There are eight different spellings of the Varnado name. It seems that the surname spelling changed from descendant to descendant and place to place. We know from Phillip Mullins, a Varnado researcher, that Leonard Verndeau came from France in the 1730s to the Orangeburg District, South Carolina where he was a hide trader. He was a patriot soldier in the Revolutionary War while two of his sons fought as Loyalists or Tories.
I am still researching this family. Any new information is always welcome.
