An interlibrary loan of microfilm from the State of Missouri Historical Society was the source of the below given data.

The papers of 1897 were so very difficult to read and in such bad shape that a lot of them were abstracted from what could be read, therefore some entries for this year may be incomplete in form.

Scholten News: Brought to Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smyth, May 6, one fine girl . [Research Note: Joseph William and Minerva Emmaline (Hancock) Smyth's daughter, Agnes Gertrude Smyth was born May 6, 1897. She was a granddaughter of Rev. Golman Buford and Mary Minerva (Burris) Hancock. Agnes married Rufus Hansford Green, July 2, 1916  at Granby, Barry Co., MO.]

Mrs. G. W. Nordyke, of Mineral Spring, was called to Purdy last week by the serious illness of her mother, Mrs. Dempsy Newby, retuned home Tuesday, the latter having improved.

Miss Ida Downing, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. B. J. Norby, returned home to Monett, Monday evening.

M. C. Messer and L. Beasley of Cassville, and W. G. Haynes and Amos Gurley of Purdy attended Ringling Bros. Circus at St. Louis Friday.

Mark Plummer of the Kingdom has invented a fence machine, which he contemplates patenting.

Mrs. Martha Bray of Springfield, widow of the late Nathan Bray, was married Sunday to Joseph Glatts of Clinton, Iowa. Mrs. Glatts is well known to many of our older citizens. Mr. Bray formerly owning considerable real estate in this county.

Married, at the residence of L. Atkinson, Cassville, Thursday, May 18, at 10:30, a. m. T. C. Burk and Miss Ida Williams of Crane Creek township, W. D. Manley, Esq., officiating. The bride and groom were accompanied by J. W. Williams and Miss Nannie Burk, A. M. Williams and Miss Pearl Hancock, C. B. Wilkins and Miss Talla Williams, all of Creek Creek. [Research Note: Sallie Pearl Hancock, dt of the Rev. G. B. and Mary Minerva (Burris) Hancock, married A. M. Williams.]

Mrs. Cora Stivers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Scott, died about 1 o'clock Tuesday morning , of confinement. She had been ill about three week and lived in Mt Vernon. [Research Note: Confinement was an old-fashioned way they listing child birthing or difficulties from the birthing process.]

Forest Grove News: J. D. Cook of Lawrence County has been shaking hands with old acquaintances.

Washburn News: S. D. Withers is farming in the vicinity of Cassville this year.

Washburn News: Pat Mooney is able to get out by wearing his sisters dress. [Research Note: In one of the earlier items it was learned that he was burned badly at camp fire while camping in Oklahoma. His sister was Jennie Mooney who married Wesley Denbo in 1896.]

Kings Prairie News: J. W. Eagle has gone to Sarcoxie to go into business.

Washburn Prairie News: Mamie Ellis and Goldie Arnold of Washburn are assisting H. J. Hood in berry picking.

The stone building recently vacated by W. T. Denbo has been re-covered, painted and plastered, which adds much to the looks of Main Street. [Research Note: Wesley Talbert Denbo was married to Jennie Mooney, Feb 16, 1896 and first Ida Edens who died in 1895.]

Washburn News: Little Minnie Pease has had another relapse, but is again recovering. [Research Note: Minnie was the daughter of James Alvin and Janetta (Fetrow) Pease.]

Kings Prairie: J. A. McKinney is the champion berry picker of Pleasant Ridge.

Hailey News: Messes John and Ed McKinney marketed hogs Monday.

Geo. M. Goodnight and family C. D. Manley and family and Miss Cora Hudson attended Decoration services Sunday at the Goodnight and Bethel Cemeteries.

The Talbort farm adjoining town was sold Monday under foreclosure against W. P. Jones, for $3500.; Mrs. H. C. Hobbs beneficiary, being the purchaser.

Mrs. Eliza Rine was born May 25, 1835 in Marion Co. O. At the age of four years her parents moved to Davis Co., MO, where she resided the greater part of her life. She was first married to John Henry Gardner, living with him until his death, which was in 1892. In the year 1865 she was married to John Rine, her present husband. The greater part of her life she she has lived a devoted Christian. John Gardner was a soldier in Co. E. ? Mo. Inf. enlisted August 1861. Mrs. Rhine served as a soldier in Co. C. ? Mo. Cav., enlisted Jan 4, 1863, discharged July 20, 1865.

Mrs. Rhine's 62nd birthday, May 25, was appropriately observed by the following program: Scripture lesson and prayer, by Mr. Champ. Greeting Miss Anna Kerr; Song, Little feet be careful, Edna and Mary Baker; Speech - Not in Vain: Miss Anna Kerr; Dinner; The afternoon was devoted to the old soldiers service; Song - Shiloh's Hill; Survivors of Civil War, Miss Ann Kerr; John Burns, and Clota don't make the man, T. P. Hunt; Abraham Lincoln, Miss Anna Kerr; Young folks, thanksgiving, Mr. Hunt.

Grandma Heisel was the oldest person there, being 87 years of age. It was a complete surprise to Mrs. Rine. There were eighty persons present, fifty grown folks and thirty young people, most of which were grandchildren. An enjoyable time was had by every person and will be a day never to be forgotten. To make the surprise more complete, John Rine, her son, married Miss Rosa Kelley, and brought her home Tuesday morning. We return our thanks for samples of delicious cake sent. Ed

Forest Grove News: June 4th was the birthday of Mrs. J. W. Sharp. Her two sisters visited her and a pleasant time was had.

Forest Grove News: Married June 6? at the residence of Mrs. Beshears, Robert R. Henson and Miss Dela Passley, Rev J. W. Ennis officiating. Mary prosperity crown their efforts and flowers that never fade bloom along their pathway. As they grow older may their affections for each other grow stronger.

Exeter News: Elmer Roup is now head miller at the Exeter Mills, vice W. A. Brashears, resigned.

Exeter News: The firm of Burnette & Burnette and C. L. Roseberry have consolidated and now occupy the Burnette stand.

Scholten News: Robert McQueen and daughter of Verona were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Williams, Saturday, and Sunday.

 

 

June 24, 1897, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO

Died - June 9, Herdon S., youngest son of Mrs. M. C. Harper, born March 28, 1874, died at his home near Pioneer. Burial was in Corsicana Cemetery.

Mrs. Lewis Smith, who had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. R. A. Johnson, returned Friday to her home near Purdy.

Married, Sunday, June 39, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Thomas, one mile northwest of Cassville, William S. Peters of Butterfield and Miss Ann Thomas, Squire J. T. Pennell, officiating.

Miss Cora Holiday of Mineral Springs who has been visiting in Kansas for some from this past, returned home last week.

Ash News Items: Eld. W. R. Easley ran a narrow risk the other day of being killed. He was riding an ugly horse, which threw him off, he narrowly escaping hitting a large tree.

New Site News: Lee, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carlin, is dangerously ill with whooping cough.

Mineral Springs:  Mrs. C. E. Bludorn has her new house enclosed and is occupying it. It is a neat structure.

Washburn Prairie News: Grandpa Lane is said to be at the point of death.

Washburn Prairie: Billy Hancock and lady of Washburn were visiting at H. J. Hood's Sunday. [Research Note: William Calvin Hancock was the son of Rev. Golman Buford and Mary Minerva (Burris) Hancock. He married Sinia Alice Gates.]

Washburn Prairie News: Misses Ella, Ollie, and Ora Hood will spend the Fourth at Park, MO, visiting in the family of Ed Cole.

Washburn News: Uncle Harve Westmoreland is back from his visit to his old home in North Carolina. He had a splendid trip. On his return home he came through Alabama and visited his daughter there.

Little Flat News Items: Creed Hamilton went to Aurora Saturday with a load of peaches.

Corsicana News: Charles King says it doesn't pay to cut wheat on Sunday as he broke his binder not less than a dozen times.

Miss Mattie Sterarns, accompanied by her niece and nephew, Forest and Earle Ellis, all of Springdale, Ark, are visiting the family of L. Beasley.

Died, July 1st, Miss Ivy Prior, of consumption. Burial was in Sparks Cemetery.

Born to I. M. and M. A. Roller, June 24, a 10 pound dishwasher. Mother and babe doing well. Luck and long life to all.

Leann News Items: Miss Iva Hunt and Mrs. L. N. Pannell went to Exeter Sunday, the former to attend the Normal, the later to visit her parents. 

Stony Point: Mrs. Moffatt of Washburn returned home last week after four weeks visit with her daughter, Mrs. Emma Howard.

New Site News Items: Died June 30th, Lee, infant son of Mr. And Mrs. C. A. Carlin. He had been suffering for some time with whooping cough. The bereaved parents have the sympathies of a host of friends. [Robert Lee Carlin was a son of Charles Asa and Minerva E. (Hayes) Carlin, and was buried at New Site Cemetery.]

Mr. Saxe and family are packing their household goods today and will move to Monett tomorrow. The citizens of this city will be sorry to learn of this estimable family leaving Pierce City and hope their stay may not be for long. Pierce City Empire.

Mineral Spring News: Mrs. Rosie Gibson is visiting her father, A. Sparlin and sister, Mrs. Annie Bludorn.

Leann News: C. P. Albright woke the neighborhood Saturday morning early by exploding several sticks of dynamite to honor our forefathers who declared our independence.

Horner News: W. J. Farwell and children, Lulle, Minnie, attended the celebration at Eagle Rock, Saturday, returning Sunday.

Horner News: Albert Smith and family and Miss Pollie Hall, Mrs. Smith's sister, went to White River Saturday to visit the family of the formers' brother, W. M. Smith, whose little child died Friday. They returned Sunday.

Miss Ivy Prior died July 1 of consumption and her remains were interred in the Sparks Cemetery the following day after services by Mrs. Colson.

Since July 1, the following homestead entries have been made before Circuit Clerk Jones: Wm. R. Gaines NE 1/4, NW? Sec. 2-21-28; Lewis R. Wilmer, S 1/2, SW 1/4, 30-22-28; Isaac T. Tinker, SW 1/4, 82-22-26; Abe Lemaster, E ?, Lots 1 and 2 NW 1/4 and W? NE 1/4 22-21-25. [Research Note: some of these numbers may be incorrect, copy was not too clear.]

Sunday evening, while visiting at Frank Thompson's for his family, I. T., Meador's team became frightened at a barrel in the rear end of the wagon, broke the lines and began to run down the hill, towards town. After running some distance one of the horses fell and was stripped of its harness, the wagon passing over it, bruising it considerably. No one was in the wagon, and no damage was done tearing up the harness. 

Mrs. C. C. Gee and children enjoyed the Fourth by visiting her daughter, Mrs. Murphy, at Eureka Springs.

Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Denbo went to Washburn Monday to attend the funeral of the latter's brother, Pat Mooney. [Research Note: Patrick Mooney died July 12, 1897, son of John and Bitty Mooney. The funeral must have been the same day as the death. Mentioned here is Wesley Talbert Denbo and he was born 1860 and died 1930. He married second, Jennie Mooney, Feb 16, 1896. According to the cemetery marker, his wife, Ida Edens, born 1872 died in 1895 [of consumption]. They are buried at Washburn Prairie Cemetery.] 

Died Monday at Washburn, 16 year old Pat Mooney, son of John Mooney. Believed to have been injured jumping from a train. A sister is Mrs. W. T. Denbo. [Research Note: Patrick Mooney was the son of  John or Shawn was the brother of T. P. Mooney. Wesley T. Denbo was living in Joplin in 1920 and 1930 but had no wife. He married Jennie Mooney Feb 16, 1896 in Barry County, MO. Jennie was living in Miami, OK in 1900 and stated that she came to the US in 1884. ] 

Died Atrell Corine, 9 month old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W. S. Foster of Purdy. Burial was at Sarcoxie.

Washburn News: Eld. Hancock will preach at the Old Town hall Saturday night before the 4th Sunday in this month. [Research Note: This is Rev. Golman Buford Hancock.]

Ash News: John Perkins little boy, who was cut so badly by a mower, and had his leg amputated, is getting along finely and will bet well it is thought.

Aix News: L. B. Preston has been doing considerable improving on his mill.

Ash News: David Poe has gone to Garfield to get work. Crops are laid by and all kinds of harvesting is over. All who can leave home are going to other parts to hunt work. Several parties are talking of going to western Texas, as they learn from letters from those who have gone there that wages are $1.50 and $2.00 a day.

Leann News:  Calloway Black and his son Aaron were here Saturday looking for a farm to rent for the latter.

Horner News: Jas. Ellred's baby has been seriously ill and is not likely to recover.

McDowell News: Mrs. Judge Hutchens has been on the sick list.

McDowell News: W. Q. Davenport has sold his flouring and saw mill to Mr. Fullerton, Davenport got a farm and has moved three miles west of Stotts City, Lawrence County.

Frank Arnold of Washburn arrested a fellow by the name of Rainey of McDonald County, Wednesday, charged with stealing a plow.

Married Tuesday, July 20, at the M. E. parsonage, Monroe Lovine and Miss Caldonia Browning of Kings Prairie, Rev. A. M. Ball officiating.

W. H. Goodnight of Stones Prairie and Lee J. Cloud of Monett were in the city Saturday to secure a license for the latter and Miss Addie, daughter of Mr. Goodnight.

Thos. W. Reed of Mineral Spring made final proof Monday on his homestead: C. L Sparlin and Robert Box acting as witnesses.
