November 6, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

Simon Bumgartner of near Pierce City, had two large grey horses, a spring wagon and harness stolen early Friday morning, for which a reward of $50 is offered. Wm. Smerdon and a Mr. Colbert of near Pierce City, spent Saturday night in this city, hunting the stolen horses. They feel confident from a description given by Mrs. Thomas Laidlaw of near McDowell that the thief passed her residence sometime Saturday afternoon, coming up Flat Creek and was again described by some movers whom he met coming up the creek and after passing; turned back and passed them again, then they lost his track. They went southeast Sunday morning.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lemon Hilton of near Scholten, Oct 25, 1909, a son. Lemon was in town Wednesday and was rejoicing over the youngster's arrival. He said the acreage of wheat sown this year was larger than last.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen King, southwest of town, a daughter Oct 28.

Vede Murphy of Golden and Geo. Reed of Eagle Rock were in town Tuesday.

David Dingler and family returned from Springfield, Wednesday where they attended the funeral of Geo. Ervin. While there he exchanged his Ford Automobile for a six passenger Maxwell car, that they came home in.

Travers News: Mr. White our miller and family returned from Grenola, Kan., where they were called to the bedside of their daughter who died.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Rozer Graves of Exeter, a daughter, Oct 31. 

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith was buried in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery Tuesday.

G. M. Brixey bought 24 head of mules at Green Forest, Ark., last week and shipped them home.

Purdy News: Mrs. J. Lough is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ray Reasor of Bartlesville, Okla., this week.

Sheriff Newman received a telegram Monday, Nov 8, from Sheriff Holton of Columbus, Kan., informing him that he had arrested Ray Cowherd and said that a requisition would be necessary, to bring Cowherd to Barry County for trial who is charged with rape and wife abandonment. As soon as requisition papers are secured, Sheriff Newman or deputy, will go and bring Cowherd to this county for trial.

Jacob L. Padget Dead: Through the courtesy of A. L. Brown, we learn from the Ashland, Oregon, Tidings, that Jacob L. Padget died at that place Oct 29, 1909, age 70 years, leaving a wife and two sons, Finley and Sam, to mourn his death. Mr. Padgett first located in Keno, Oregon, where he was engaged in the mercantile business, but retired from business and removed to Ashland, Oregon, where he lived until death.

Away back in the 80's he came to Barry County and located 2 miles south of Cassville and later on he and the late J. M. Bayless, the late Wm. Earle and J. W. LeCompte, organized the firm of John M. Bayless & Co., and engaged in the general mercantile business and from the start, this firm did a large business.

In 1887, the Barry County Bank was organized and he was one of the stockholders. In about 1891 he sold his interests in Cassville and moved to Oregon, where he resided until death. He was the principal mover in the building of the M. E. Church at this place and very materially assisted in giving the church new life. He was a genial disposition and had a good word for everybody. His family has our sympathy.

Mrs. Padgett will make her home with her son at Keno, Oregon.

Ash No. 2 News: Born to Frank Smith and wife, a son. Mother and babe doing nicely. Frank is all smiles.

Ash No. 2 News: Uncle Henry Surrett has gone to Joplin to visit his son.

Exeter News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ellston, the 1st, a girl.

Exeter News: Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Coats, the 2nd, a boy.

Exeter News: Mrs. Alice Ervin returned from Oklahoma City Tuesday, where she had been visiting her son, Wm. Ervin for several weeks. 

Ruby, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Horine got her right arm badly scalded, by falling near a stove boiler and her right arm going into the boiling water up to her elbow. She is improving nicely.

Dennis Witt died at Joplin Wednesday of pneumonia, and was buried Friday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, west of Butterfield. He left a wife to mourn his death. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Witt and was raised north of this city. He was a splendid young man and had many friends here who will regret to learn of his death. 

Mrs. Wm. Suttles of near Jenkins died of dropsy, Tuesday, Nov 9, aged about 42 years, leaving a husband and children to mourn her death. She was a member of the  M. E. Church and a sister of C. C. Carney of Cassville, T. W., and F. P. Carney of Marionville and a niece of Mrs. N. L. Hailey of this city. C. C. Carney and wife, Mrs. N. L. Hailey and daughter Mrs. O. H. Thiele attended the funeral Wednesday. She was a splendid wife, mother and citizen.

Wallace Cook of Newton County, died Saturday, Nov 6, 1909, aged about 66 years, and was buried Sunday in the Berwick Cemetery, amid a very large crowd of friends and neighbors. The deceased was the oldest and only brother of our fellow citizen Jas. T. Cook who lives 4 miles out on the Hailey road; he attended the funeral of his brother.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hawk, Nov 6, a son. It is a question as to what its politics will be. Art will have him sworn in as a deputy marshal.

Mrs. Sarah Powell of Liberty township, Sunday, Nov 7, 1909, it being her birthday, was made happy by relatives and friends visiting her and spreading a splendid dinner. The day will long be remembered by all present.

Miss Floyce Wooten of Crossen, Texas, while visiting her uncle Judge Wooten, near Bowers' Mill, Lawrence County, in attempting to cross Spring River, was drowned. The horse attached to the buggy was also drowned. The young lady's body was recovered. She was a relative of the Wootens of Liberty township, this county.

Mrs. Thos. Gregory of Pierce City, died Saturday. She was rested? northeast of Cassville, about 5 miles, and was a daughter of the late Harmon Roberts. They resided for many years near town.

Frank R. Massey of Springfield has been appointed administrator of Robert D. Massey's estate; they are brothers. His personal property valued at $15,000 and he owned some real estate. His estate has been valued at from $100,000 to $200,000, and we cannot understand the argons? given out.

Mrs. Mae Quinn of Golden, visited her father, R. G. Salyer and family, Saturday and Sunday.

A. M. Harrett has been arrested on a charge of murdering Mrs. Winkleman and robbing her of $9,000, sometime ago at Fayetteville, Ark. The testimony is circumstantial. Harrell is held without bond.

John Bradford has returned to his home near Eagle Rock. He had been staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Ayers, 2 1/2 miles southwest of town to have his left treated, that was amputated some time ago, on account of having been shot. He is able to be about on crutches.

A Mr. Stumpff of near Cato, died Wednesday. He was the father of Frank Stumpff of this city.

J. E. Tucker and Harve Bryant of Golden, were in town this week.

Mrs. Lela Parrish of St. Louis, has been visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Reynolds and little daughter Maud and friends of this city.

Mrs. Mary Moody of near Monett, died Nov 15, 1909, age 100 years and 2 months. She was born Sept 14, 1809, near Charleston, S. C. She was the grandmother of D. S. Mayhew the well known attorney of Monett.

Dr. Strick Foster of Seligman was in town Tuesday and as usual met his old time friends with a hearty handshake and greeting. For fully thirty years he has been a respected citizen of our county and married a most estimable young lady at Washburn, Miss Jane Legg. The Dr., is an honorable man and is surgeon for the M. & M. A. R. R. at Seligman, and will attend a meeting of the surgeons of that time at Leslie, Ark., Nov 30th. He enjoys a very locative practice.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hisey, yesterday morning, Nov 26, a daughter.

A child of Henry Barnes of near Seligman, has the scarlet fever. Dr. Newman, county physician went there Wednesday and quarantined the family.

Chas. Bass of Monett, was lodged in jail Tuesday, on a charge of snatching a ladies hand bag in the city last week. His partner Emmett Granger made his escape.

Mrs. Mary Leland mother of Mrs. Mat Roberts of Golden, is dangerously sick. She is 83 years old and her recovery is considered very doubtful.  Later - We learn that Mrs. Leland died Thursday evening.

Shoal Creek News: Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Edwards are the proud parents of a ten pound baby girl.

Purdy News: Owing to the death of her brother Miss Hazel Lough dismissed school Monday for the reminder of this week. She teaches at Hope Dale.

Clark News: Elvira Pitcock of Gravette, Ark., is visiting her sisters, Elizabeth Dabbs and Catherine Howerton and other relatives for the past week.

Hazel Dell News: Mr. and Mrs. Fonso Antle are the proud parents of a son, born last week.

Union Valley News: Tom Creason and family of Tatten Hollow and Will Cole and family all spent Sunday at L. M. Sensensey's.

Wayne News: Alfred Gilbert and family moved to Washburn last week.

Wayne News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Antle Thanksgiving day, a fine baby boy. Mother and babe doing well, but we learn Fonso's case is a serious one.

King's Prairie News: Ed Henderson is home on a visit from the Springfield Business College.

December 4, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

Arthur Burrow and Willard Stapleton went to Kansas City Thursday to meet the remains of Prof. J. E. Lough and accompany them to the place of Interment at Chetopa, Kan. Purdy Guide

George Lewis entered a plea of guilty on two informations [sic] filed against him with selling whiskey in violation of the local option law in the city of Neosho and Judge Hoffman fined him $300 on each charge. Lewis went to jail on the first fine and was paroled on the second. All other charges against Lewis were dismissed. Neosho Democrat.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Fonso Antle of Exeter township, Nov 25, a Democrat son.

Henry Dunn and wife of the Pasley neighborhood have gone to Scott County Ark., to visit his old home.

Ash No. 2 News: Born to Thurn Nodine and wife on the 20th, a girl. Mother and babe are doing well.

Edward Easley of near Eagle Rock on White River, was in town Wednesday. About 65 years ago he was born on the farm he now lives on, and is probably the oldest native born citizen living in that section. Ned Easley's word is his bond.

On Oct 19, Drs. G. W. and S. A. Newman operated on a babe of Mr. and Mrs. Acea Beck residing east of town for a club foot. After removing the bandages, it appears that he deformity will be corrected.

Mrs. M. H. Roberts has the sympathy of all her acquaintances in Cassville on the death of her mother, Mrs. Mary M. Leland, Nov 25, 1909. Mrs. Leland was a true Christian and lived it. Rev. Gilbert conducted funeral services and then the remains were laid to rest in the Viney Cemetery.

John Mooney and wife of Washburn, were to leave last week for their old home in Ireland, where they expect to reside the remainder of their days with relatives. [Research Note: Both John and Bitty died at sea and were buried at sea - and according to family lore never made it back to Ireland.]

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Evans southeast of town, Dec 4, a daughter. Grand - dad Geo. Edmondson is powerful glad and is wondering what he will do Christmas.

H. P. Sons attended his father near Seligman, during is last sickness.

Lela Sims, age about 8 years, died Sunday night, Dec 5, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sallee of Exeter, of a spinal trouble. She was a step-daughter of Ernest Sallee and a daughter of Mrs. Sallee by a former marriage. She was a very lovable little girl having a splendid disposition, was well liked by all her numerous acquaintances. The remains were laid away in Maplewood Cemetery, Monday afternoon. Thus over a happy home the shadow of a little grave has fallen, and as another has said, it is wonderful how long a shadow a little grave can throw. Bright, happy and cheerful, she carried sunshine with her where ever she went. She had always a smile and pleasant word for her friends. Her death comes as a shadow to the relatives and friends who loved her so dearly.

Mrs. Caroline Todd, wife of Andrew J. Todd of near McDowell died last Saturday, Dec. 4,  age 67 years. She left a husband and 3 children to mourn her death. The remains were laid to rest in the Calton Cemetery. She was a daughter of Andrew J. Marbut, an old time citizen of this county. 

December 18 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

Mrs. Susan Fly, widow of the late Rev. J. B. Fly well and favorably known in Southwest MO, during life, died in Aurora, Sunday, aged about 69 years. Mrs. Fly was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Woodward old time residents of the Woodward's Creek country and is a sister of Mrs. D. Fly, Jeff, Robt and Sam Woodward. She left thee sons and two or three daughters. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Rev. E. W. Love conducted funeral services at Purdy, Monday, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. She has many relatives and friends in Barry County, that will grieve to learn of her death. "So he gives his beloved sleep." Her children and her grandchildren shall rise up and call her blessed. All her sons attended the funeral.

[Abstract]  ___, 2 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Burrows of Purdy died Sunday night of brain trouble. The remains were interred Tuesday .

Married Saturday, Nov 28, Frank Hudson and Miss Cora Bennett. We wish them a happy and prosperous married life.

Dr. Bailey of Cassville, attended the funeral of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Alsie Cox Saturday afternoon.

Memorial services were held at the M. E. Church Sunday evening in Memory of the late John E. Lough.

"Red" Higgs of the Woodward's Creek country has gone to New Mexico, to visit his son James and his daughter, Mrs. Sherman Lane and families at Texline, N. M.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Lowder, Dec 12, 1909, a son. There is a question about the young fellow polices as both of his grandparents were Jacksonian democrats, and the youngster will manifest great ability and good sense, by assuming the principles of his grandparents.

Mrs. Elijah Drake of Sour Lake, Texas, has been dangerously ill, but we are glad to state, that she is improving and we hope to hear of her early recovery. She is a daughter of M. L. Abernathy.

Sam Henson's babe of Shell Knob township, has the typhoid fever.

December 25, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO

Mrs. Susan E. Fly who died at Aurora last week, had four sons who were Phineas and Clarence of Aurora, J. N. of Fairfax, Okla., and M. F. of Nevada, and two daughters Misses Leona and Clara Fly.

Married, Wednesday, Dec 22, 1909, at the residence of W. H. Martin in this city, by Squire Plattenburg, Clarence Tarvin and Miss Bessie Hurbut of near Wheaton. Both are members of old and well known families, and we wish them a long and happy life. They returned home this evening.

John Engdahl brought A. Mathews son up from Seligman, Monday for stealing a grip. Square Patterson presented him with a 30 days rest in the county jail. He is 20 years old and says his home is in Michigan.

Squire Patterson of Seligman awarded Gene Murray a $5.50 fine Monday, for disturbing the peace.

Thomas White of Neosho, died Dec 21, aged 65 years, leaving one son. The Democrat says he was rated as being the wealthiest man in Neosho.

John Sherman and Wm. Dawson were arrested on the 18th, for cruelty to a horse, they were driving. They were given five days in the county jail. They claimed to be preachers and said they belonged to a colony in Wright County.

W. M. Adams, the monument man has purchased of R. G. Mitchell, a new Studebaker buggy.

Ash No. 2 News: Sam Vanderpool and family were visiting at James Privitt's Sunday.

Moors Farwell and wife, Sam Skelton, Chas. Curry, J. W. Davis, and J. W. Garrett of Eagle Rock, were in town the first of this week.

A reward of $300. has been offered for Herbert Jones who broke jail at Galena, after he had been convicted of murder.

Edward Easley of near Eagle Rock was in town Monday. He said O. D. Harbert's letter in the Eureka Springs Flashlight, contained many mistakes, about the position taken on war issues, by the old timers near Golden.

Thursday, the six months old babe of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Eagle of Pleasant Ridge township, was found dead in its little buggy. The family were all out of the room for awhile and on returning found the little fellow dead, with its head hanging downward. It was buried in the Calton Cemetery.

Mrs. Crouch, wife of the Rev. Crouch of Pleasant Ridge Township, died Dec 18, from the bursting of a blood vessel in her head. Rev. Whittington conducted funeral services after which the remains were laid to rest in the Calton Cemetery.
