Bonjour Cousins!

December 8, 2016

Bonjour Cousins,

Our Fall 2016 issue of "Generations" is now available. It has several interesting articles as well as our Book Nook, Historical Tidbits and Bon Appetit. By the way, I have eaten those jelly rolls a number of times at my grandmother's and they are really tasty.

Art Guidry and I had a very interesting year and a half delving into his genealogical tree. At times it was frustrating and we thought we had hit a dead-end, but using a lot of persistence and an interesting technique, we broke through and discovered his entire North American Guidry line. Read about how we "proofed" his genealogical line in this issue.

We are trying something a bit different with this newsletter. Instead of attaching the newsletter to this email, I am sending out a link to the newsletter on our Guidry-Labine Family Website. Just click on the link and it will take you to our Newsletter Page where you can click on "Fall 2016 Newsletter" in the center of the page. An added bonus is you'll be able to read any other of our earlier newsletters that you wish.

http://sites.rootsweb.com/~guedrylabinefamily/newsletters.html

Many of the email servers are not allowing attachments through their systems and others have size limitations to attachments. We hope that this method will let more of our members receive the newsletters directly.

Thanks to Becky Boggess, our webmaster, and Allie Guidry, our newsletter editor, for their outstanding support and help in publishing this newsletter.

We hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Joyeaux Noël et Bonne Année,

Marty

Bonjour Cousins,

Attached is the Summer 2016 edition of "Generations" - our newsletter for our family association Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur.

In it you'll articles on the Acadian Deportations, an interesting DNA study done on the Guédry and Melanson families as well as information on why our ancestors in the Guédry and Petitpas families chose to settle at Merliguèche, Acadie.  Of course, the always interesting Book Nook, Bon Apetit and Historical Tidbits are sure to catch your attention.

Thanks to Allie Guidry for editing another outstanding edition of "Generations".  She does a superb job in taking a drab article and turning it into an eye-appealing, interesting source of information with photos, original documents, interesting layouts and wonderful use of colors.  These are not easy tasks and she spends over a month preparing each issue of "Generations".

We hope you'll enjoy this issue as you escape the summer heat.

October 25, 2015

Hi Folks,

I hope that all of you had a nice time at the Reunion in Henderson on the 10th of October. I appreciate the help of so many people in planning and putting on the Reunion. It was really great to see everyone there. We had approximately 200 of the family attending the Reunion.

Our next major Guédry et Petitpas Reunion will be in August 2019 on Prince Edward Island, Canada. We're hoping that many of you will be able to attend that one. Of course, we are just beginning the planning for that Reunion which will be during the Congrès Mondial Acadien.

During the Grand Revéil Acadien I had the opportunity to talk with the presidents of several Acadian family associations and unfortunately learned that some are disbanding after this year due to a lack of interest. The Board of Directors of the Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur would like to see our family association continue as an active and viable organization.

With that in mind we'd like to get your feedback on the Reunion and also some ideas on what you'd like to see in the future. Here are some of the things that Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur is doing at the present time: (1) publishing three times a year our newsletter "Generations" (2) managing two websites - one as a family website and one as a genealogical website; (3) having Reunions approximately every 3 years; (4) donating books about our family to libraries across North America where there are concentrations of Guédry and Petitpas folks and (5) published a family cookbook.

Please take a couple of minutes to answer these questions. You can either reply to this email or can copy the questions and send an email to me at [email protected] .

(1) Was there anything that you especially liked about the Reunion and would like to see us continue in the future?

(2) How could we improve the Reunion for you? What didn't you like about the Reunion?

(3) Would you like to have a "mini-Reunion" somewhere in South Louisiana in the next 12-18 months? If so, in what area or town would you like this to occur? [Note: A "mini-Reunion" would last 4-6 hours and would have a light lunch, brief entertainment and lots of visiting time.]

(4) Would you like to have a Genealogical Day periodically where we could gather, bring our genealogical materials to share with others and hopefully fill in some missing information? [Note: We likely would hold this event at a local library that would have the genealogical books and other resources we may need during the course of the day.]

(5) Would you like to have our Guédry and Petitpas families participate in a DNA project? Have you done DNA testing on yourself and would be willing to share your results? Would you be willing to do DNA testing on yourself for the project?

(6) What other types of activities or events would you like Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur to host?

(7) Would you want to help in planning and putting on events with Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur?

(8) Would you like to help in another capacity with Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur? If so, do you a specific area that interests you?

Thanks for taking the time to respond. We all appreciate it.

SAVE THE DATE

GUÉDRY ET PETITPAS 2015 REUNION

Saturday, 10 October 2015 (9:00 am until 5:00 pm)
Henry Guidry Memorial Park (130 Park Drive)
Henderson, Louisiana

(For a little something extra, see the Lagniappe section at the end of this note.)

Our upcoming Guédry & Petitpas Reunion will be at the large, covered pavilion at Henry Guidry Memorial Park in Henderson, Louisiana on Saturday, 10 October 2015.

This is in the heart of Guédry country in southwest Louisiana. Of course, the spellings you'll encounter in the area are Guidry, Guedry and Gaidry so be prepared to meet your many cousins. You may even find a local Petitpas cousin or two although they are not as numerous in south Louisiana.

We are ready to welcome all of our Guédry, Guedry, Guidry, Gaidry, Geddry, Gedry, Jeddry, Jedry, Jefrey, Gidry, Guildry, Grivois, Labine, LaBine, LaBine, Petitpas, Pettipas & Pitts cousins to south Louisiana for our 2015 Guédry & Petitpas Reunion. We have reserved the large, covered pavilion and associated buildings at the Park and have a Cajun band scheduled to play some two-steps and waltzes. We also have two superb chef cooking gumbo, jambalaya and all the fixings for lunch. And, best of all, everything is FREE!!!

This Reunion will be a bit different than some of our recent reunions. It will be outdoors along the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp. It will be a more relaxed setting with lots of time to mingle, meet everyone, exchange family history and stories and enjoy the area. We will not have a formal agenda as in the past with only one or two short activities planned. We will have a local Cajun band from our family play a little music during the day and will set aside time to induct some special folks into the Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur Circle of Distinction. We are planning to have local family chefs prepare a series of Cajun dishes for our noon dinner. The Reunion will be free to all.

October is a wonderful time in Louisiana with cooling temperatures, mild weather patterns and has the least rain of any month.

Registering

So that we will have enough chairs and tables and will cook enough food at lunch, if you would like to attend the Reunion, please email Martin Guidry at [email protected]. Just state how many people will be attending in your party and your name.

We welcome everyone to the Reunion - both Guédry and Petitpas descendants and friends of the family.

If you should fail to register, that's okay. Come on down to Henderson, LA and join us.

A Little HIstory

Shortly after the Great Flood of 1927 Henry Guidry and his family left their home at Atchafalaya, Louisiana and resettled near the railroad stop at Lenora, Louisiana. Here he opened a restaurant. Shortly afterwards, he moved his restaurant and family a little closer to the river and founded the settlement later to be called Henderson, Louisiana. At Guidry's Place (the name of his combined restaurant, bar and dance hall), Henry Guidry began serving crawfish dishes and the public loved it. His wonderful chef Gladys Breaux developed and prepared many of the tasty dishes. Henry brought crawfish to the world stage - prior to this they had been eaten by the Acadians in Louisiana, but only at homes. Guidry's Place eventually evolved into Pat's Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant, which is still serving crawfish today. Henry's brother, Edwin 'Mulate' Guidry, was a crawfish marketer, catching the tasty crustaceans in the Atchafalaya Swamp. Mulate later opened the Rendevouz Club near Henderson and then moved his Club to Breaux Bridge. Here he renamed it Mulate's and began a restaurant famous for its crawfish dishes and live Cajun dance music. Today Mulate's Restaurant in Breaux Bridge is known as Pont Breaux's (aka Breaux's Bridge).

So set aside the first half of October to be in south Louisiana for the Grand Réveil Acadien, the Festival Acadiens et Creoles and the Guédry et Petitpas Reunion. We'll all have a great time enjoying our culture and being with our cousins from throughout North America.

A Little Lagniappe

For those that may be in the Lafayette, LA area a couple of days before the Reunion, you may want to catch these two presentations. Both are free and open to the public.

Thursday, 8 October 2015 (1 - 3 pm) at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinsville, LA

Martin Guidry and Greg Wood (of Maryland) will be presenting a two-part presentation on "The Acadians of Maryland". Martin will briefly discuss the history of the Acadians in Acadie, their deportation with specific reference to Maryland, their dispersion within Maryland, the stay and treatment while in Maryland and their departure for Louisiana.

Greg will discuss the fate and lives of the Acadians that remained in Maryland after 1770 and their impact on Maryland from 1770 until today.

Friday, 9 October 2015 (2:15-3:15 pm) at the CajunDome (Blues Room) in Lafayette, LA

Martin Guidry will present "An Exile of Hopes and Heartbreaking Tragedies Through the Eyes of Pierre Guédry (1741-1825)". He will discuss the life of Pierre Guédry, son of Augustin Guédry and Jeanne Hébert, from his birth at Merliguèche, Acadie through his difficult travels from Baie des Espagnols, Lunenburg, Georges Island, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Louisiana.

We hope to see everyone at Henry Guidry Memorial Park on October 10th,

Marty
