Extracts from Barry County, MO, Newspapers

An interlibrary loan of microfilm from the State of Missouri Historical Society was the source of the below given.

Some of the items given below were abstracted and so are not complete in form because the 1896 papers are not easy to read and some are in very bad shape. Even the paper date was unclear on some of the issues.

A few of the Pioneers

The portraits of old settlers presented herewith is an interesting collection and we regret that lack of space forbids the lengthy biography of each that was originally intended, but which will appear in future issues of THE REPUBLICAN.

Pictured in penciled drawings, in this paper are Mrs. M. Calton, Thos Van Zandt, Eli Dunlap, P. J. Stephens, H. Dougherty, Wm Stephens, Louis Wooldridge and W. T. Burton.

Mrs. Columbia C. Pharis is the oldest resident of Cassville counting years of residence. She is a daughter of Littleberry Mason, deceased, who moved from Madison Co., Ark., where Mrs. Pharis was born, in 1834 or the early part of 1835.

William T. Burton is the oldest native born resident being born to Mr. and Mrs. John O. Burton, April 1835.

Judge Elias Horine of Washburn is the oldest native Missourian in the county, if not in the state. He was born in Washington County in 1816, while Missouri was yet a territory.

Mrs. Mary Calton is the oldest person in Pleasant Ridge township. She settled on the same place where she now lives in 1840. Her husband built the first mill on Little Flat Creek.

Thos. Van Zandt of Pasley neighborhood and Wm. Stephens of near Washburn, helped to start the Cherokee Indians from their homes in the Carolinas for their present home in the Indian Territory.

Uncle Jack Stephens an octogenarian of north of Exeter was in the Confederate services under Lieut. Wm T. Burton.

Louis Wooldridge is the oldest resident of Mineral Township, 86 years of age. He lives on the north branch of Rock House Creek.

D. P. Pharis is the oldest living merchant of Cassville. He came here in 1844. The above three with Jacob Hawk are the only ones who were here before Cassville was laid out. Wm C. Hawk came soon after, their northwest corner of North and west interest.

Henry Dougherty of Washburn Prairie and Eli Dunlap of southeast of town are amongst the oldest in their neighborhoods.

[Research Note: This could be the same James A. Cole who was a son of Mary Margaret Simpson and her husband Richard Thomas Cole. Richard was killed in Barry Co., MO on Feb 25, 1875. Family lore states that Richard Cole was shot at George Reed's house.

Gary Ball added: "I think this may have happened at George and Sarah Reed's place. I didn't hear any names, but I remember a story Dad told one time. A deputy Sheriff came there to arrest someone for supposedly stealing some corn. The deputy claimed the guy picked up a rock and tried to knock him in the head with it, so he shot him. The way I took it from the way he told the story, that was just an excuse to shoot him. Any way, they carried him into the house and laid him on the bed. Of course he had his hand over the wound and he placed his hand on the wall above the bed leaving a bloody hand print there. After he died and they started cleaning up, the stain was permanent. No amount of washing and scrubbing would remove it. They even took a broadaxe and tried removing a layer of wood from the log, but that stain remained as long as the house stood. I don't know if this is the same incident or not. But I think it is possible. Gary" Darla Marbut said - Gary Ball's Grandfather was Silas Ball brother to my Great Grandfather, Finas Ball. They were son's of William Valentine Ball who married Sarah Elizabeth Garrett. After William's death she married George Reed in the story.]

Stabbing Affray

Monday night about 11 o'clock, at Mrs. Watson's residence in West Monett, Jack Slankard and Bob Hord got into trouble. A fight ensured during which Hord was stabbed in the left side under the arm and near the left collar bone. He was also cut slightly on the left arm. The cut in the side entered the cavity, and is regarded by Dr. Hawkins, the attending physician, as quite serious. After the affray Slankard skipped out and at last accounts had not been found. Both men have families and are said to be tough citizens. Monett Leader.

Obituary: Dunnavant - died, Friday, Dec 11, 1896, at 6:00 O'clock p.m., Lydia Jaenette Dunnavant, age 33 years, 2 months, 1 day.

For nearly fifteen years Nettie, as the deceased was familiarly called by old and young, had been a resident of  Mineral Spring and Cassville, except a short time spent at Eureka Springs, Ark. During that time her persistent efforts, even in the face of ill health, and her daily exemplification, of a true Christian character, won won for her the esteem friendship and deep respect of all who knew her. For nearly six years she was an employee of THE REPUBLICAN office and for cheerful willingness added much to the lives of her associates.
