Ed Bateman, a Negro, will be hung [hanged] at Mt. Vernon, August 7.

Julius Armstrong, a Frisco freight brakeman, who was killed at Aurora, June 20, by a train, was a nephew of Cav Armstrong of Exeter.

Joe White will leave tomorrow on a visit to his old home in West Virginia. We wish him a pleasant visit and safe return.

A. Long  and wife and W. L. Marbut and wife visited their hosts of relatives and friends near McDowell Sunday.

Marion Webber returned from Hugo, I. T., Sunday morning. He will remain at home.

Mrs. Sarah Jones died Saturday.

Mrs. Wm. Wade died Saturday. 

Jack Atterberry was killed in the mines.  

Mrs. Wm. Day is very sick.  

Local Items: Died Lela Maud, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hawk. Remains were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The case of Bert Erwin vs. Joe Bromleve was tried Monday.

Washington Long of near McDowell, visited his son A. Long and family this week.

Mrs. W. H. Brookshire of Duneweg, died Monday. Her husband is a son of Dr. M. C. Brookshire who formerly resided at Washburn and a brother of Mrs. Johnny Montgomery of Seligman.

Died July 6, 1906, Irma Esther, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bennington of spinal meningitis, age 1 year, 2 mos., and 6 days. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.W. Love, on the 7th at the family residence. The remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery at this place. Their many friends sympathize with them in this loss.

Mrs. Hugh Bassett of Leann, left Wednesday, for Heaver, I. T., to visit her children, residing in that vicinity.

Mrs. Wm. Day who has dropsy is growing worse. She is 65 years old.

Walter Vanzandt [Van Zandt] delivered the first new wheat to the Cassville Mill & Power Co., It tested 60 lbs. and he received 70 cents per bushel. This mill pays as much for wheat as anybody.

Monett Star: Miss Ruth Hawkins has returned to Claremore, I. T., after a week's visit with her father Dr. Hawkins and family.

Monett Star: Mrs. Delia Friel was granted a divorce in the Lawrence County Circuit Court, last week from John D. Friel.

Monett Star: Miss Cricket Elsy has returned to Morris, I. T.

Union Valley News Items: Corda Davenport visited Grandma Seneney the 20th. She is still growing weaker.

Chas. Hadley of Sherman, Texas, visited relatives at Exeter, last and this week.

Oak Ridge News Items: Revs. Elwood and Ephriam Harvey of Quakerville, Kansas, of the Quaker Church, preached the night of the 20th, at the Oak Ridge School House.

August 4, 1906, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

City Marshall Wm. Manes of Richland, was shot and killed by Jas. Prichett, an army deserter, whom he had arrested. The murdered escaped.

N. G. Cox of Seneca, writes us to continue sending the Democrat, and also sends his best wishes for the success of all his old friends in Barry County.

Harley Bowen of Monett, has been arrested on a charge of the seducing Miss Katie Russell. The Star says Miss Russell says the deed was committed on a promise of marriage and later on Bowen married another woman. Constable O'Dawyer made the arrest.

Mrs. Wm. C. Dunbar of Exeter died Monday morning of congestion of the stomach, age 56 years. She had been married 36 years and is said to have been a good citizen. The remains were buried at Exeter.

Hazel Dell News Items: Misses Myrtle and Opal Smith and Delia Boucher were the guests of Aubrey McNabb Saturday and Sunday.

John Beck and S. N. Hankins will operate a saw mill on E. A. Frost's farm, 1 3/4 miles northeast of town. They will be prepared to furnish all kinds of hardwood lumber at reasonable prices.

Crane Chronicles: Henry Douglas of Shawnee, Okla., visited relatives here last week.

Geo. Teel, the mill man, 4 miles down Flat Creek, complains of having more work than he can do. George is a hustler, and we are glad to hear of his success.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: L. C. Draper died July 28th, of heart trouble aged 71 years. He left several sons and daughters to mourn his death.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: John R. Patterson has purchased a residence in Oklahoma addition.

Ed Simpson and wife of Tecumseh, I. T., are visiting relatives and friends in this city and vicinity this week. Mrs. Simpson is the daughter of Jas. Ivey, a former resident of this city. Mr. Simpson is County Clerk of his county. [Research Note: Pottawatomie County]  

Mrs. Polly Stiles of near Seligman, died Sunday, Aug 5, 1906, age 56 years, and the remains were laid to rest Monday. She was the grandmother of Lafayette Scoggins, who is confined in jail for killing his father, Mark Scoggins.

Monett Times: Mrs. J. P. Westbay who is at Battle Creek, Mich., telegraphed Harry H. Westbay of Monett, Tuesday, asking him to come to that place immediately. It is feared that his uncle, Jas. P. Westbay is dangerously ill.

Corinth News Items: Alt Reed's sister of the Territory, is visiting him this week.

Seligman News Items: Madge Legg is teaching school at Sunnyside.

Purdy News Items: Born to Bennett Wormington and wife, Aug 8, a son. 

Union Valley News Items: Isaac and Lot Senseney have gone to Joplin with a load of apples.

Nail, the horse thief confined in jail, is recovering from his wounds. He is a nervy cuss,  and is assured of the penitentiary, as the parties from where the horse was stolen, have come and identified the horse and taken him home. Nail says his home is at Maysville, I. T.

Jas. Swindle an old and highly respected citizen of Shoal Creek township, visited his son, Collector Swindle and family and many old friends here this week.

Rev. C. M. Smith of near Exeter, returned Wednesday from a trip to Texas. He conducted a successful meeting at Bradwell, Texas, and also spent a time with Will Matlock and family at Ennis, Texas. He said Will was doing nicely.

Frank Mermound of Monett, is the prod father of a thoroughbred Democratic son. The youngster arrived Sunday, says the Herald.

Mrs. Kate Deason of Topeka, Kansas, is visiting her father, J. W. Hawk and family and many relatives in this vicinity this week.

G. W. Roller of Seligman, attended Probate court Monday.

Concord News Items: Mrs. Arthur Weatherly of near Cassville is visiting her sister, Mrs. Betsy Ferguson.

Concord News Items: Miss Bertha Woods who was visiting her aunt, Mrs. Robt. Montgomery, returned to her home near Wentworth, Monday.

Deputy Sheriff Hutchens took the Hall boy to the State Reform school at Boonville, Thursday.

Henry Parrish went to Newtonia Monday to join the C and W. engineer group.

Guy Chewning, a son of Robt. Chewning, of Springfield, is charged with stabbing a boy at Springfield, Guy gave bond.

Henry Hoyne shot and killed John Backer two miles east of Aurora, Wednesday night. The trouble is said to have come up over their children quarreling. Hoyne is in jail. He claims self defense.

W. L. Marbut and wife, accompanied by their nieces, Misses Fanny and Janie Hughes of Florence, Ala, went to Madry, Wednesday to visit relatives. The Miss Hughes remained there for several days visit.

Ira Smith was thrown from a horse Wednesday morning, near Mrs. H. C. Hobbs residence breaking his arm near the elbow.

Mrs. A. J. T. Joslin returned to Claremore, I. T. Tuesday morning.

Purdy News Items: Asher Smith moved to Marionville, last week.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: B. F. Shelley of Sallisaw, I. T., who visited his brother I. R. Shelley, has returned home.

Mrs. Nancy James, wife of Doctor James, living 5 miles south of town, died Aug 23rd of paralysis age about 73 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Washburn Prairie, cemetery, Aug 24, at 12 am. She was a good woman and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all her acquaintance.

A. Long has bought Ewing Hawk's residence in Townsend's addition, known as the W. T. Burton residence this week.

Mrs. Sam Smith living southeast of town is sick with typhoid fever. She is very old and it is feared she cannot recover. She is the mother of Mrs. Amos Horner, Sm. and Albert Smith of near town and Sam Smith of near Golden.

John W. Box returned home from Ozark, Ark., Monday, noon, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Furgia, age 84 years. She will make her home with her son John. [Researcher Note: Box family members believe that this Elizabeth was the daughter of Hiram and Anna (Lakey) Long, but they have her birth as May 11, 1826, which would have made her 80 in 1906.  A stone at Nichols Chapel in Ozark, states her birth date as  5/11/1816. This grave stone date is thought to be in error.]

Dick Whittington of Eagle Rock, went to Springfield, Sunday night and returned Thursday.

It is with sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Aleck Pheeny of near Pioneer, this week. She leaves a husband and three sons to morn her death.

Petty thieving is becoming so numerous around town, that it is unsafe to leave residence unlocked day or night. Several homes have been entered in broad daylight things taken. Several residence have been entered after night. A load of buckshot await those parties.

A petty thief entered Chas. Ray's residence Saturday night, during the band concert, and took a quaintly of lard out of the kitchen. They entered the residence by the front door and went that way, while all the electric lights on the first floor were on. The street lights were on, making it very light.

Mano News Items: Miss Kate Easley of Eagle Rock was visiting Miss Ella McAnespy Sunday.

Clinton Marbut has been elected to a position in the public Schools. He is a splendid gentleman and the board made no mistake in its selection.

John Nail the horse thief, plead guilty yesterday morning, and was awarded five years in the pen. He ought to have had 40 years, if it had been possible.

A thief entered John Baker's residence on the night of August 31st and took 6 quarts of fruit, a plate of butter,  and some eggs out of his cellar. Mrs. Baker herd the thief and gave the alarm.

Mrs. Emma Traylor of Kansas City was called to the bedside of her mother, Mrs. B. F. Windes of Washburn, who has been dangerously sick.

Fred Johnson and Quince Sanders were arrested at Exeter, Saturday, night, charged with raising a disturbance. Fred was brought to jail and gave bond later. Quince gave bond.

Mrs. Pearl Chandler and her sister Bessie Ivey returned to Enid, Okla., Saturday night after a pleasant visit with her parents, John Ivey and family.

Miss Cleo Preston daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Preston of the Roaring River mills, returned to Springfield, Tuesday to attend school there.

Arthur Burnett of Seligman, returned from a trip to New Mexico, Tuesday evening.

Wm. Leverlin, having served his time in the county jail for disturbing the peace at Monett, was released Wednesday.

Geo. Long of Galena, Kan., is sick with typhoid fever. He is a son of A. Long of the city Hotel in this city. His mother is attending him.

Geo. Long  and Nick Eubanks of Jenkins, came up Saturday, and took back two wagon loads of cans for the canning factory at that place. The securing of these cans stopped a shut down of their factory.

Mrs. Nora Linebarger died at Exeter, Sept 21st of a brain trouble, age about 30 years, and was buried at that place on the 22nd. She was a member of the Baptist Church and leaves a husband and babe to mourn her death. She was a daughter of Thos. Vassar and wife. 

Married, Sunday, Sept 23, 1906 at the residence of Bon Manley, by Squire Plattensburg, Carl Frost and Miss Mollie May of this City. We hope this combination of Frost and May will result in much happiness and we wish them all the success of this life.

Married, Sept 22, 1906, by Judge Frost at Recorder's Office,  Wm. T. Herd and Miss Effie M. Suttles of Rocky Comfort.

Married, Tuesday, by Rev. A. G. Walker, at his store, Theo, Frazier of this city and Miss Myrtle Addington of Monett. Theo. says its a sure thing this time that he is really married and that the boys had chivarried him again.

Circuit Court Proceedings: Circuit Court convened Thursday morning with Judge Cox at Bolivar, on the bench and all the other officials present.

The case of State vs. James R. Fogg, charged with seduction under promise of marriage, was being heard at the time of going to press. The following jury was impounded: Joe Seitz, William Ledgerwood, E. L. Suttemeyer, Frank Cartright, A. B. Gardner, Jerome Johnson, T. C. Zinn, Wm. Stiles, Jas. Williams, Elmer Shore, J. E. Padgett and Sam Woodruff. [Research Note: Sam Woodruff was the husband of Estella Pease of Washburn.]

Monett Stars: Mrs. S. H. Lauderdale died Sept. 29th, 1906, of heart failure, super introduced by the removal of a tumor. She was born in Atlanta, Ga., and was 57 years old. She was a member of the M. E. Church South and a highly respected lady.

Sherman Stubblefield was arrested at Monett, Sept 29th, charged with taking some things out of Rev. Thomas' residence near Jenkins.

Purdy News: Ed. Ambrose is the father of a new boy, that arrived at his home Oct 15th.

Purdy News: A. A. King was badly hurt last week, while trying to catch a bott fly from under one of his horses, the horse kicked him, making a bad wound under his right eye. His jaw was very sore.

Purdy News Items: Mr. Maxfield was hurt Sunday by being struck by the mail bag, thrown from the fast mail train at the depot.

Purdy News Items: Rev. Swiger has returned from the Indian Ty. [Research Note: Rev. James Swiger was the husband of Penelope Haddock, dt of Charles and Sarah (Collins) Haddock.]

Scholten News: Mrs. Emma Smythe visited her daughter, Mrs. Adah Williams, last Tuesday night. She is well and stout again. [Research Note: "Emma" Minerva Emmeline was a daughter of the Rev. G. B. and Mary (Burris) Hancock. Her daughter Mary Adah Smyth and was married to Charles Allen Williams. They are buried at Mars Hill Cemetery.]

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: Born to Grover Hackwith, and wife, Oct 10, a son.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: While the editor and J. W. Goostree were in Powell, Wednesday, the editor in talking to a prominent citizen of that place learned that M. V. B. Webb who had a store in that place had sold his stock to Wm. Erwin and had scared all the money from his wife he could and them bid them good bye. Nothing has been heard of him and Mrs. Webb declares she knows nothing of him.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: Virgil Kelley and Miss Audie Goostree of this place, were married Sunday. Virgil is a son of A. W. Kelley and Mrs. Kelley is a daughter of J. W. Goostree, proprietor of the roller mill.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: Misses Lula and Minnie Farwell of Cassville, were visiting their sister, Mrs. Angie Bragg, Saturday and Sunday.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: Aunt Tennie Duncan fell in the fire Wednesday and was burned pretty badly.

Purdy News Items: Mrs. Edward Hamilton, age 32 years died at the family residence, 606 West 5th Street, Joplin. Her mother, Mrs. Crank, was present at the bedside when the end came.

Washburn Prairie News Items: James and Henry Weston and Elijah Burnett went to Seligman Monday to erect a monument to S. S. Weston's grave.

Washburn Prairie News Items: Mrs. H. J. Hopkins and son A. J. went to Purdy Sunday to see Andy Cowherd, who is very low with slow fever.

Eagle Rock News: Calvin Skelton is doing some good work on the roads, that is badly needed. [Research Note: John Calvin Skelton was a descendant of Zachariah Haddock.]

Eagle Rock News: A fine boy arrived at the home of Bill Couch's on the 11th. Mother and babe doing well. Bill is improving.

Kingdom News Items: Wm. Mills has moved on the place vacated by Mr. Wells.

Rocky Comfort Telegrams: Fern, little son of A. M. Duncan, while playing, fell and threw his arm out of place and broke his arm near the shoulder.

An attempt was made Monday morning, to rob the McDonald County bank at Pineville. The bank was wrecked by a charge of dynamite. A. V. Manning, cashier of the bank exchanged shot with the two robbers whom he encountered at work in the bank. The robbers escaped without accruing any money.

Pioneer News Items: Little Rubie Harader is very low with membranous croup.

Pioneer News Items: Sol and Cleve Lampkins of Joplin arrived Wednesday, for a visit with home folks.

On Nov 4th, Judge Hisaw of Capps Creek will be 71 years old, and excepting four months of that time, he has been a resident of this county. Who can beat him, for being the oldest resident of Barry County? [Research Note: William Hisaw was born in Carroll Co., TN, and was born Nov 4, 1835. His wife was Nancy Richardson. She died Sept 29th, 1905. The Judge died June 13, 1913. His son Walter William Hisaw was married to Maude Banks, daughter of Rachel Haddock and John Henry Banks. They lived in the New Site area of Barry County.]

Scholten News Items:  Mrs. Carrie Hilton went to Crane last Friday morning.

Sherman Stubblefield made a get-away from the county jail, Saturday night, by somebody bending a bar, getting into jail, throwing the lever, that was not locked and letting him out.

Paul, 7 months old babe of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Yarnall of Liberty township, died Thursday, October 25th of a stomach trouble. Rev. Love conducted funeral services at Concord Church, on the 26th, and the remains were laid to rest there to await a blessed resurrection.

Mrs. J. C. Majors of near Golden, died Oct 24th. She as a member of the Baptist Church and a respected citizen. She had many old friends in this section who will be sorry to learn of her death.

Mrs. Crawford Brattin while washing breakfast dishes at her home in Liberty township, Thursday morning, dropped dead. Heat failure was the cause of her death. She was a daughter of the late Maj. Wm. Lauderdale of that section, and a sister to Samuel Lauderdale of that township. She was a member of the Christian Church and the Rev. B. F. Hinds of the Christian Church conducted the family services at Concord Church, Friday. She left a husband, four sons, three daughters to mourn her death. Here acquaintances say she was a splendid citizen and was respected by everybody.

Married, Sunday, Oct 28th, by Rev. Simons, Clarence Ivey and Miss Belle Ray of Monett. We wish them the greatest success possible in this life.

Ilus M. Lee came down from Kansas City Sunday morning and returned that evening, accompanied by his family.

Mrs. Kittie Ennis, wife of E. H. Ennis, ex-city marshal of Monett died at her home in that city Nov. 1, 1906, age 47 years and 5 months after a lingering illness. She was a member of the M. E. Church South, and a most estimable lady. The funeral occurred Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. Schrivener of the M. E. Church South. Mrs. Ennis was a cousin of Geo. Callaway of this city.

The Coroner's jury is the Beckett murder inquest at Pierce City, returned the following verdict: "Beckett came to this death at the hands of unknown parties" says the Monett Star.

Col. Almus Harrington died of paralysis at Ozark, Sunday, morning. He was a noted attorney.

David Talbert's 3-year-old boy babe of Exeter, died Saturday night, Nov 19th of diphtheria. He was a very birth little fellow, and his death was a sever blow to his parents. Quarantine regulation were enforced.

C. A. Thomas, has purchased the Amerine farm on Rock Creek, and will probably move there.

Born to Albert Chenoweth and wife of Lanagan, Nov 4th a third son. Mrs. Chenoweth was formerly Miss Della Wilson.

Ben Johnson's little daughter Flossie, is sick with pneumonia fever.

Miss Elizabeth Grimes of Smithville, Ind., is visiting her brother, J. M. Grimes and family.

Mrs. Albert Kirk and Miss Bessie Livingston of Monett, visited their parents, here Sunday.

Hub. Johnson, age 88 years of Carterville, visited his niece, Mrs. J. S. Plummer and family this week.

Nora, 3-year-old daughter of Jacob Plott, living 6 miles northeast of town, died Tuesday night of membranous croup. The remains were buried at Sparks cemetery Wednesday, Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. W. Ennis.

Madry News Items: Mr. Ellis homesteaded a piece of land out near Pike's Peak, but soon learned that the climate was too cold for Missouri people and calling back the scenes of childhood on a Missouri farm, pulled his stakes and began driving for Missouri.

Monett News Items: Sam Rittenhouse is reported very sick.

Union Valley News Items: J. R. Davenport and wife visited grandpa Seneney last Sunday.

Travers News Items: Mr. Dorona of Van Buren, Arkansas, moved on Dr. Myers farm.

J. K. Hart died at his home near Osa, Nov 23rd, 1906, of consumption, age 56 years. The remains were laid to rest near Billings. He had been a member of the Christian Church 36 years. He left a wife and four children to mourn his death.

Golden News Items: U. G. Dudman's little child died yesterday with the diphtheria, age two years.

Golden News Items: E. C. Stiles died Sunday night age about 70 years. His death was caused by carbuncle on his neck.

Golden News Items: Born to Wm. Clark and wife, Nov the 12th, a girl. Mother and babe getting along all right, but don't know so well about Will.

Golden News Items: Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Majors on Thursday, a son.

Mrs. C. L. Bare of Westville, Indian Territory, mother of E. M. Bare, of this city is reported as rapidly recovering from her recent illness. Mrs. Bare has been seriously ill for the past few weeks and at home her life was despaired of. A letter to her son this week brings the welcome ness of improvement. Eureka Springs Flash Light [Research Note: E. M. Bare was married to Mary Columbia Skelton, Haddock descendent. He was named Eldon M. Bare.]

December 8, 1906, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

Chart Howerton was badly cut with an ax Tuesday, by the ax flying off of [sic] the handle and striking him in the hip, cutting a place 3 1/2 inches long and 2 1/2 inches deep. We are glad to hear that he is getting along nicely and that the wound is not a serious one.

Wm. Tucker of Golden informed us Wednesday that his brother-in-law, John Lee died in Alabama, I. T., Nov 29. He was a son of the late George Lee and a grandson of the late Judge Jas. Lee. He left a wife, two daughters and eight sons to mourn his death.

Noveta, 1 year and 15 days old daughter of Jas. Miller, died Nov 19th of pneumonia. The remains were laid to rest in the Huff Cemetery, Rev. J. T. Brattin, conducting the funeral services. The bereaved have the sympathy of all their friends and acquaintance.

Miss Edna Pinkston of Verona was married to Mr. C. D. Coffinger of Brush, Colo., Dec 5. Mrs. Colfinger is a daughter of Rev. H. Pinkston, who resided in this city and was pastor of the C. P. Church a few years ago. Her many friends here will wish her a successful and happy life.

Luther Bridges and wife, Mrs. Bussey, and A. K. Hill of Joplin accompanied the remains and attended the funeral of Chas. A. Howard at Mineralspring, Monday.

Sam Bryson of Ash township, was in town Monday, and said that his father aged 90 years, was enjoying good health.

The seven year old son of Dr. George Northcutt of Washburn had an attack of diphtheria this week. Anti-toxin was administered.

Shell Knob News Items: Lee, the 5 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Cares fell Tuesday and broke his right arm. He is doing as well as could be expected.

Mrs. J. A. Jenkins and grand son Clarence of Ethel Macon County, MO, returned to their home Monday, after a pleasant visit of two months with Dr. Pond and family. Dr. accompanied them to Cassville.

Mrs. Bert Wright retuned to her home at Freistatt, Tuesday, after a pleasant visit with relative and friends.

Mrs. Jas. Beavers of the Pasley neighborhood died Dec 21, 1907 of fever. The remains were laid to rest in the Huff Cemetery.

Walter Hisaw and wife of Capps creek township, visited Mrs. Hisaw's parents, J. F. Ruddick and family, northwest of town this week.

J. W. George returned Sunday from Stone County, where he succeeded in binding his man over for shooting another man.
