Settlement of St. Mary's River

Began in the year 1800 by Robert Taylor, William Taylor, and David McKeen and their families, the two former were sons of Matthew Taylor and Elizabeth Archibald his wife and were born in Truro. Robert Taylor was married to Mehitable Wilson and had by her four sons and four daughters born in the Township of Onslow, and one daughter born in Saint Mary's. Robert Taylor resided with his family in Saint Mary's till September 1806 when they removed to the United States of America.

William Taylor was married in Truro to Margaret McCurdy by whom he had three daughters and a son born there (See Register of Births) and site dying he in 1803 married Hannah Ryder by whom he has had two sons and one daughter born at Saint Mary's (See Register of Births). William Taylor resided with his family in St. Mary's until August 1808 when he removed to Chezetcooke [Chezzetcook].

David McKeen was born in Connecticut of John McKeen and Martha Kergill his wife who removed to Truro in Nova Scotia with their family in 1762 where David McKeen married Jennet, daughter of Matthew Taylor and Elizabeth his wife and sister to Robert and William Taylor aforesaid. They had born to them in Truro eight sons and three daughters. See Register of Births for those living in Saint Mary's.

John McKeen 2nd was born in Truro the thirtieth day of December 1770 of John McKeen, son of John McKeen before mentioned and Rachel Johnson his wife; he was married in 17[?] to Elizabeth Harris daughter of Dr. John Harris of Truro and had by her one son and three daughters born in Truro and three daughters and one son born in St. Mary's (See Register of Births). He settled in St. Mary's in May 1804.

Timothy McLean is a native of Ireland born in the County of [blank] and parish of [blank]; he came to America in 1766 and settled in St. Mary's with his sons James, John, Daniel and Hugh McLean in December 1804 (See Register of Births).

John Taylor, eldest son of Matthew Taylor and Elizabeth his wife, and brother to Robert and William Taylor, was born in New Hampshire the 2nd day of June 1752 came with his father to Truro in Nova Scotia in 1762 was married in that Town the 10th of October 1782 to Agnes Archibald daughter of Samuel Archibald and Elener Taylor his wife by whom he had three sons and five daughters (See Register of Births); he settled with his family in St. Mary's in June 1805.

Archibald Taylor was born in Truro 28th December 1767 of Matthew Taylor and Elizabeth his wife, was married in Truro in 1795 to Jennet Blair, daughter of William Blair of Onslow, who died at the birth of her first child who also died a few hours after. He settled in St. Mary's in 1803 (See Register of Marriages, also Register of Births).

Edward Bryden was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1776 of Robert Bryden and Jane his wife, came to America with them; he was married in March 1801 to Susannah Archibald daughter of John Archibald of Truro and Margaret Fisher, his wife (See Register of Births); he settled in St. Mary's in 1806.

James Whidden was born in Truro the 11th of July 1780 of Simeon Whidden and Dorothy Blair his wife; he was married by the Rev. Hugh Graham of Stewiacke the 16th day of July 1801 to Jane Fisher, daughter of James Fisher and Margaret McKeen his wife. She was born in Truro the 5th day of May 1781 (See Register of Births). Settled in Saint Mary's in 1806. William Whidden settled in St. Mary's in 1806 (See Register of Births).

John McKeen was born in Connecticut State, of John McKeen and Martha Kergill his wife, who removed to Truro, Nova Scotia in 1762 where he married Rachel Johnson, daughter of Lieutenant John Johnson of Truro and Sarah his wife, by whom he had John McKeen, Samuel McKeen, Adam McKeen, and Rachel McKeen. She dying he married Rachel widow of Samuel Archibald of Truro by whom he had William McKeen born in Truro the 4th day of June 1786.

Samuel McKeen was born in Truro the 17th day of April 1777 was married by John Stewart Esq. to Sarah Logan, daughter of John Logan of Truro, the 16th day of June 1803 by whom he had one son born in Truro (See Register of Births), Settled at St. Mary's in 1806.

Adam McKeen was born in Truro the 17th day of September 1780, was married there on the [blank] of August 1805 by the Reverend John Waddel to Jenny Taylor, daughter of David Taylor and Elenor his wife. Settled in Saint Mary's in 1806 (See Register of Births).

Elizabeth Taylor widow of Matthew Taylor and mother of John, Robert, William & Archibald Taylor, came to St. Mary's in 1804.

James Fisher was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, of William Fisher and Elenor Archibald his wife, came to Nova Scotia in 1761, was married in Truro in 1771 to Margaret McKeen, daughter of John McKeen and Martha Kergill his wife who was born the 4th of October 1749. Settled in St. Mary's in 1805.

William Fisher son of James Fisher and Margaret his wife was born in Truro the 31st of December 1772, was married the 29th of December 1799 by the Rev. John Waddel of Truro to Mary Whidden daughter of Simeon Whidden and Dorothy his wife, who was born the 11th of September 1778 (See Register of Births below). Settled in St. Mary's in 1805.

John McKeen Fisher was born the 16th of May 1778 of James Fisher and Margaret his wife, was married in 1805 to Elizabeth Holman, daughter of John Holman of Musquodoboit, settled in St. Mary's in 1805.

David Fisher was born in Truro of James Fisher and Margaret his wife in May 1783, settled in St. Mary's in 1805.

Angus McDonald was born on the Island Sky[e], North Britain [Scotland], the [blank] day of October 1769 of Ronald McDonald and Jenny his wife; he was married the 17th day, of January, 1793 to Martha Fisher, daughter of James Fisher and Margaret his wife, who was born in Truro the 12th day of January, 1775 (See Register of Births below for their family). Settled in St. Mary's in 1808.

Donald Cameron was born in the parish of Kilmorah in the shire of Inverness, Scotland. Emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1801, was married in 1806 to Anne McDonald of Pictou. Settled in the Township of New Caledonia in April 1810. See Register of Births below.

James Martin was born in Philadelphia the 25th Decr. 1757. Margaret Langill was born at Lunenburgh, Nova Scotia, in 1767. They were married the 8th of June 1786 (See Register of Births below for their family). James Martin and his family settled at St. Mary's River in 1811.

William Kirk and his family of two sons and three daughters settled in St. Mary's in 1810 from Pictou.

Thomas Glencross and his family of two sons & two daughters settled in St. Mary's in 1811, just arrived from Scotland. He resided last in Roslin near Edinburgh.

Alexander Barkley and his family settled in Saint Mary's in 1811 from Pictou.

Robert Barkley settled in Saint Mary's in 1811 from Pictou.

Thomas Johnson settled in St. Mary's in 1811 from Scotland.

Peter Jordain and his family (three sons and three daughters) settled in St. Mary's in 1812 from Chezetcooke [Chezzetcook] (See Register of Births for his family).

Alexander Archibald and his family (four sons and one daughter) settled in St. Mary's in 1812 from Pictou. (See Register of Births for his family).

Alexander McKenzie and his family (three daughters and two sons) settled in St. Mary's in 1812 from Pictou. See Register of Births for his family.

William Taylor and his family returned to Saint Mary's in 1810.

Edward Bryden and his family removed to Pictou from Saint Mary's in 1812 and settled there.

William Bryden was born in Scotland of Robert Bryden and Jane his wife, the [blank] day, of [blank]; married at Shubenacadie the [blank] day of [blank] by the Rev. Mr. Dick to Elizabeth Putnam, daughter of Caleb Putnam of that place. Settled at St. Mary's in 1809. See Register of Births for their family.

John McLean, E. Branch. Born in Scotland in [blank]. Emigrated to Nova Scotia in 18[blank]. Settled at Saint Mary's River in 1811.

Simon Fraser was born at Pictou of Hugh Fraser (Meadows) and Margaret his wife, on the fifteenth day of June 1790, was married the 8th of March 1810 by the Rev. James McGregor to Anne McGillvriay, aged 21 years, born at Strathnavern, Inverness, Scotland, in June 1789. Settled in St. Mary's in 1812.

Neil McQuarry Junr. was born in the Island of Roum, Scotland, of Hector McQuarry in August 1787, came to this Province in 1791, married by the Rev. Jas. McGregor in 1808 to Anne McQuarry who was born in 1793. Settled at St. Mary's in 1813.

James Clarke was born in the Parish of Huntley, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the 9th day of October 1780, emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1810, was married the 4th day of June 1811 to Jane Morrow of the same Parish, aged 21 years, by the Rev. Thomas McCulloch of Pictou.
