Claremore, I. T. was visited by a severe fire recently. A block of frame buildings were burned. Loss $50,000.

Samuel Snead of Carroll Co., Arkansas, died recently.

Purdy News: Miss Rhea Logan of Oklahoma City visited with friends here last week.

Mr. And Mrs. Pleas Carlin and children, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mariott and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. George Russell and son of Purdy, visited Mr. Russell's mother in Eagle Rock, Sunday and Monday.  Pierce City Journal. [Research Note: Pleasant Vernon Carlin was married to Charlotte Tennessee Russell, Arthur Thomas Mariott was married to Charlotte's sister Frances Rena Ruth Russell, and George Russell was a brother to these girls and he was married to Myrtle Blankenship. They were among the children of Sydney And Margaret (Rumbaugh) Russell.]

Purdy News: J. P. McClure and Miss Effie Burres very pleasantly entertained a number of friends in the reception room of the Purdy depot, Dec 30, Refreshments ere served.

Born to Wm. Hodges and wife, 1 1/2 miles southwest of town, Dec 31, a son.

Jeff Smith of South McAllister, I. T. formerly of Kings Prairie township was in Cassville recently.

John Adams of Washington, attended his father the late Thos. Adams of near McDowell, during his last illness.

T. F. Wolfenbarger of Viola, made this office a very pleasant visit Thursday.

W. O. Black and wife visited relatives of Washburn Sunday. During the trip Will turned the buggy over, spilling them both out.

Pioneer News: Mrs. Ida Stockstill is visiting at W. D. Stockstill's this week.

New Hope News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Burton, Dec 29th, a girl.

Pioneer News: We were sorry to hear of Mr. Hankins getting his wagon turned over and spilling himself an wife in a mud hole. And we hope he will be more careful next time as the weather is most to [sic] cold to be ducked in a mud hole very often.

Exeter News: Born to Will Williams and wife a daughter, Jan 3rd.

Exeter News: J. E. Prunkard is thought to be improving.

Exeter News: Dan. Leonard has a new boarder at his home.

Exeter News: Mose Brattin of Republic visited home folks last week.

Exeter News: It is reported that Miss Exie Beasley of Peirce [Pierce] City will soon be married to Mr. Downs of that city.

Exeter News: The following officers have been elected for the Berry Association officers: Charles Jones, President, W. H. McClure, Vice President, Jesse Talbert, Treasure, A. J. Reed, Secretary.

Fred Black and family spent Sunday with his sister, Mrs. Lottie McHargue and family of Seligman.

Exeter News: Mrs.  Fletcher Morgan is reported no better.

J. B. Smith of Mayflower, is very sick with throat trouble.

Fred Williamson has purchased Henry Kerrick's blacksmith shop and has taken charge, Carlee Hawk is working in the shop.

John Brandy, age 60 odd years, fell dead in the mill at Travers, Jan 12th. He had been turning a corn shelter, and when he turned the crank, loose, he staggered and fell dead. He had no home, but had been boarding with Isaac Bennett. It is said he died of heart failure.

Eagle Rock News: W. T. Ayres sold a load of wheat Monday, to the Cassville Mill and Power Co.

Eagle Rock News: Born to W. T. Ayres and wife, Dec. 31st, a daughter, it died on the 12th. It has gone to him who gave it.

Eagle Rock News: Mrs. B. Holman and son, Everett Brock, John Chappell and a daughter of Sig Burton of near Mano, are sick with pneumonia.

Pioneer News: F. Forsythe has moved to newly purchased farm on the prairie.

Crane Chronicles: Mrs. Trusa Wilson, wife of Josiah Wilson and a daughter of Elder G. B. Hancock, died last week, leaving a husband and two children. The remains were laid to rest in Mars Hill Cemetery. Elder Hood of Washburn, conducted the funeral services. [Research Note: Trusa Etta Hancock was born December 05, 1874 in Boone Co., AR.]

Purdy News: Solomon King was arrested Sunday morning and lodged in the county jail.

Seligman News: Clara Henbest has brought the Bob Wilson farm, consideration $800.

Purdy News: A. M. and A. P. Gurley are attending the Implement Dealers Association in Kansas City, this week.

Forest Grove News: Miss Corla Hudson visited her sister Mrs. Frank Kellum, Thursday.

On night of Jan 19, Francis Vaughn's barn was burned with about $40. worth of hay and some corn. He resides on the Marion Vaughn farm 3 miles down Flat Creek.

Ben Hailey has recently went [sic] to Washington , has homesteaded 160 acres of land in that state. We wish Ben all the good luck on earth.

Dick Elam of Eagle Rock, went to Ochelata, I. T., Wednesday night, to visit his brother, John Elam, whom he has not seen for many years. [Research Note: Richard Elam was married to Alice Haddock, dt of Boon and Columbia (Russell) Haddock.]

Evan Garver had one leg so badly crushed at Aurora, while attempting to board a moving train, Saturday night, that it had to be amputated. The other one was badly injured. Garver is reported to have stolen a watch and was making a get away and attempted to get on the train to escape as an officer was after him. [rest unreadable]

Seligman News: Cap. Roller says he is awful glad that Dick took the Lotta he did, as he was actually getting uneasy.

Purdy News: Will Teel bought out Antle Bros. confectionery and will report in near future.

Miss Ida Hudson went to her father's, J. B. Hudson of near Bricefield, Monday night, to attend her brother, Ora, who it was feared would have an attack of fever.

Married, Jan 26, 1906, at C. & W. depot, by Rev. J. T. Brattin, Wm. Nelson of near Peirce [sic] City and Mrs. Harriett Barnes of near Cassville, Mrs. Nelson has been staying at the county farm for sometime.

R. E. Bruner who purchased the Roaring River mill property, has transferred it all to the Bruner Reality Co.

Mrs. Robert Montgomery of Liberty twp presented this office with a home grown lemon this week, that weighted 16 1/2 oz. Many persons have looked at it. We hereby [paper torn] thanks.

Thos. Hickey of Ash Twp., was in town Saturday. He said his Uncle Thos. Frost who is making his home with him, and who is 83 years old is in very feeble health and has the grip. He also said his wife had been afflicted with rheumatism.

Miss Dixie Hobbs returned Tuesday noon from a visit with her aunt Mrs. C.C. Martin and family of Kansas City.

Washburn Prairie News: Amos Burnett who has been visiting home folks, for the past week, returned to his work at Neodesha, Kansas, Saturday night.

Mayflower News: Tom Vanzandt [Van Zandt] came in from Neodesha, Kansas, Jan 20th.

Rock Springs News: Uncle Ben Gaskins, 86 years old, is in very feeble health. He is the oldest person in this section and it is to be hoped he will soon be able to travel.

Leann News: Elbert Suttles made a trip to Cassville last week to attend school but was advised to addend the spring.

Pioneer News: Grandfather Privett returned to his home in Fayetteville, Ark., after a short visit with his daughter Mrs. Frank Stewart.

G. W. Bunnett has arranged to put in a stone saw, in order to handle the magnificent deposit of lime stone in this vicinity. This will be a small commencement, but will have a big ending.

J. W. Black and Richard Cole of this county have been on the U. S. grand jury at Joplin this week.

Dick Lucky has rented the Dan Cox residence and as soon as Mr. Cox moves to his farm Mr. Lucky will from Exeter.

J. B. Latham of near Viola bought up a dove of cattle this week from Stotts City parties.

Ben Clark of Golden was in town Wednesday. He reported health very good in that locality.

Frank Hensley and family of Neck City is at his father's, Wm. Hensley, in the city. Frank has a severe case of rheumatism.

J. L. Horse, the former dealer is arranging to build lumber sheds on the lot at the south end of this yard.

From the West Plains Gazette we learn that Judge Jas M. Padgett died very suddenly at his home in Brandsville, Howell County, Jan 17, of apoplexy.  [click here to read]

A. L. Brown went to Vinita Saturday night to attend his sister, Mrs. S. E. Wallen, who was very sick. He returned Monday.

Mrs. W. A. Anderson's condition is not improved.

G. M. Bixey and Tom Vanzandt [Van Zandt] brought in 150 head of cattle last week from Stone County.

Mrs. Lee Brown started to Vinita, I. T., Monday morning to attend her sister-in-law, Mrs. S. E. Wallen. She got as far as Monett and there learning that Mrs. Wallen was improving returned home.

Jenkins News: We have a new blacksmith, a Mr. Carney.

Jenkins News: Miss Maud Williams, contemplates going to Oklahoma, for a few months next week to visit her her sister.

Mrs. Alice Gebhart of Monett attended court here Tuesday.

Col. Cloud of Pierce City had a grip stolen from him at Monett, Wednesday, while en route to the city to attend court. The grip was afterwards found.

Will Munday has moved from Galena, Kan., to Joplin.

Sheriff Goodman of Mt Vernon attend court Thursday. He is a very pleasant gentlemen.

Dr. Meyers has moved his family to the Marbut place he purchased last summer.

Mr. and Mrs. Prior spent Saturday and Sunday with Mr. Boyd and family.

Albert Stocksdale is visiting his brother, Oscar Stocksdale. We hear they have bought a saw mill and grist mill near Monett.

The funeral of the late Felix G. Prater, was held at Republic, on the 2nd. The Baptist Church could not hold the crowd. There were 75 members of the Masonic fraternity in the procession. Many beautiful floral offerings were sent by friends. It was a sad day for Republic when the deceased was so well and favorably known.

Washburn Prairie News: Mr. Burnett returned Sunday from Neodesha, Kan., where he has been at work.

At Crane, Monday, Frank Hood shot and killed Fred Angers. Hood was arrested and taken to Galena and lodged in jail.

Jas. King, a saloon keeper of Carterville, was murdered on the streets of that city, Saturday night.

Wm. Turner is running his saw mill east of town to its full capacity. He has orders for three cars of hardwood lumber.

Travers News: Mr. Berry is moving onto the place where Mr. Oakley lived.

Washburn Prairie News: Mrs. R. J. Hood returned from Verona Thursday where she had been to receive medical aid for rheumatism.

Mrs. Franciska Massman of near Eureka Springs, Ark., died last week. [Click here to read]

John Mercer of near Eagle Rock, has proven his ability as a bronco buster by riding three or four horses that had never been ridden before. The boys say they have a mule for him to ride today, Saturday, that will do some scientific bucking.

Mrs. Lizzie M. Dockery, wife of Mark Dockery of Kansas City, died March 3. Mr. Dockery formerly resided in Pierce city - Journal

Charley Talbert, while duck hunting one day last week, shot and killed a Blue Herron or a Bull Goose, that measured 5 feet from end of the bill to tip of tail.

Mrs. J. Black Brown, wife of the well known postal clerk, running the Monett-Paris, died in Pierce City, Monday evening of peritonitis. Here maiden name was Miss Vera Chapman. Mr. Brown will have the sympathy of his acquaintances.

Sheriff Thomas and Detective Chas. Hutchens, with the blood hounds, departed for Vinita, I. T., Thursday night to capture the Outlaws, that killed Deputy U.s. Marshall, near that place this week.

Herny Kerrick is again owner of the blacksmith shop that he formerly traded to Fred Williamson. [Research Note: See the January of 1906 Cassville Democrat.]

At the age of 88 years, Mrs. J. Deruntz, of near Monett, died on the 3rd inst.

Jos. Jestis of Roaring River township is serving 90 days in jail for assaulting his father.

Miss Maggie Ruddick and brother Osie, living northwest of town, have returned from a visit with their sister Mrs. W. W. Hisaw and family of Capps Creek township.

Otto Turner has returned from a stay of several months in the far west.

Silas McQueen of Shoal Creek township will leave March 20 for Arizona where he will located.

Jas. Roller and Bob Edens of near Washburn were milling here Thursday.

Monday Sheriff Thomas and his Deputy Mert. Meador took J. T. Smith convicted of rape for 14 years; J. W. Taylor for horse stealing 2 years and Frank Kellum for having burglar tools in his possession 2 years to the penitentiary. Sheriff Thomas and deputy retuned home Wednesday.

Chas. A. Thomas has traded land in Pleasant Ridge township for the water mill down Flat Creek about 1 1/2 miles.

Mayflower News: Born to J. A. Vanzandt [Van Zandt] and wife a son.

Purdy News: Scott Archibald and children have moved to Marietta, I. T., where they will reside in the future.

Mrs. Francis Walton of Stones Prairie, died March 14, of paralysis, age 46 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

John Roller, of Rocky Comfort, was in town yesterday. He formerly resided near Seligman, and in Cassville. At one time he was constable of Flat Creek Township.

Married Sunday at Pierce City, Mark Ford of Exeter and Miss Lilly Turner of Pierce City. We wish them all the success and happiness possible.

John Morrow came into our office Thursday morning and said he was enjoying better health than for many years before.

Mayflower News: Aunt Mary Vanzandt [Van Zandt]  is improving slowly.

Mrs. John Mayfield of Erie, McDonald County, died last Saturday of paralysis, age 70 years. She left a husband, two daughters and to sons to mourn her death.

Eb. Wilson who it was reported had shot and killed a fellow named Cox at Aurora last week was badly overdrawned [sic]. Wilson did shoot at Cox but the bullet glanced and did no harm. 

Independence News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Austin, Saturday, March 10, a baby girl.

New Hope News: Mrs. D.  A. Dix is still on the sick list.

Pioneer News: Mr. and Mrs. John Hadley are visiting their daughter, Mrs. R. F. Ferguson, this week and attending the meeting.

Aunt Hala Metcall died, last Wednesday morning, of paralysis; she had been afflicted for 14 years and was 62 years old and had been a member of the Christian Church since she was 15 years. She was buried at New Church, J. R. Parmley preached her funeral. She was a good woman and will be greatly missed in this vicinity.

Cross Hollows News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clark Elliott a fine girl on the 6th.

Shady Grove News: Oscar Utter closed a months term of school, Saturday, at Possum Trot in Lawrence County. He had a general average of 30 for the term. The patrons gave him a splendid dinner.

Victor News: Grandma Kelley who has been staying at the home of her son Dr. C. G. Kelly is paralyzed in her left side and is in critical condition.

Victor News: By a letter from Hack Carver's folks in the territory, we learn Mrs. Lelah Miller, daughter of James Carver, is not expected to live.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCarty, a girl, mother and babe doing well but it being their first born, the father's recovery is doubtful.

Wm. Culberth was convicted at Galena, on the 17th, of murdering Samuel Mariette, and was given 15 years in the penitentiary.

Central News: Geo. Chitwood went to see his best girl, Miss Jane Ash last Sunday evening.

Independence News: We hear that Fred Cole is a candidate for Judge of the Western District on the Republican side. Will wonders never cease?

Mrs. T. F. T. Whitney was called to Leann, Barry County, yesterday by the sudden illness of her grandfather, Wash Zinn, one of the pioneer residents of that section, and who is dangerously sick, resulting from old age, he is between 85 and 90 years old. Aurora Argue

Mr. Zinn is an old time citizen of this county, and his many old friends and acquaintances will be glad to hear of his recovery.

Morris Bayless and wife of Sulpher, I. T., came up Saturday on a visit to his father Jas. Bayless and family near Corsicana. Morris was recently married at that place. He has a position in a bank there.

Robt. Harris left Tuesday for St. Anthony, Idaho, where he will probably locate. He has been here several months and made many friends during his short stay.

Ben Pepper and wife of Pineville came over Tuesday to attend the funeral of his brother, the late Judge Henry C. Pepper.

Alice was a descendant of both Charles and Zachariah Haddock. John Calvin Skelton was married to Mary Bell Meador. He was a Zachariah Haddock descendant.]

Rock Springs News: We made a mistake in our report to the Democrat, Eld. M. Smith of Exeter conducted the funeral services over the remains of Mrs. B. F. McCary, instead of C. M. Smith. It was an oversight.

George Forgey of Seligman, was scampering around in this section, last Sunday having queer actions. Minnie had a smile on her face and thinks the name of George is the prettiest name on earth, and Geo. thinks Minnie is the same.

Mrs. Boyer, a widow lady of Washburn, died last week. 

P. E. Horine furnished a coffin for Miss Lillie Turner of Butterfield who died Monday night of consumption, aged 22. She was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Tuesday.

Mrs. Garrrett of Liberty Township died last March 29th.

A. H. Moore of Osa and Miss Erma Spartan of Seneca were married at Seneca, March 27. They will make their future home at Osa.

Butterfield News: Died at her home at Butterfield, Monday night at 12 o'clock, Miss Lillie Turner, age 20 years. Her friends and relatives regret her death, very much, after many days of suffering from consumption, Miss Lillie departed from this world, leaving father, mother, two brothers and two sisters, and a host of friends to mourn her loss. The bereaved ones have our sympathy. 

Born to William Chandler and wife of Enid, Oklahoma, April 2nd, a 9 lb girl.

George Perkins living north of town, died on the 12th, of typhoid fever. He left a wife and one child to mourn his death. Interment was made in Sparks Cemetery on the 13th.

Mrs. Etta Galloway of Jenkins visited her brothers A. L. and Frank Galloway and her sister, Mrs. Henry Thomas of this city last week.

 

J. H. Carl of Siloam Springs, Ark., age 80 years is visiting his grandson, J. Mance Carl and his grand daughter Mrs. L. A. Dunbar and families of this city. In 1841, Mr. Carl resided near Keetsville, now Washburn and moved from there to Benton Co., Ark. 

 

The following cases in St. Louis Court of Appeals from Barry County have been disposed of as following: J. U. Vermillion vs. Mrs. L. C. Parsons; reverted and remained. Samuel Beatty vs. H. E. Saxe affirmed for failure.

 

Walter Bartley and wife of Lake Charles, LA, have been visiting his mother and sister I. B. Preston at the Roaring River Mills. He is a U. S. letter carrier in that city.

 

Drayman Smith was cutting his dray too short Tuesday morning, turned it over breaking some parts of the dray, throwing Mr. Smith but bruising him up some. The team ran a short distance doing no damage.

 

Mrs. Elizabeth Rowe of Elkwood, Ala., died Mar 13, 1906, age 91 years, 11 months and 6 days and was a member of the M. E. Church South. She was the oldest sister of Mrs. W. L. Marbut of this city and A. A. Hughes of Madry. She left 6 children to mourn her death. Mr. and Mrs. Marbut paid her a visit at her Alabama home about two years ago.

Purdy News: Mrs. Long, mother of Hiram Long, died last week, age 76 years. [Research Note: Lavina (Bellah) Long, died May 30, 1906, she was the wife of John Dake Long and was buried at Maddy Cemetery. Her stone reads that she was born in August 29, 1827, which would have made her 79 years old and not 76.]

Hazel Dell? News: Miss Effie Stalcup of Rocky Comfort, attended church at Calvary Sunday.

Hazel Dell? News: Rev. Bert Smith united in marriage Sunday at his home, Mr. Ed Davis, and Miss Cora Lowe of Butterfield. We extend congratulations.

John R. Patterson has disposed of his interest in the Citizens Bank of Rocky Comfort wand will probably move to some other place. W. G. Howard will take his place as cashier, June 15th. After the first of the year, E. E. Coffee will be permanent cashier.

Washburn News: Mrs. Pearl Graham was buried Saturday. She was the daughter of Traver McGlothin.

Butterfield News: James London has sold his place near Butterfield.

Clark News: William Black is home again from near Monett.

Eagle Rock News: We hear some talk of having a meeting in August at Munsey for the purpose of having the cemetery cleaned off, this is a good thing for it is needed very badly.

Monett Times: L. N. Swartzel and family had a reunion Tuesday. All the family were present, and a very pleasant time was had.

Capt. Powell of Butterfield was in town Saturday. During the Civil War he was stationed at this place and belonged to the 1st Arkansas Cavalry.

The Harvey house at Monett caught fire Tuesday at 1 p.m. The loss on the building is estimated to be $500. and to furniture, carpets, etc $1500, making a total loss of $2000. The Star says the origin of the fire is unknown.

Dick McHarge and family of Seligman, have been visiting his mother in North Missouri, who has been very sick.

Daniel Perkins and Sherman Stubblefield, his brother-in-law of near Roark, had a shooting affray Monday, when Stubblefield got sprinkled with some shot, not injuring him to any extent. Stubblefield was sent from this county, sometime ago to the Nevada insane asylum, but ran away. He had made threats against Perkins and went to his, Perkin's home, taking a shot gun which resulted in the trouble named above. 6-23-1906, Cassville Democrat

Obituary of Mrs. Pearl Graham, died June 8, 1906, nee McGlothin, age 26. She was a daughter of J. Taylor McGlothin.

The Hood brothers were acquitted in Stone County, on a charge of murdering a man named Asgus at Crane.
