He was away from home until noon when he returned to find his home filled with happy friends and the tables groaning under their weight of good things, such as only farmers' wives and daughters know how to prepare. After he and his friends had partaken, of the dinner of which there was enough left to feed a small army, they retired to chat and listen to music, both vocal and instrumental, until the sun and clock warned them it was time to depart for their respective home, which they did, wishing him many more birthdays as happy as the one just passed. A careful estimate showed that at least sixty-four persons were present, which shows the esteem and respect in which he is held by his neighbors. Mr. Keith was born in Monroe County, Ind. For nearly twenty years Professor Maiden had been a prominent figure in educational matters and politics in Barry County. In 1881 he came here to take charge of the Cassville School as principal, which position he retained continuously until defeat in the spring election of 1887. As an education he obtained wide reputation and was recognized as one of the foremost in the southwest. In 1888 he was elected county school commissioner and filed the office for eight years, being instrumental in creating great interest in the normal and teacher's institutes. In 1898 he was elected principal of the Exeter School, which position he occupied at the time of the accident. Noah Lewis Maiden was a native of Abington, Virginia, where he was born Oct 10, 1844 to John and Susan Maiden. In the spring of 1863 he enlisted in Co. B. 48th VA Inf., Confederate service. In the Battle of the Wilderness he was wounded in the left arm by a shell, necessitating the amputation of the arm below the elbow. In 1866 he graduated from Emory and Henry College, Virginia, and July 1, 1866, married Emma, daughter of Edgar Leckie, who survives him. In 1869 he moved to Springfield, Missouri, and taught four years each at Union Hall, Walnut Grove and Ebenezer. In 1872 he was nominated for school commissioner of Greene County, and in 1876, was appointed commissioner to fill a vacancy. In 1881 he was granted a state certificate for life. Politically, Professor Maiden was a Democrat, and belonged to the Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of Cassville Lodge No. 238, I.O.O.F., under whose auspices the services were held at the Baptist Church, Sunday, after which interment occurred in the Cassville Cemetery. Rev. J. M. Hively of Exeter conducted the religious services. Members of the order and many friends from Purdy, Exeter, Washburn, and other places were present. Besides his wife, Professor Maiden left six children as follows: Mrs. S. O. Ware of St. Louis, who is present, Mrs. W. A. Wear, Paul, who is in the west, Mrs. C. W. Claycomb of Thorniegh, MO, William and Flora.

He came to Barry County in the early fifties and since that time had been a resident of the county and one of our best known citizens.  Mr. Stevens [Spelled both Stephens and Stevens in same article.] during the War of the Rebellion, served in the Confederate Army, William T. Burton being a Lieutenant. He was engaged in the Newtonia battle afterwards fought under Gen. Shelby at Oak Hill and later was in the fights at Booneville, Cape Girardeau, Batesville, Pea Ridge, and Helena, serving three years. The deceased is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters, Sheriff Stephens being a son. The funeral was held at Exeter, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. For many years he was the land agent for the Frisco Line. When the town of Purdy was started it was named in honor of Capt. Purdy, as are cognition of his services to the county. The deceased was at one time prominent in Barry County politics and in early days was a candidate for congress in this district, before the Republican convention. In 1863 the decease was commissioned a lieutenant in Company E, First Arkansas Calvary and served continuously during the war. A short time afterward he was appointed county school commissioner of Barry County. In 1866 hew as elected to the legislature from Lawrence County. In 1894 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He leaves a wife and three children to morn his loss. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at Pierce City.

Arrested: A United States Marshal went to Aix, Saturday, in company with Cassville officers, and arrest Postmaster Bowman, of that place on the charge of opening al letter. From the best information obtainable it seems that Mr. Bowman has been in a factional fight with some of the Aix patrons and there were threats made that he would be reported to the department. A letter address to Lee Robertson, mail carrier, from the department, was opened by Mr. Bowman. It contained a check for salary. Mr. Bowman erased the name on the envelope and re-addressed it to himself, afterwards delivering the letter to Robinson. Robertson sent the envelope to Washington and the matter was traced down. Mr. Bowman does not deny the charge. Mr. Bowman came to Barry County some months ago from Oregon. He has been highly spoken of as a citizen and his friends believe him to have been under unnatural excitement when he committed the act. He was taken to Springfield, Saturday night, and Monday was bound over to await the action of the Federal Grand Jury. [The name was spelled both Robertson and Robinson in the same item.]
