THE BUTAUD FAMILY OF SOUTH LA AND SOUTHEAST TX

At least two distinct branches of the Butaud (Butaux, Buteaux, Buteaud, Buteau) family exist in the United States. The larger of the two branches is the Buteau family of the northeastern and western United States. The Butaud family of south Louisiana and southeastern Texas is much smaller and highlighted on this web site.

The first Butaud of the southern family documented in the United States is Alexis Butaud, who landed in America about 1827, married Marie Erma Lange in St. Mary Parish, LA on 1 May 1832, was naturalized an United States citizen in St. Mary Parish, LA on 13 Jul 1838 and died in St. Mary Parish, LA on 10 Dec 1884 at the age of 72.

The original home of the Alexis Butaud family was in St. Mary Parish, LA just north of the present-day village of Dumesnil along U. S. Highway 90. Many of his descendants live today in St. Mary Parish, LA and Iberia Parish, LA. One of his sons Philogene Butaud moved to Prairie Gregg in Vermilion Parish, LA (south of Abbeville, LA near present-day Henry, LA) shortly after 1878. Near the time of World War I several of Philogene Butaud's descendants moved to the Port Arthur-Beaumont area in Jefferson County, TX. World War II increased the Butaud immigration into southeast Texas as jobs in the petroleum industry beckoned. Eventually some of these families relocated to Harris County, Jasper County and other regions of southeast Texas.

The Butaud Surname
Throughout the database all direct descendents of Alexis Butaud and Marie Anne Erma Lange are assigned the surname Butaud - even though their actual surname may be Butaud, Butaux, Butaut, Butau, Buteau, Buteaud,Buteaux or Butot. This is done for two reasons:

1) Over the years since the mid-1800’s the Butaud surname has been modified to many forms as shown above. Furthermore, a single individual may have used more than one form of the surname during his lifetime thus making it difficult to determine the proper form of the surname to use in the database.
2) Using the single surname Butaud throughout the database facilitates locating the direct descendents of Alexis Butaud and Marie Anne Erma Lange in the Surname Index of the database

One can determine the commonly used surname(s) of each individual. On the Family Web Cards and on the Person Sheets the “Primary Surname” (“Sur.”) field identifies the main surname(s) used by each individual. Also, the “Names” section near the end of the Person Sheet contains all names found in the records for each individual.

SO LET’S BEGIN. This database contains two types of web pages - Family Web Cards (that contain basic genealogical information on each family) and Person Sheets (that have detailed genealogical information on each individual in the database as well as notes, data conflicts in the records and name variations for that individual).

To get started, click Surnames on the left above. Next click a surname of interest (e.g., BUTAUD). Finally, click the name of the individual that you want to view (e.g., Alexis Butaud).

A Family Web Card appears which contains three generations of this person’s family: his/her parents are at the top of the page, the subject person and his spouse are in the center and their children are at the bottom of the page. You can move forward and backward through this person’s family tree by clicking the blue (or purple) name of one of his parents or one of his children. (If a name is not blue or purple, then no additional information has been placed in the database on this individual at this time.) [NOTE: Multiple spouses of the husband or wife of the subject couple appear just below the center block. Clicking the appropriate number of a spouse, brings up the Family Web Card for this spouse.]

Clicking the blue (or purple) name of the husband or wife of the subject couple (at the center of the page) brings up the Person Sheet of that individual. Use the Scroll Bar on the right to move up and down the Person Sheet and view all of the data entered into the database on that individual. To view the reference sources for any information on the Person Sheet, double-click the superscript number(s) associated with the specific information for which you would like the reference source(s).
If you see a photo next to a person’s name or a small camera image, clicking on the photo or camera will bring up a page with photographs and documents of that person or family.

That’s all there is to using the Butaud Family of South LA and Southeast TX website.
