could
immediately purchase one of the remaining locations. At this
time the artist contracted by the Acadian Memorial is
transferring the Guédry crest design to tile for placement in
the Acadian Memorial courtyard. It is anticipated that it
will placed in the courtyard by the middle of August 2008.
Plans for our 2009 Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion in Bathurst,
New Brunswick continue to progress. See the lastest issue
(Summer 2008) of "Generations" for all the details. Our
Reunion will be Sunday, 16 August 2008 in the Conference Center
of Danny's Inn just north of Bathurst. There will be an
excellent buffet lunch during the Reunion. We are
currently developing the agenda. We anticipate having our
opening ceremony as part of a French mass at a local church and
then move to the Conference Center with registration starting
about 9:45 am. We have a commitment from a Louisiana Cajun
band to play a segment during the Reunion and are working on
securing other activities (music, talks, etc.). There will
be an area for displays of our Guédry-Labine and Petitpas family
history and genealogy. Please consider putting together a
display on your branch of the family or some aspect of our
family. These displays really enrich everyone's Reunion
experience. We'll also have a Sales Table of family items
for purchase. If you have a book that you've written about
the Guédry-Labine and/or Petitpas family and would like to sell
copies at the Reunion, please let me know so we can reserve a
space for you. Most importantly, we will have time built
into the agenda for visitation breaks where we can meet our
cousins and see the displays.
Last week everyone should have received by e-mail the Summer
2008 edition of our newsletter "Generations". Allie Guidry
continues to do a marvelous job compiling, editing and producing
our newsletter. There are nice improvements with every
issue. Another nice touch recently is several of our
members have been submitting articles for publication in
"Generations". We thank Jo Ann Guidrey Aulick for the nice
article in the current issue about her Dad's WWII experience.
Let's keep this trend going. Take the time to jot down an
article and send it to Allie or myself. Short or long, it
doesn't matter. We have needs for a few lines about a
favorite story your grandmother told you and for a lengthy
article of a family experience or geneaolgy. Or maybe you
know a Guédry musician, athlete or other profession and could
write a short article about them. Our members enjoy
learning about the different branches of our diverse family.
Soon this issue of "Generations" will be available on our
website "The Guedry-Labine Family". After the
meeting we all went to local restaurant for some great food and
friendship.
Try to join us for our next meeting which will be
in late July or early August.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer,
Marty

Everyone's welcome and encouraged to attend. It'll be a
lot of fun.
Elaine has selected a nice cafe in Lafayette for all of us to
gather for lunch after the meeting. For those that have

Les Guidry d'Asteur Meeting - 23 February 2008
Bonjour Mes Cousins,
Before discussing our upcoming meeting, let me briefly mention
that a new year has begun - and, yes, it's the dreaded dues
reminder. Attached is a membership application for
renewing your membership in Les Guedry d'Asteur. For those
that don't like to open attachments, I've pasted the application
at the very bottom of this email. Our dues are very
reasonable at $6.00 for individuals and $10 for a family.
So, you say, why renew? We get everything free - the
website, the newsletter, the email notices, etc. You're
absolutely right - we want everyone interested in our family to
have full access to all that we offer. So it is all free.
But by joining and paying your dues, you provide us with the
financial resources to do so much more. Your dues are why
we could have a MiniReunion for the family in October 2007 and
finance the plaque of Augustin Guedry and Marie Jeanson that we
dedicated in St. Alphonse, Nova Scotia in August 2007.
Your dues are why we could place Guedry and Labine genealogical
books in various libraries throughout the United States and
Canada so our family researchers would have access to these
excellent Guedry-Labine reference books published in very
limited quantities. These are just a few of the projects that we
have done as a family because your dues provided the financial
resources.
So take a moment, complete the Membership Application, enclose a
check and send it to the address on the Application. It
will help all of us do so much more for the family. And,
if you would like to join at one of the Benefector Levels, it
would let us do even more.
On Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon
we're having a meeting of Les Guidry d'Asteur at the CODOFIL
offices in Lafayette, LA. [FOR DIRECTIONS - SEE BELOW]
We've already begun preparations for the August 2009
Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion in New Brunswick, Canada.
The Reunion will be on Saturday, August 16, 2009 in the
Bathurst, New Brunswick area.
On Saturday, October 13, 2007 we're had a Guedry-Labine &
Petitpas Family MiniReunion at Acadian Village in Lafayette,
Louisiana. It was a great success with approximately 60
folks from Louisiana and Texas attending. Everyone had a great
time and enjoyed meeting each other.
On Saturday, August 12, 2007 our Jeddry/Geddry cousins dedicated
a plaque to Augustin Guedry, the founder of the Guedry family in
the Meteghan/St. Alphonse area of Nova Scotia. Les Guedry
d'Asteur helped with planning the design and inscription on the
plaque as well as providing financial resources. Several
members of Les Guidry d'Asteur from the United States and Canada
attended. The program was very nice and was enjoyed by
all.
Begin looking for the Winter 2008 issue of "Generations" within
the next month. We'll send it to our Distribution List by
e-mail and it will be on our Guedry-Labine Family Website
shortly afterwards. If you have ideas or thoughts about
what Les Guidry d'Asteur should be doing (at the 2009 Reunion, a
project we could do, etc.), please e-mail me at guidryrm@cox.net
and let us know.
Let's get together, renew old acquaintances and start looking
forward to our future plans.
The tentative agenda for the meeting is:
* Opening and welcome
* Discussion with Rachelle Dugas about Congres 2009 and
LA's bid for Congres 2014. (Rachelle will attend our
meeting. She is from Nova Scotia and is working for
Congres 2009 as well as coordinating the Louisiana bid package
to secure Congres 2014.)
* Membership Report (Charlene Lacombe)
* Financial Report (Chuck Guidry)
* Dedication of our family plaque at St. Alphonse/Meteghan
(Report - Marty Guidry)
* Guedry-Labine & Petitpas MiniReunion at Acadian Village
in Lafayette, Louisiana on October 13, 2007 (Report - Marty

Bonjour Cousins,
After a couple of difficult starts due to computer technical
problems, Allie Guidry and Rachel Hardee, our editiorial team,
have compiled another outstanding issue of "Generations".
In addition to the excellent Book Nook and Family Recipes, this
issue contains two articles on extraordinary people in our
Guedry-Labine family.
Malvina Menard Labine took the extra step throughout her life to
care for "her" people - be it young children she 'took in' and
raised or the good folks of Alzida, Ontario for whom she was the
reeve. Edwin Joseph Guidry, Sr., living in rural St. John
the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, on the opposite end of the
continent from Malvina, similarly rose from his bootstraps to
own a sugar plantation and become a stalwarth in his community.
As you browse through this issue, note the articles about the
dedication of the plaque in St. Alphonse, Nova Scotia to
Augustin Guedry and Marie Jonson and the recent MiniReunion that
we had in Lafayette, Louisiana.
I hope you enjoy this issue of "Generations".
In August 2009 Congres Mondial again will host the Acadian
National Congress - this time in the area of Caraquet, New
Brunswick. The Guedry-Labine and Petitpas families will
have our Reunion on Sunday, August 16, 2009 near Bathurst, New
Brunswick. We are already making preparations for the
Reunion and are working with our cousin Lorn Guidry of Bathurst
to locate a facility for the Reunion. As you make your
plans to attend the Congres Mondial, please set aside August 16,
2009 to attend the Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion.
During 2008 as plans get firmed up, we'll keep you informed
about the reunion.
If you have any ideas for articles that you'd like to see in
"Generations" or would like to submit an article for the
newsletter, please email Allie Guidry at txguidry2000@yahoo.com
or myself at guidryrm@cox.net .
Thanks and enjoy this issue of "Generations",

ACADIAN VILLAGE IN LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
On Saturday, October 13, 2007 we're having a Guedry-Labine &
Petitpas Family MiniReunion at Acadian Village in Lafayette,
Louisiana. It'll be from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at the old
Stutes Store in Acadian Village - an excellent all-weather
facility. (On entering Acadian Village, go immediately to
your right and continue past the homes until you reach the
Stutes Store.)
There is NO fee to
attend the MiniReuion and your entry into Acadian Village is
free also for this event. So come by for an hour or two or
the entire day and enjoy being with the family.
We'll have
historical and genealogical displays of our family as well as
activities throughout the day. If you research the family,
bring your records to discuss with others. We'll also have
several persons available that may be able to answer your
questions or find that lost ancestor.
And there will be plenty of time to just meet cousins and chat
with them.
Those attending the MiniReunion will be able to tour and enjoy
Acadian Village any time during the day as part of the
MiniReunion. Be sure and visit the barn where you'll see
the display of old Acadian farm implements loaned to Acadian
Village by member John Guidry of Metairie, LA. The kids
will be fascinated to see how the 'old folks' grew the beans,
corn and other crops that we take for granted today. And
don't miss the old-time mowers - a far cry from today's riding
lawn mowers.
Also interesting is the LeBlanc House, the boyhood home of
Dudley LeBlanc (Cousin Dud) - Louisiana State Senator and
inventor of Hadacol. Cousin Dud was also one of the
earliest Louisianians to write about the history and genealogy
of the Acadians with his books "The True Story of the Acadians"
and "The Acadian Miracle". The home contains a superb
collection of Hadacol, Carry-On and other products of the
LeBlanc Company as well as momentos of Senator LeBlanc's life.
An don't miss the Aurelie Bernard House which has a large
painting by Robert Dafford of the Acadians arriving in
Louisiana. These are just a couple of the many
interesting restored Acadian buildings at Acadian Village.
Each is an authentic Acadian building that showcases a unique
cultural aspect of the Acadians as music, spinning and weaving
and being a blacksmith.
Why not bring a special item or two from your family so we can
all enjoy seeing it. Or, if you would like to bring a
display on any aspect of our family, please do so. We'll
have an area to set it up for everyone to view it.
Here's a couple of websites describing Acadian Village:

Looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting new cousins on

our Jeddry/Geddry cousins will dedicate a plaque to Augustin
Guedry, the founder of the Guedry family in the Meteghan/St.
Alphonse area of Nova Scotia. Les Guidry d'Asteur and our St.
Alphonse/Meteghan cousins teamed
up to design and purchase the plaque and boulder on which it is
mounted. The dedication will be at the Catholic Church in St.
Alphonse, Nova Scotia. The dedication is open to the public.
If any of you are in Nova Scotia
during August, please try to attend the dedication and visit
with our cousins. I am planning on attending to represent our
"southern" Guedry family. During our 2004 Reunion in Meteghan we
wanted to "leave something behind" as a remembrance of our
fellowship and reunion. The genesis of the plaque began then and
soon we'll see the culmination of that effort.
Begin looking for the Summer
2007 issue of "Generations" within the next month. We'll send it
to our Distribution List by e-mail and it will be on our
Guedry-Labine Family Website.
If you have an idea or thought
about what Les Guidry d'Asteur should be doing (at the 2009
Reunion, a project we could do, etc.), please e-mail me at
guidryrm@cox.net and let us know.
Let's get together, renew old
acquaintances and start looking forward to our future plans.
The tentative agenda for the
meeting is:
* Opening and welcome
* Membership Report (Charlene
Lacombe)
* Financial Report (Chuck
Guidry)
* Dedication of our family
plaque at St. Alphonse/Meteghan
* Guedry-Labine & Petitpas
MiniReunion at Acadian Village in Lafayette,
Louisiana on October 13, 2007
* A Small French
Language/Culture Lesson (Elaine Clement)
* Initial planning for the
August 2009 Guedry-Labine and Petitpas
Reunion in New Brunswick
(location, activities, etc.)
* Sales Committee Report (Wayne
Simoneaux / Marty Guidry)
* Genealogy Committe Report
(Daryl LaBine / Marty Guidry)
* Newsletter Update (Allie
Guidry / Marty Guidry)
* Website Update (Becky Boggess
/ Marty Guidry)
* Other Business (Guedry-Labine
Family Crest; new Guedry-Labine projects)
* Closing and Lunch
So let's gather together for
some comradeship and discussion on what we can do for our family
during the next two years. We need your ideas. If you can't
attend, please email me and let me know what you'd like to see
Les Guidry d'Asteur do for the family.
Everyone's welcome and
encouraged to attend. It'll be a lot of fun.
Elaine has selected a nice cafe
in Lafayette for all of us to gather for lunch after the
meeting. For those that have never attended one of our meetings,
this is where the real fun begins. The conversation is great,
the laughter abounds and we all have a great time together.
So come and join us for this
meeting.

September 2006
Bonjour Cousins,
GUEDRY FAMILY CREST
Although few, if any, Acadian
families actually have an authentic coat-of-arms, several
Acadian families have designed a family crest.
Several of our members have
inquired if the Guedry family has a coat-of-arms or crest.
Almost certainly we do not have an authentic coat-of-arms and
know of no registered crest for our family. Les Guidry d'Asteur
recently decided to design a family crest and have it available
prior to the 2009 Reunion (see below). We have established some
general guidelines for the Guedry crest to ensure it represents
in a sincere tone our international Guedry family. (Here Guedry
means Guedry, Guidry, Jeddry, Jedry, Gedry, Labine, LaBine,
LaBean and all other variations of the Guedry name.)
A group of four to five people
will design the Guedry crest with input from Les Guidry d'Asteur
members. At this time I am soliciting help from three or four
folks to serve in the design group - the Guedry Crest Committee.
We will coordinate this project using email and the internet so
anyone can serve - regardless of your location. Serving on the
Guedry Crest Committee will not require a lot of your time and
should be a lot of fun while you serve Les Guidry d'Asteur. You
do not have to know anything about family crests to help out.
There is a lot of information on the internet and in local
libraries. We need your help in gathering information and giving
us your ideas. The chairperson of the Guedry Crest Committee
will direct the project.
If you would like to help design
our crest, please email me at guidryrm@cox.net. And don't be shy
about volunteering; we need YOUR ideas.
MEETING
On August 26, 2006 members of
Les Guidry d'Asteur met at the CODOFIL offices in Lafayette, LA.
It had been several months since our last meeting so everyone
enjoyed renewing acquaintenances and discussing our
Guedry-Labine family. It was a fun meeting with Elaine Clement
initiating a discussion on several common Cajun expressions that
were used in south Louisiana years ago. Several folks then
related interesting stories about the lives of their Guedry
ancestors. As a remembrance of our 2004 Reunions in Lunenburg
and Meteghan, Les Guidry d'Asteur helped design and install
plaques about the Guedry family in Merligueche (Lunenburg) and
St. Alphonse, Nova Scotia.
When you visit Nova Scotia, look
for the plaques near the fire station in Lunenburg and the
church at St. Alphonse.
If you haven't gotten your
Guedry-Labine Family Cookbook, we still have a few for sale at
$11.00 each which includes shipping. Just send me a note with
check at the address below my signature and I'll put one in the
mail to you.
We continue to remain solvent
financially with about $1300 in our treasury.
These funds will help us
continue our programs to promote the Guedry-Labine family and to
aid members in researching their family history. Thanks to all
for supporting Les Guidry d'Asteur. Although our paid membership
is down a bit from 2004 when we had our Reunions, we have had
many folks renew their membership in 2006. Thanks for your
support. If you haven't renewed your membership and would like
to do so, please visit this link, print out the membership form
and mail it and your check to Charlene Lacombe at the address
mentioned.

Our outstand ing newsletter
"Generations" continues to improve both in appearance and in the
quality and variety of articles published about our family. The
fall issue of "Generations" will be available soon. In it will
be an intersting article by Bernie Geddry on his continuing
research into Mount Guedry in France and its possible connection
to our family and Sandra Perro's superb discussion of the
Petitpas family. We all have an interesting story about our own
family - be it a major piece or a short article . Please share
it with our members. Send your story to me at guidryrm@cox.net
and we'll publish it in "Generations" for our members. We can
all learn more about our Guedry-Labine family as share our
knowledge of the family.
2009 GUEDRY-LABINE & PETITPAS
REUNION
We are beginning to plan our
2009 Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion.
Although it's three years away
from now, it takes over two years to put together a successful
Reunion. Congres Mondial Acadien will center the 2009 activities
around Caraquet, New Brunswick. Our Reunion likely will be in
the Caraquet area. At this time we are selecting a location and
date for the Reunion. Keep tuned as our plans develop. Anyone
wanting to help with the planning please let me know by email.
2007 MINI-REUNION
In anticipation of the 2009
Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion, we are planning a Mini-Reunion
for our family in 2007. In October of 2005 we had a Mini-Reunion
in Cutoff, Louisiana on Bayou Lafourche. Tentatively, we are
planning our next Mini-Reunion on Saturday, 13 October 2007 at
Acadian Village in Lafayette, LA. Acadian Village is a
reconstructed 1800's Louisiana Acadian Village in which most
homes and structures are actual period Acadian buildings rescued
from destruction. We anticipate that we'll meet from about 10:00
am until 4:00 pm. We're planning a number of activities during
the day - historical, genealogical and cooking. Folks attending
also will have complete access to all the buildings and
facilities at Acadian Village to enjoy during the day. Stay in
touch as our plans develop.
Merci,
Marty
