DEATH OF GUYSBOROUGH COUNTY MAN IN HALIFAX.
The death occurred Thursday evening at Dr. Mader's Hospital, of Wallace Langille, aged 59 years. Mr. Langille was born at Liscomb, Guysborough County, but had resided at 34 Atlantic St., this city for a number of years. He is survived by his widow and two children. The deceased was in the employ of the C.N.R. for about twenty years and at the time of his death occupied the position of bridge building foreman. He was a member of Acadia Lodge A.F. & A.M., and of the Loyal True Blue Association, of which he was a past district deputy grand master. The C.N.R., loses, by his death a valued and faithful employee and the city a good citizen. Dec. 30th--The Evangelistic Meetings which were held in Roachvale for two weeks, have come to a close. We were very glad to have Mr. Donald Carde and Rev. J.J. Sidey with us during that time and are sorry they could not stay longer. We are glad to report that about twenty persons came forward in the services. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Vernon C. Horton on the birth of a son. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Delaney have returned to New Hampshire after spending a few weeks with Mrs. Delaney's parents. Mr. William Porter has come home from Sunny Brae to spend his Christmas. Rev. J.J. Sidey and Mr. Donald Carde held service in the Methodist Church on Sunday morning, Dec. 17th. They also assisted with the service in the Baptist church in the afternoon. Mr. Delbert Myers, of Queensport, was visiting friends here, recently. A concert was held in the Roachvale school house on Friday evening, Dec. 22nd. There was not a very good attendance owing to the people being sick with colds, but all who were present report a good time. After the program was over, Santa Claus made his appearance and was very much full of life. Miss Clara MacDonald, of Guysborough, spent a few days in Roachvale, recently. Mr. Harry Gosbee has returned from Sunny Brae. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Slater have gone to New Harbour to spend Christmas. Mr. Howard Dort, of Dort's Cove, is spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Spanks. Dec. 30th.--As Christmas is drawing near, I thought I would send a few items to help our paper. A very pretty wedding was held at Mr. Thomas Hendsbee's when his daughter was united in marriage to Mr. James Murphy, of Peasbrook. Mr. Fielding Hendsbee being groomsman and Miss Mildred Hendsbee bridesmaid. The happy couple will reside at Mr. thomas Murphy's, father of the groom. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Greencorn on the birth of a daughter, Mamie Margerite. Mr. Frederick Richardson was helping Mr. Ernest Hendsbee to chop some wood last Friday. Mrs. Barney Hendsbee was visiting Mrs. Ernest Hendsbee Sunday last. Mrs. Alfred Hendsbee was visiting Mrs. Stephen Greencorn, Sunday last. Mr. Ernest Hendsbee paid a visit to Canso Sunday last returning Monday. Mr. ____ard Dobson purchased Mr. Bar___ Hendsbee's house one day last week. Mr. Hughie Greencorn was helping Mr. Ernest Hendsbee set some rabbit snares on Thursday last. Sorry that the sale on Saturday last was a failure. We wish that our Queensport boys would help us some. Mr. Frederick Richardson was visiting Mr. William Richardson Sunday last. (The top of this page is missing, but it looks like news from Country Harbour Mrs. Gordon Hudson, and Miss Ina Hudson took a flying trip to Cross Roads one day last week. Mr. Olie Fenton makes frequent visits up Country Harbor. Glad to report that Mr. Gordon Hudson is well again, after having a sore hand. Mr. Levi Porter spent the evening one night this week, with his son-in-law, Mr. William Hudson. Miss Lois Hudson, accompanied by Mr. Stanley Sutherland spent one evening last week with her mother, Mrs. S.D. Hudson. Glad to know that Mrs. Norman Hudson is well again after a long and serious illness. Mrs. Isaac Fisher is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Harold Hudson, of this place. Miss Nellie Gay has gone to New Glasgow, where she will spend the winter months. |
Dec. 30th.-- Miss Augusta Hart, who has been teaching in Sydney, C.B., is spending Xmas vacation with her parents here. Everyone is taking advantage of the good sleighing these days. Miss Helen Farrell has gone to Boston, Mass. Miss Margaret Tobin, who has been teaching at Mulgrave is spending the holidays with her mother, Mrs. Martha Tobin. We are pleased to learn that Mrs. John Wills, who has ben ill is recovering under the skilful care of Dr. C.E. Aikens. Our school teacher, Miss Worth, had an Xmas tree and concert in our school for the kiddies. They all enjoyed it very much. Mrs. Coleman Ross paid a visit to her sister, Mrs. George Nickerson, on Sunday last. Mr. Ira Hart, of the Post Office Staff, Guysboro spent the week end at his home here. Messrs. Harry Irving and Josie Phalen have arrived home from St. John, where they have been employed for the W.U. Tel. Co. Jan 2nd.--The concert held in the Upper New Harbor School house on Thursday evening, December 21st, proved a grand success. Everything was carried out in apple pie order. Much praise is due our popular and much appreciated teacher, Miss Mary O. Sangster, for training the pupils in grand order. After the programme was finished, Santa Claus came in and gave a great speech. He asked the pupils if they knew what an undertaker was, and every child could answer him. He said once he came to that school and asked a pupil if he knew what an undertaker was, and he said, "a gander". Santa is sure a funny old chap. The chairman was Rev. H.U. Hutchinson. The rest of this article is missing and continues in the next column Miss Mildred Sangster of Drum Head spent sometime in New Harbor recently. Mrs. Raymond Luddington and son, Victor, and daughter, Leona are spending sometime in New Harbor. Miss Elsie M. MacIntosh, teacher New Harbor West school, has returned to her home in Port Shoreham to spend her vacation. She will be greatly missed by the young folks during her absence, but they are glad to know she is coming back again. Wishing the editor and every reader of the paper a happy and prosperous New Year. The death occurred suddenly at Yankee Harbour, Guysborough County, on December 1st, of Joseph a. Peitzsch, a well known resident of that place, in his 73rd year. Deceased was in good health up to the time of his death, which came very suddenly. A large number of friends will regret the passing away of the deceased. He leaves to mourn his loss a large family of eight sone and one daughter, all grown up, besides two brothers and three sisters. He was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon at White Head, beside the remains of his wife, who pre-deceased him fourteen years ago. Rev. Mr. Freisin of the Methodist Church conducted the funeral services. A large number of friends paid their last respects to deceased by attending the funeral. He was prepared to meet the end and never feared death. Editor Canso Breeze. Sir: The sport lovers in and about Guysborough, have heard with a good deal of regret that it is not proposed to hold a horse race at Hazel Hill this winter. This race has become a fixture and has been conducted with great ability by those in charge. The officials have been most capable and courteous and decidedly fair, so that there in no place in the county where owners of fast horses would rather go for a good days sport. It is hoped the officials will not discontinue this event, but will put forth every effort to make it the usual success. There are a number of fast horses at this end of the county. Hull, Shea, Bruce and Pyle have good horses this season. Other, entries would be Peart, John and William Scott, of Melford, and Ernest Peoples, of Mulgrave. We trust the promoters at Canso will see that the race will be held this winter. |
Dec. 30th--The death occurred at Cook's Cove on Friday, Dec. 15th, of Sarah, widow of the late William McDonald. The deceased was 94 years of age and had been in failing health for some time. she leaves to mourn their loss, two daughters, Mrs. William Atkins, of Guysboro, and Mrs. Thomas Robinson, Truro, N.S., two sons, Norman, and George, with whom she resided. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Forbes, pastor of the Methodist Church. Interment took place at Guysboro Cemetery. A lecture entitled "Following the Star" was given by Dr. Sidy in the Methodist Church at Cook's Cove, on Saturday Dec. 16th and was appreciated very much by all present. Mr. Card gave several musical selections, which all enjoyed, immensely. Mr. William Cunningham, of Boylston, accompanied by his mother spent Sunday at the home of Mr. George Myers. Mrs. John Taylor left recently for Antigonish, where she will remain for some time, for medical treatment. There passed away on Sunday, December 17, Levi Myers, one of Cook's Coves highly esteemed citizens. Mr. Myers had been in failing health for several weeks previous to his death. Mr. William H. David was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh C. Munroe, of Cole Harbour, on Christmas Eve. On his way back home he was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. James W. Harnish who came to attend Midnight Mass. Mr. and Mrs. James W. Harnish, of Dover, (the latter formerly Miss Genesta Munroe of Cole Harbor), Masters Gordon Munroe and Allen Dort, both of Cole Harbour, Mrs. Simon Fougere and Mrs. Bernard Cashen, both of Port Felix, were the guests of Wm. H. David on Christmas Eve. Mr. William H. David accompanied by his daughter, Imelda, and Alfred Fougere were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh C. Munroe, of Cole Harbour, on Christmas Day. Mrs. A.M. David and niece, Hilda Roumaine Fougere, were the guests of Mr. William H. David on Christmas Eve. Mr. William H. David and son, Bernard, paid a visit to the Light Station on Christmas Eve. They were accompanied by Daniel Fougere. Mrs. John Marr paid a visit at William H. David's house on Christmas Eve. Mr. Michael Pelrine has returned home for the Christmas Holidays from Annapolis; where he was engaged at work since April last. Mr. Fred Le Blanc has also returned home from Annapolis last week. Miss Cecilia Cashen paid a visit to Mrs. Shannon Munroe, Nurse of White Head, last week. Miss Cashen is suffering from a gathered finger. |
