Looking for any information on John Gwilliam, who emigrated to America from Wales and was born 23rd April 1813.  The folowing is part of an extract that was sent to me.

John1 Gwilliam (Source: Letter from Excelsior Lodge no. 46 I.O.O.F., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Excelsior Lodge no. 46 I.O.O.F.Philadelphia, Penna., April 24th 1903At a stated meeting of Excelsior Lodge No. 46, I.O.O.F. the following was unanimously adopted.Wheras- Our worthy brother- John Gwilliam- who was initiated in this Lodge August 27, 1847 has just passed his Ninetieth birthday April 23rd, 1903 and entered upon the last decade of a century.Therefore be it Resolved- That we hereby tender to Brother Gwilliam our hearty congratulations upon his having attained such an unusually great age and on his having lived so long and useful a life.Resolved- that we convey to our brother the kindest good wishes of the Lidge and the assurance that he will always be remembered by the brethren wit whom he was associated in the years past.Extract from the Minutes.Attest- Henry Kengott Horace Elveth Beave (sp?) PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, SS.

BE IT REMEMBERED, That on this Twenty third, day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-nine before, the Clerk of the Court of Quarter Sessions for the county of Philadelphia, personally appeared John Gwilliam who being duly Sworn according to law, upon his solemn Oath did declare, depose and say, that he is a native of England now residing in the County of Philadelphia, aged twenty six years, or thereabouts, and that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland of whom he is now a subject.

IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed the Seal of said Court, this twenty third day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine.

"PETITION FOR CITIZENSHIP"

To the Honourable Edward King Esquire (sp?) and his Associates,

Justices of the Court of Quarter Sessions, for the City or County

County of Philadelphia

THE PETITION OF John Gwilliam A native of England...Respectfully Sheweth That he declared on oath before the Clerk of Quarter Sessions on the twenty third day of April A.D. 1839 that it was bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States, and of renouncing forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain of whom he was at that time a Subject.- - That your Petitioner has resided within the United States upwards of five years,Ard one year in the State of Pennsylvania last past, immediately preceding this his application to become a Citizen of the United States. That he has never borne any hereditary title, or been of any of the orders of nobility in his own or any outher Country. He therefore prays, that on making the proof, and taking the oath prescribed by law, he may be admitted a Citizen of the United States of America. And he will ever pray, &c John Gwilliam.

James Eddison, a Citizen of the United States of America, being duly sworn according to law, saith, that he knows and is well acquainted with George Gwilliam the Petitioner; that to his knowledge he has resided in the united States five years, and one year last past in the State of Pennsylvania, immediately preceding his application to be a Citizen; that during the said period he has behaved as a man of good moral Character attached to the principles of our constitution, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same.

I, John Gwilliam do swear, that the contents of my Petition are true; that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and I now renounce and relinquish any title or order of nobility to which I am now, or hereafter may be entitled, and I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland of whom I was a Subject.

"NATURALIZATION PAPERS"

*BE IT REMEMBERED, that at the Court of "Quarter (?)" Sessions for the City and County of Philadelphia, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in the United States of America, on the "Eleventh" day of "October" in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and "forty two", "John Gwilliam", a native of "England" exhibited a petition, praying to be admitted to become a CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, and it appearing to the said Court that he has declared on "oath" before "The Clerk of said Court" on the "twenty third" day of "April" A.D. 1839" that it was bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States, and to renounce for ever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the "Queen of Great Britain & Ireland" of whom he was at the time a Subject; and the said "John Gwilliam" having on his solemn "oath" declared and also made proof thereof agreeably to law, to the satisfaction of the Court, that he had resided one year and upwards within the State of Pennsylvania and within the United States of America, upwards of five years immediately preceding his application; and that during that time he had behaved as a man of good moral character; attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, and having declared on his solemn "oath" before the said Court, that he would support the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, and that he did absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state and sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the "Queen of Great Britain & Ireland" of whom he was before a Subject. And having in all respects complied with the laws in regard to Naturalization, thereupon the Court admitted the said "John Gwilliam" to become a CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, and ordered all the proceedings of aforesaid to be recorded by the Clerk of the said Court, which was done accordingly.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto affixed the Seal of the said Court at Philadelphia, this

"Eleventh" day of "October" in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty "two" and of the SOVEREIGNTY AND INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America, the Sixty-"Seventh".

**The Name of John Gwilliam was placed on the Ellis Island "American Immigrant Wall of Honor" by Mr. & Mrs. Arpad Vasale of WIlton, Connecticut in June 1993. see next item.

Email dated April 9, 1999 1:05 PM from Ellis Island reads:

"For privacy reasons we do not give out full donor information. However, we can check our records and provide you with the donor name and city/state. According to our records, the honoree name, John Gwilliam, was submitted for placement on The American Wall of Honor by Mr. & Mrs. Arpad Vasale of Wilton, Connecticut in June 1993. Thanks for your interest." John Gwilliam from Wales is on Panel 518 along with the name The Edwards Gwilliam Family of Wales.
