Fisher Family of Washington Parish, LA

Descendants of
John A FISHER
of Washington Parish, Louisiana

I was lucky enough to have two Fisher grandfathers. My maternal grandfather, Sandy Iddo Fisher, died the year before I was born but I was brought up hearing about him from my mother, aunts, grandmother and Granddaddy Lewis. He was Sandy's brother who had married my grandmother in December after I was born. The two brothers were very close throughout their lives and their wives were best friends. My Granddad Sandy died in December of 1959 and Uncle Lewis' wife, Mary, died of cancer the following spring. My Grandma Bonnie and Uncle Lewis started corresponding and he would come to where she lived to check and see how she was getting along. by that fall, they realized that they loved each other and married in December. My Uncle Lewis became my Grandaddy Fisher, the only one I would ever know.
When I try to think of a single memory of these special grandparents, it seems impossible. My mind turns to Saturday visits watching and listening to my mom, Aunt Helen and grandmother play canasta while Granddaddy would work in the garden or in the greenhouse on his iris hybrids or just having a quiet Sunday dinner after church, or sitting out under the mimosa trees in the morning while we sipped a soda and would talk about nothing in particular. I have thousands of memories of my beloved grandparents and the wisdom they imparted as well as the fun and laughter I had when I was with them. I truly believe that if there was a saint that walked on this earth, it was my Granddaddy Lewis. Lewis and Sandy's sister, Ida, affectionately known as Auntie (or as I spell it, Ainie) was like another grandmother. She had special things for us to do when we visited her home. To my husband's everlasting distress, she was the one who taught me how to write a check. We would play office. We learned to hem cuptowels on her sewing machine. In the evenings after the dishes were done, we would read the comics to each other. She also had a special storybook that had a story for every day of the year. My sisters and I each had favorites in that book and, by the time I was 8 or 9, I knew the stories by heart. She made each of us feel special.
To me that's the way the Fisher family is in my mind. You are somebody special to them. Now, I am trying to find out more about this wonderful family and the people who made my loved ones who they are. Any new information would be greatly appreciated.

There have been many people who have helped me obtain the Fisher family information. My mother and Aunt Helen were helpful in getting me the names of their uncle's families. Ronald P Fisher has done extensive research on the Fisher family and has been very generous in sharing it with me. Carolyn Henderson, the Washington Parish Genweb site webmaster, went above and beyond the call of duty in getting me Fisher and Magee family information. Bud Ellzey got me going in the right direction. The genealogists on my Washington Parish list have always been helpful. Since the Fishers married into almost every major family in Washington Parish, there have been other researchers in those branches (Corkern, Sibley, Varnado, etc) that have helped me piece the different families together. To all of them, I want to say thank you. I hope this endeavor is worthy of your generosity.
