The Isaac's Harbour/Country Harbour Cookes

Most of the Cooks who lived in the Isaac's Harbour and Country Harbour area were descendants of Wintrop Cook. Wintrop's father, Elias, had moved back to the U.S., where he married, and had a large family. Most, if not all, of his children returned to Guysborough with their parents in 1789. Elias Cook died in 1797.

Wintrop was born in the United States in 1782. It is not known whether he was one of the sons who came to Guysborough in 1789, for he married at Marblehead, Mass., in 1804, although he, too, could have returned to the U.S. for a while. Several of his children were also born in the U.S., and several more in Manchester, N.S. The three youngest were born at Stormont.

Wintrop, and some of his brothers and married sisters, received land grants in the Salmon River Bridge (or Bantry) area, along the road leading from Guysborough to St. Mary's. The grants were applied for in 1808, and received in 1810. Wintrop was a cooper (barrel maker), and several of his sons followed him in this trade. The settlement at Bantry/ Salmon River Bridge did not prosper, and many of the residents moved elsewhere. Stormont, at that time, was considered a booming town, and so the Wintrop Cook family moved there. There is record of eight children born to Wintrop and Lydia Cook:

. . . . Their first child was a son, Edmund, who married Elizabeth Mars of Country Harbour. Edmund and Elizabeth later moved to Isaac's Harbour.
. . . . The second child was a daughter, Rebecca (Becky), who married Jonathan Hayes and moved to Isaac's Harbour.
. . . . The third child was a son, John, who probably died young, as there was another son born later who was also named John.
. . . . Samuel was the next child. He married Elizabeth Haine, and later moved to Fisherman's Harbour.
. . . . The fifth child, and second daughter, was Lydia. She married George Mason, and they also moved over to Fisherman's Harbour.
. . . . The sixth child was a son, John, who married Maria Jane Hallett. John and Maria lived at Country Harbour.
. . . . . . The seventh child was another son, Wintrop. He married Sarah Ann Beiswanger and they lived at Stormont.
. . . . James was the eighth child. He married Charlotte Eve Beiswanger, a sister of Sarah Ann Beiswanger, who married Wintrop Cook, Jr. James and Eve lived at Stormont.
. . . . * Francis Cook was probably another son, and I have considered him to be so, for this genealogy, although I could find no definite proof of his parentage. Francis married Sarah Ann Hallet, and lived at Country Harbour, although in the early 1850's, they lived at Halifax.

The Isaac's Harbour/Country Harbour men were farmers and fishermen. Some of them followed the sea all of their lives, becoming captains of ships sailing the world, until the time of the great sailing ships ended.

A large number of Cook(e) men and their descendants became miners, for the gold mines in Goldboro, Country Harbour, Wine Harbour, Forest Hills, and elsewhere, gave Guysborough County much prosperity in the late 1800's. Gold mining ended in the 1940's, and many of these experienced miners found jobs in other mines all over Canada, including the New Glasgow area, Cape Breton, and Ontario.
