Corinth News: Will Martin and Miss Stella Helfley were married Sunday. [Licenses notice was listed as Morton, but image he was Martin.]

Clark News: Orastus Bowman and wife have been down in Newton County visiting relatives.

Purdy News: Manford Gentry's little babe, of Near Butterfield, died last week.

Purdy News: The Hamilton girls of Galena, Kan., three granddaughters of Mrs. Jasper Clark, are spending the summer with their grandmother.

Monett Times: Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Rumbaugh of Melrose, N. M., are visiting relatives and friends near town.

Purdy News: Geo. Northcutt of Columbia and Mrs. Nancy Miller of Austin, Tex., are visiting their brother, T. J. Northcutt on Oliver's Prairie.

Drowned in a Cistern: A 2 year old child of Dayton McNabb residing west of Exeter, fell in a cistern and drowned, Tuesday. Rev. T. T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Exeter Baptist Church Wednesday, after which the remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery at that place. The bereaved family will have the sympathy of all their acquaintances. [Reads T. T. Brattin, but may be J. T. Brattin.]

Mrs. and Mrs. Geo. Earle of near town, went to Eagle Rock Sunday, to attend the funeral of their grandchild, the babe of R. Whittington.

Misses Zoe and Letha Henbest of Fayetteville, Ark., attended the funeral of their grandmother, Mrs. Octave Henbest on June 26. 

While a Mr. Surrett had a 6 year old son, living northwest of McDowell, where haling a load of wood, Thursday, the team runaway, threw the boy off and the load of wood fell on him, killing him.

Married June 8, 1908, at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. J. A. Atkerson of Liberal, Kansas, Mr. Almah Guinn of Kansas City and Miss Bessie Ivey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ivey of Tecumseh, OK. Mr. Ivey and family reside near Cassville, and their relatives and friends extend best wishes for the future happiness of the newly married couple.

An Old Citizen Dies: Hamilton Gary of Washburn Prairie died July 3rd, 1908, age 72 years. The remains were conveyed to Purdy, July 4th and laid to rest beside his first wife in the cemetery there. He left a second wife, three sons, and two daughters to mourn his death. The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian Church and good man and citizen. At one time he resided on Stone's Prairie.

Arrested Charged with Rape: Nate Smith of Mountain township was arrested July 3, by Sheriff O'Dwyer, on a charge of attempting to rape Virgie Windom, age 13 years. Squire Shepherd issued the warrant. Smith gave bond and the preliminary was set for July 15th. It was said the charges of rape will not be substantiated, but that another charge will be made.

Pierce Gurley's Funeral: The funeral services held at Purdy, Wednesday, in the memory of the late Pierce Gurley, by Revs Hicks and McCracken were very impressive. The service was conducted on the lawn at the home of the deceased, where the largest crowd that ever assembled in Purdy, to pay tribute of respect, by the memory of a fellow citizen. Rev. Hicks' funeral sermon was very able, his description of the perfect man was fine, that all had faults but the good acts of the deceased outweighed his faults and he and great credit on the right side of the book of life. After the services, at the home, the A. F. & A. M., with Knight Templars of Monett, as escort, accompanied the remains to the cemetery, where they were laid to rest to await the beautiful resurrection mourn. There was about 100 members of the Masonic Lodge and about 40 Knight Templars in the possession. There was a good crowd from Monett and Cassville. The surrounding county were well represented.

Hailey News: Mr. Grove Johnson will teach our school this year.

Dr. W. C. Guild, a dentist of Marionville, has been making and passing counterfeit money and was arrested at Neosho last week, and a lot of the spurious money was found on his person. Benton Robbins took $25. to the First National Bank, Thursday morning to deposit $20. an wanted $5. in change, when Cashier Charlesworth, informed him that one of the $5 was a counterfeit. Mr. Robbins took the bill back to the party who passed it on him. It is believed this is some of Dr. Guild's manufacture.

A Dastardly Crime: Two drunken wretches, "Windy" Wright and Fred Rollins of Berryville, Ark, broke into a Mrs. Wade's residence at the place, July 4, and attempted to rape two Fannin girls; the older girl escaped with her clothing torn off, while Wright held the younger girl and Rollins raped her. They had to be chased away and went up in town, exhibiting pieces of the young ladies' clothing. They were arrested and lodged in jail. This is one of the most brutal outrages, we have heard of, and these characters are not soundly dealt with, such offenses will become common. The punishment in Arkansas, for such offenses, may be hanging, and from reports it should be.

Purdy News: Charlie Wormington's little boy, while riding a load of wood, fell off and broke an arm. 

Purdy News: Mrs. C. B. Nelson died July 2nd. She left two sons to mourn her death.

Purdy News: Mrs. A. R. Dean of Wills Point, Texas is visiting her father, A. B. Stroud.

Fairview Globes: R. Seamester went to Cassville last Friday, where he had his certificate renewed preparatory to teaching school this fall.

Monett Times: John Kennedy's youngest child suffered a serious accident this week. The little one was sitting at the window watching for his father's return, its little hand resting on the window sill. The window fell mashing the child's hand and braking the bones. It was feared for awhile that he hand would have be amputated.

Ash News: Nearly every body says they are going to take in the reunion at Cassville.

Born to Jas. O. Lauderdale and wife of near town, July 13, a bouncing boy. Now, Jim will get his big crop of hay care for.

Born to Wm. Varner and wife, south of town, July 17, a son, Grandpa Pete will smile.

Rev. J. W. Alderson, an old time Christian preacher of this county, aged 88 years, of Monett, was in Cassville last week. We were glad to see him looking so well, and hope he may continue to enjoy good health.

Eagle Rock News: Cap Bradford is our candidate for county surveyor. Cap is all o.k.

Eagle Rock News: Wm. Russell of Ponca, Okla., is visiting relatives here this week.

Purdy News: Mrs. J. T. Browning and daughter of Melrose, N. M., is visiting her parents, Geo. W. Gurley and wife.

Lone Elm News: Minor Burros and family have returned from a two years stay in Washington.

Mayflower News: Died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Daisy Sears, July 26. She leaves a husband, mother, brother and sister to mourn her death. She was laid to rest in the Roller Cemetery.

Clark News: Sunday, Aug 2, occurred the marriage of James Rhea and Miss Lela Henderson of Purdy. James is a son of H. Rhea, a well-to-do farmer near Clark. James is a prominent school teacher at Swindle College this year. Miss Lela is one of Purdy's accomplished young ladies, and is a daughter of Pleasant Henderson.

Monett Times: Mrs. Gus Othenin's mother who is 102 years of age is quite ill. Her heath is usually very good.

Scholten News: Aunt Mary Seltz died July 31st. She had been sick a long time.

Fairview Globe: Mrs. Ida Gahn of near Muncey Chapel died of consumption last week. the family has the sympathy of all their friends and neighbors. [Ghan]

Lodged in Jail: Officer Wm. Dennis of Monett, brought J. P. Smith down on July 31, and lodged him in jail for $50. worth and costs for carrying a pair of knurls. Harry Williams, a boy of 15 or 16 years of age, was fined 50 planks? for carrying a piece of artillery and will have sufficient time to reflect on his wickedness.

Crane Chronicles: A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Hilton of McDowell, first week. The friends of the family here are pleased to hear the good news.

Rev. E. W. Love conducted the funeral services of the late Stephen Burnett, at New Salem Cemetery, Wednesday. A good crowd was present to pay the last respect to a good citizen.

Purdy News: J. W. Alderson of Monett, was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Riddle.

Monett Times: Born to Wm. Burrows and wife, Aug 6, a son.

Monett Times: Mrs. Hathaway died last week, age 103 years old. She was the mother of Mrs. A. Othenin.

Monett Times: Mrs. J. T. Wilkerson visited her sister, Mrs. C. C. Fawver of Seligman.

A Splendid Woman Dies: We learn with much regret the death of Mrs. Polly Kelley at her home in Newton County, aged 87 years, Saturday morning, August 8, 1908. She was the widow of the late Judge James Kelley, a prominent and well-known citizen of that section. She was the mother of 14 children, who were: Wm., dec'd; Amos N., dec'd.; James M.; Rowan; John; LaFayette; George; Sheridan; Boon and Allison Kelley; and Mesdames James Holmes; George Duncan; Sarah Bailey, dec'd.; and Robert Kimbrough. She had been a noble wife and excellent mother, and a loving grand-mother. She had indeed been a mother to many of her grand-children, whom she had raised. A good citizen has gone, leaving many noble examples of splendid womanhood, that endeared her to a large number of people. She was a devoted member o the Christian Church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery. Her character was a beautiful one, and administering comfort and consolation to the needy. Such a life as hers should be inspiration for imitation. Her life was given to others. God bless her memory.

A Double Wedding: A double wedding occurred, Wednesday afternoon, Aug 11, 1908, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Y. Setzer, 2 miles southwest of Cassville. Mr. Lindsey Morton of Marionville to Miss Myrtle Setzer of Cassville and Mr. Jesse Wilhelm of Exeter and Miss Rosa Horrall of Cassville were untied in the hold bands of wedlock by Rev. P. Sanplair of Exeter. A number of relatives and friends were present to witness the marriage of these splendid young people. We extend our best wishes to them for their future happiness and success in this life.

Mrs. Dora Ham wife of Jas. Ham of Verona, died Saturday, Aug 8th, of a stomach trouble, age 52 years. Mrs. Ham was born in Cassville, and was a daughter of the late Hon. Joe Grammer, and left a husband and five children and two brothers to mourn her death. She was a member of the Christian Church.

Perry Evans of Elsey, Stone County, has been sick with the typhoid fever. We are glad to hear that he is recovering.

Col. Worthington the republican nominee for Governor in Arkansas, was stationed in Cassville, during the Civil War.

Prof. Resor of the Marionville College spoke at the re-union, Wednesday evening and was listened to with marked attention.

Killed: Word has been received at Monett, says the Daily Times, by Mrs. Elsie Robinson of that place, that her father, John D. Freil, was killed July 27th by a Santa Fe Train at Moline, Okla. Mr. Freil was a former resident of Roaring River Township and Monett, and was an old man.

Geo. Vanzandt of Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been having a re-union this week, with his sisters Mrs. C. W. Edens, and Mrs. Ed. Dunn, and his brothers Walter and Tom Vanzandt and Gen. Brixey and many old time friends. He has done well and we are glad of it. He left this county 24 years ago. [Research Note: These Van Zandt people named are the children of Thomas J. Van Zandt and his first wife Mary Catherine Cornett and his second wife Celica Jane Walker. ]

Lone Elm News: A fine democratic boy arrived at Benton Lamb's on the 9th.

Ash News: The infant babe of Herbie Swarts died Aug 1, 1908, and was buried at Washburn Prairie Cemetery.

El Paso News: Charley Birks and family have moved to Rigeley.

Edward Phillips and wife of McDonald, Tenn., cousins of Dr. Jos. W. and Sam P. Mitchell and a brother J. P. Mitchell of Ringgold, GA, paid them a visit last week. J. P. returned home Tuesday, but Mr. and Mrs. Phillips remained for a longer visit.

J. W. Turner left Wednesday to visit Tower Hill, Ill, his old home.

Robert A. Thomas and Miss Maud Wormington of Fairview, were married last week.

Go the mill at Wheaton, MO, and take along your plow points and have them ground. They wear better than new points and you can get 37 lbs of good flour for one bushel of wheat. Run by Albert Johnson.

Arch Hessee has had erected at the grave of his wife in Oak Hill Cemetery at this place, a very excellent granite monument.

Wm Ayers and Dick Elam of Eagle Rock, and G. M. Brixey of Cassville, returned from Kansas City, Monday morning where they had shipped 4 cars of cattle.

Gordon Stamps of Siloam Springs, and Jos. Stamps of Van Buren, Ark., where here on the 21st, accompanied by their cousins, Pole and Jess Packwood of Liberty township. Before the Civil War they resided just west of Corsicana. They noted a great change in Cassville, and Barry County, for the better. We were glad to meet them, after having been away for 44 years.

Wm. Murry of Pleasant Hope, Polk County, visited his nephew, Geo. Reams and family and the re-union last week.

A Good Citizen Passes Away: After a short illness, the sprit of Daniel Beck bid adieu to this world and to an affectionate wife and loving children and friends and went to God who gave it, at his home 4 miles, out on the Golden road, Saturday, morning of paralysis and cramp colic, aged about 70 years. The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at the Horner Church by Rev. Henson, after which the remains were laid to rest the cemetery at that place. A good man has departed who enjoyed there respect, esteem, and confidence of all his neighbors. To the bereaved family we extend our sympathy.

We were made sad this week, by the death of Elias Roller in Louisiana, from an accident. It seems he was out driving, when the cab or bubby was turned over, inflicting injuries, from which he died. His remains were shipped to Seligman and buried Tuesday. He was a son of Geo. W. Roller, a prominent citizen of near Seligman, and was about 35 years old. He was a member of the Masonic Order. His many friends will be sorry to learn of his death.

J. B. Miller of Aurora, died Tuesday of typhoid fever, aged 60 years. He was a member of the old dry goods firm composed of M. T. Davis and J. B. Miller, and was one of the founders of the Bank of Aurora. A son and daughter survive him. He was a good man.

J. P. Court: Squire Plattenburg ground out a number of grist in his court last week. Those not heretofore mentioned are:

Luther Walker for disturbing the peace of an assembly, was fined $1.00 on a plea of guilty.

 C. E. Fenwick for assault and battery, dug up $1.00 and cost on a plea of guilty.

Wm M. Clark for petit larceny, gave up $1.00 and cost on a plea of guilty.

C. C. Carney started out Monday selling Watkins Product preparations. Mr. Carney was raised in Barry County and is reliable and honest.

Wm. Marbut and his wife of near McDowell, were in town Thursday and contracted for several tomb stones for relatives with Adams & Co.

Mrs. Jos. Matthis of McDowell is very sick with typhoid fever. We hope to hear of her early recovery.

Born to George Brand and wife, south of town , Sept 3, a son.

Born to Oliver Farwell and wife, southeast of town, Sept 1, a son.

Miles Abernathy will return to Texas in a short time. On his return, he will visit in Oklahoma.

Penn. Moore and son Leo of Neutral, Kan., visited his father-in-law A. Long and family this week. He returned home Wednesday.

Claud Frost has been appointed postmaster at Cowan, N. M., a new post office. The office was named in honor of our old friend, Geo. Cowan, formerly of Capps creek township.

Miss Samantha Brown and Mrs. Tellie Warren, sister and niece of L. G. Brown, left Thursday evening for their homes at Newborn, Tenn.

Chas. Sills and daughter left Thursday evening for Salem, KY, to assist an aunt in winding up her husband's estate, who died recently.

Eagle Rock News: Henry Cooper and family of Maysville, Ark., are visiting his relatives and friends.

Mount Grove News: Mr. and Mrs. Yarbrough are the proud parents of a baby boy.

Mrs. C. C. Beaver of Seligman had a second stroke of paralysis, Aug 25th and her condition is serious. She is the mother of Chas. Beaver of this city. Mrs. Beaver spent several days there this week and returned home Wednesday evening.

Dock Skelton of Eagle Rock made the Democrat a social visit Tuesday. Mr. Skelton is among the oldest and most highly respected citizens of our county.

Scholten News: One of Tom Burk's twin babies got a bean in its throat and had to call a doctor and have the bean cut out.

Scholten News: Emma Smyth spent a few days at Alba Williams last week.

Purdy News: Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Daugherty of Pasley are visiting their uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Andy Clevenger this week.

We are sorry to announce the death of Mrs. James Willhite of near McDowell of a stomach trouble, Sept 10, 1908, age about 66 years. She as the sister of Mrs. Wm. Haynes of Pleasant Ridge township, Mrs. Chas. Hocker of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Will Cecil of Shawnee, Okla. She left two daughters, residing in Texas and Oklahoma. She was a splendid lady, and loved by all her acquaintances. The remains were buried in Spring River Cemetery near Verona.

Eagle Rock News: Calvin Skelton is clerking in R. W. Whittington's store this week.

Hailey News: Mrs. Will Potter and children vested her father E. M. McKinney last week.

Hailey News: Sm. Cares visited his brother D. A. Cares Sunday.

Shady Grove News: Lige Long got back from visiting his mother in Wright County. He is going to move over there this fall.

Mt. Grove News: The Mt. Grove school had their pictures taken Monday.

Rock Springs News: J. A. and Jake Roller are attending the Baptist Association near Monett this week. They attended the Sunday School convention at Monett.

Rock Springs News: Mrs. M. C. Elegeg and son John of Vinson, Okla., has been visiting here and near Seligman for two weeks. She is a daughter of John Arnhart that used to live at Washburn.

Killed at Southwest City: Jack Abercrombie was mysteriously shot and killed at Southwest City last week. He with a companion were driving out of town in a wagon, when the killing occurred. The killing created considerable excitement. No arrest had been made.

Mrs. John Hadlow of near Eagle Rock, died last week. The remains were laid to rest in the Horner Cemetery. She left a husband and five children to mourn her death.

The happiest daddy in all this section, was Walter M. Charlesworth, Cashier of the First National Bank, Tuesday morning, when he was telling everybody about a little daughter, that arrived at his home on that date. Mother and babe are doing nicely.

Will Earle Died: William M. Earle died Sunday in Carthage, and was buried Monday at Carterville, of consumption, aged 30 years. He was a son of Geo. Earle residing 3 miles northwest of town, and a grandson of Mrs. House of the same neighborhood. Many years ago, he united with the Baptist Church. He left a wife and one child to mourn his death. George Earl and wife attended the funeral. At one time he was a member of the A. O. U. W., and carried $1000 insurance on his life. To his wife and child, father, brothers, and sisters, and other relatives, we tender our sincere sympathy.

Scholten News: Mr. and Mrs. Am Wiley attended the funeral of Uncle Finley Forbus at Osa Thursday.

Scholten News: Mrs. Emma Smythe went to Crane Friday to consult an eye doctor. [Smyth]

Liberty News: Dr. Owens and wife of Joplin visited last week with Rev. S. F. Laney and family.

Travers News: The Quaker school is progressing nicely with management of Prof. Homer Marbut.

Rock Springs: Molasses making and fodder saying is the order of the day. Corn is very late in some sections.
