October 5, 1911, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Catron of Kings Prairie were in Cassville Saturday. Mr. Catron is teaching the Kings Prairie school this year.

New sorghum is now upon the local market. It will not be plentiful this year as last.

Constable J. H. Baird went to McDowell Monday and placed under arrest J. M. Stubblefield who is charged with drawing a gun on A. S. Foot. Stubblefield gave bond and the preliminary will be held before Squire Hemphill, Saturday. Stubblefield is foreman of the McDowell mines. Foot was at one time foreman. The trouble came up in a restaurant at McDowell. [Research Note: James Hezekiah Baird was married to Hannah Caldonia Matlock, daughter of James Baird and his wife Mary Ann Longley.]

Robert Easley of the Roach district was in Cassville Monday. Mr. Easley is one of the prominent farmers in that part of the county. He was in Cassville for some farming implements.

Born, Oct 3, to Mr. and Mrs. Berry Price, west of town, a daughter.

Tom Brown has been doing some good work at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Horine, September 25, a daughter.

J. F. Black has purchased a new Remington typewriter.

Howard Funston has moved his jeweler store to the Walker building.

Samuel J. Salyer and Chas. Talbert went to St. Louis Saturday night.

Rev. C. M. Smith has moved from his farm north of Exeter to Exeter.

Constable Wolfenbarger of Golden was in Cassville Wednesday of last week on his way home from Granby. He had with him Chas. Knock, Jr. of Golden, who had run away with his father's team. The officer was notified of the affair by the boy's father. He was followed and overtaken near Granby.

Oak Ridge News: Frank Brown of Hungry Hollow has moved on Geo. E. Brown's place and will work for George.

Oak Ridge News: Mrs. W. H. Cooper was called to Kansas City, Saturday, Sept 23, to the funeral of her grandson, Clarence Morely, a son of Mrs. Bertie Elrod. He was about 21 years old. His father lived near Cross Hollows when he was small. His death was due to appendicitis. He never rallied after the operation.

Clio News: Alfred Peters of Crane was visiting here Saturday and Sunday.

[Abstract] Garner Bound Over for First Degree Murder. The preliminary hearing of Cute Garner was held before Squire Hilton at Osa Thursday. The murdered boy's father was asked to testify. Garner was bound over to the circuit court without bail.

Shell Knob News: Mrs. Dolly Snyder and baby who have been poorly are thought to be improving now.

Seligman News: The stork visited the homes of Denny King and Tom Pratts last Friday night.

Seligman News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. H. Walker, on Saturday, the 7th, a fine boy.

Seligman News: Noah Anderson is having a six room cottage built on his farm.

Viola News: Grandma Oxford is on the sick list.

Washburn News: Born to Wm. Myers and wife, a son, Oct 7th.

Golden News: The two year old boy of Tilden Weddington who has had pneumonia is much better.

Forest Grove News: John Cook is still at work at the Butterfield mines.

New Site News: The schools at Walnut Grove and Shady Grove have been closed for this week on account of the scarlet fever scare, also the protracted meeting at New Site was postponed until Oct 22. The services Sunday were well attended and in the evening the presence of the Lord was felt in that several hearts were filled to overflowing. Eld. Brown preached two excellent sermons.

Union Valley News: Mrs. Bridgman of Exeter and son, John, of St. Louis, spent Sunday night at Grant Edens.

Pioneer News: Mrs. Clifford Scott and children left for a visit to their old home in West Virginia Monday.

Clark News: Curtis Vaught, wife and mother, starts today (Monday) for California to spend the winter with Mr. Vaught's two sons and a brother. Grandma Vaught is about 97 years old and seems to be in pretty fair health. We wish them a safe journey. [Research Note: In 1880 Curtis and Sarah Vaught were living in Shoal Creek Twp., of Barry Co., MO, along with children William, Mary P., John, Mandy and Mary M. Curtis was born in Georgia, about 1847.]

On the 12th of October at 2 o'clock p.m., death made its way into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnand and claimed their loving son, Louis, age 13 years, 9 months and 17 days. [Click here to read]

Cyril Reese who has fever at the home of his father,  D. G. Reese, on Washburn Prairie, is recovering.

A. M. Farwell and J. N. Skelton of Eagle Rock were in Cassville Saturday as witnesses in the final homestead proof of H. A. Vosburg.

The news has recently reached Cassville that John Plummer of Webb City was married several weeks ago to a Mrs. Dodd of that city. John had been keeping his marriage a secret. His Cassville friends will be surprised to know of his becoming a "benedict".

Mrs. James Johnston and little daughter, Agnes, have been visiting Mrs. Johnson's daughter, Mrs. O. H. Hudson.

Viola News: Virgil Arnold and family of Washington are visiting his parents.

Wayne News: One of John Box's horses got killed on the railroad track Sunday.

Wayne News: Lillie Salmon of Kansas is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Erwin.

Wayne News: Born to George May and wife, a girl.

Oak Ridge News: Mrs. W. H. Cooper, who went to Kansas City three weeks ago to attend her grandson's funeral visited her brother, I. O. Payne of Eldorado Springs, and arrived home Tuesday.

Fields News: Ernest Periman, Ive Periman's little son, was thrown from a mare the other day and stove his should up some but didn't brake any bones.

Wheaton News: Rufus Burks died at his home at Ridgley Wednesday evening and was buried at the Concord Cemetery Thursday. He was afflicted with inflammatory rheumatism.

Eagle Rock News: The Farwell Bros are moving their saw rig on the Mary Cole place.

Eagle Rock News: Walter Young is building a new resident.

Cross Hollows News: Della, little daughter of Sam Johnson, who has typhoid fever is slowly improving.

Cross Hollows News: Sorry to hear of the illness of James Patton who has typhoid fever. Hope he will soon recover.

Carr News: A Mr. Allen living 7 miles south of Berryville came down last Saturday and traded Tom Smith's nice 8 year-old mare for two young mules.

Mineral Springs: Scroggins & Brandon have been sawing wood for the England Bros., the past week, will saw for Mr. Willard this week.

Washburn Prairie News: Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Burnett and sons, Earl and Eugene of Washburn, visited the latter's brother, Henry West and family, Sunday.

Washburn Prairie News: Cyril Reese who has typhoid fever is improving.

Washburn Prairie News: Miss Clara Longley is visiting her uncle, Abe Cantrell, and family at Wheaton. [Research Note: Abraham Cantrell's sister Sarah Ellen Cantrell was married to Joseph Asbury Longley. Their daughter was Clara Longley. Clara married Otto Ruppert in 1913 in Barry.]

Oak Ridge News: T. B. Davis took Homer Boyer and Homer Davis to the Rock Creek hills Sunday where they will cut logs for the Earl Shore saw mill and hunt game.

Oak Ridge News: W. S. Hankins, wife and son, Truman, started to Scammon, Kan., Tuesday morning with a load of household goods and a cow for Geo. R. Wheeler who formerly lived west of White's mill. They expect to visit Zodac Plummer of Red Oak on their way back.

Lone Elm News: Mrs. Liney Stockton is not very well at present.

Lone Elm News: Sam Blankenship that got kicked by a horse is able to be up.

Wheaton News: While returning from the fair at Cassville Friday night, the team that John Kluty and Mon Shewmake were driving became frightened and turned the buggy over, spilling the above about. No serious damage was done.

Shell Knob News: Elbert Epperly and Frank Brock are in Idaho.

Butterfield News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Holder, the 16th, inst., a girl, Dr. Jones of Monett was the attending physician.

Viola News: Miss Ella Marenholtz attend the teachers association at Galena last week.

Rocky Comfort News: W. E. Poor and wife who recently came in from Texas are very sick at the home of their son, near here, old age is attributed to the general breakdown.

Forrest Grove News: C. B. King and wife were visiting Arthur Smith and wife near Gaddis Sunday night.

Forest Grove News: Will Binderim is quite sick with typhoid fever at the home of Wm. Ennis.

Forest Grove News: W. T. Bradley's have purchased a new organ.

Union Valley News: Columbus Eden of Purdy spent Sunday night and Monday with his brother, Grant Eden and family. [Research Note: Columbus and Grant Eden were the sons of Jonathan Eadon and his wife Melinda Stockton Martindale.]

Union Valley News: Mabel, Guy, and Ross Cole spent Sunday at the Keesters near Wayne. [Research Note: Guy Charles Cole, Mabel Clara Cole, and William Ross Cole were the sons of Fred and Lena Estella (Antle) Cole. Fred married later in life, in 1941, to Lona Bell (Haddock) Autry, after her husband, Silas McDonald Autry had died. Fred's wife, Lena, died in 1940.]

Shady Grove News: Mrs. W. J. Reed went to Monett last Saturday to be at the bedside of Ralph Hawk, her grandson, who has typhoid fever.

Exeter News: Ben Elsey who has been sick with typhoid fever for some time is improving.

Exeter News: Mrs. Laura Autry who has been visiting her father Jas. Lawson for sometime returned to her home in Oklahoma Saturday night accompanied by her brother Neal Lawson.

Exeter News: The pie supper Saturday night was postponed because Prof. Hodge could not be there on account of the sickness of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Joe McCary, school was dismissed Monday.

Viola News: A sweet little girl came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Bray, November 3. "Bine" says she is the sweetest thing he ever processed.

Lone Elm News: Wesley Long has come home on a visit.

Lone Elm News: John Long has come home to stay this winter.

Lone Elm News: Davis Doty is having smoke house built over a cellar.

Carr News: Uncle Jacky Ward is still very poorly, he made his will last Friday. He says his days are short here on earth.

Seligman News: Mr. Birks died on Friday, was laid to rest Saturday forenoon. He leaves a wife and little girl to mourn his death. Their many friends sympathize with them in their sorrow.

Seligman News: A Mr. Sickles who moved to a farm on Sugar Creek from Woodward, Okla., about one month ago, died of typhoid fever and his body was shipped back to Woodward for burial, Saturday evening. He leaves a very young wife and baby of about 18 months old.

Gunter News: Grandma Whittington is visiting her son at Purdy.

Union Valley News: W. O. Widders died Sunday Nov. 5th and was buried Nov. 7th at Bethpage. He leaves a wife one daughter and three sons.

Sunny Side News: Mr. Sible, who came to this county, from Woodward, Okla., as few weeks ago died Tuesday and was taken back to Oklahoma by his brother for burial. He leaves a wife and two little children, one which is helpless.  She has no parents, two of her her little brothers had made their home with them. They came to this county with a bright and prosperous future in mind before them intending to buy land and build them a happy home but he was silently called by the angels to this eternal home in Heaven.

Washburn News: Mrs. Curtis Martin and sister Miss May Hancock arrived Friday evening from Kansas for an extended visit with their parents, Wm. Hancock and family.

Washburn News: Born to Walter Jones and wife Nov 3rd a daughter.

Butterfield News: Jas. Craig and other boys were out hunting Wednesday of last week and Jim was accidentally shot by Robert Amos, being about thirty yards distant, most of the charge striking him in the chest and abdomen. Dr. Keith was called and rendered assistance. It is not yet known what the result will be as he is not doing well.

Butterfield News: C. A. Rose of Purdy was perambulating through our town in his buzz wagon one day last week.

Mrs. C. H. Hadley who has been in Pierce City for the past week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hudson, attending Mrs. Hudson, who is ill spent Saturday and Sunday at home. She returned Monday.

Jas. Brandenburg of Butterfield, R. H. Elam of Eagle Rock and James Elrod of Seligman attended I. O. O. F. Lodge here Friday night.

Chas. Mitchell and wife of Rudy, Ark., visited Mr. and Mrs. John Ivey last week. Mrs. Ivey is a niece of Mr. Mitchell's. They left Saturday night for Tennessee.

Dr. C. G. Kelley of Eagle Rock returned Saturday from a weeks visit with his son and the family, a son-in-law and the family of a son in-law Noah Adams, who live near Neosho.

James Elrod who recently moved to the Price farm near Seligman was in Cassville Friday.

Judge B. L. Evans has returned to Cassville after an extended visit with his son, Jess Evans and Mrs. Perry Evans of Elsey, Stone County.

Mrs. Florence Stryker and little son of Blue Rapids, Kan., are visiting Mrs. Stryker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Skelton at Eagle Rock.

Geo. W. Marbut Dead: George Washington Marbut, one of this county's pioneer citizens passed away at his home near Bethel Church in the north part of the county, Friday, Nov 3, at the advanced age of 79 years, from broken health and general debility. [Click here to read]

Oak Ridge News: Mrs. John Johnson went Saturday to Reeds to her son's Elmer Dalton, his wife being reported dangerously ill.

Oak Ridge News: Mr. Smith of Hungry Hollow died last week. He had been a sufferer for several weeks. He leaves a wife an 4 children and father to mourn their loss. His father who lives near Verona stared with him the last few weeks. To the bereaved we tender our sympathy.

Butterfield News: If Ernest Ferguson was the cause of the blizzard Saturday we wish he had gone to California to get married.

Golden News: John Wright who has been sick for some time, died Saturday morning and was buried Sunday evening at Vina cemetery. The funeral was held at the church house at Golden conducted by Rev. W. C. Gilbert.

Washburn News: Mrs. Jennie Hamilton of this place and G. W. Gurley of Purdy were united in marriage at the Beagle Hotel at Exeter Thursday at noon by Rev. Chas. Welch the officiating minister, immediately after the ceremony, they departed for the dinning room where an elegant dinner was served. Mrs. Gurley is well known in this county having lived here for 30 years and her acquaintances wish her much happiness. Mr. Gurley is one of Purdy's substantial citizens and is well known by business men as a man of sterling worth. They will reside in Purdy. We wish them many years of happiness and success.

Forest Grove News: Ernest Ferguson and Miss Edna Wallace accompanied by Horace Ferguson and Miss Tisha Hadley all of Butterfield drove to the home of Rev. Ennes Saturday morning where Mr. Ferguson and Miss Wallace were joined in the bonds matrimony by Rev. Ennes. Mr. Ferguson is at present teaching the Oak Ridge school and has made many friends near here. We wish for them a life of happiness and success.

Pleasanton News: Born to L. Plummer and wife, a fine girl, Nov. 1.

Pioneer News: James Stewart and family returned last week from a visit to Mrs. Stewart's sister, Mrs. Evans, in Stone County.

Homer Fare of the Lone Elm vicinity northeast of Cassville, 12 miles was given a preliminary hearing Saturday before Justice Pattenburg upon a charge of criminal assault. He was bound over under $500. bond.

Hubert Barnum visited his mother, Mrs. John Barnum, last week. Mr. Barnum brought to the people of Cassville the sad news of the death of his wife at Spokane, Wash., a short time ago. They had gone to Spokane for Mrs. Barnum's health. Oklahoma not agreeing with her. Mrs. Barnum had visited here often and had made many friends in Cassville. She was a young lady of culture and refinement and was beloved by all who knew her.

Butterfield News: Nelsa Austin and wife of Olympia, Wash., are visiting relatives and friends in this vicinity.

Exeter News: The little daughter of C. M. Smith who has been sick for sometime is slowly improving.

Exeter News: Charles Haddock and family have returned from a visit in Oklahoma. [Research Note: This is Charles Haddock who was married to Florence Moore. He was a son of Richard Ransom and Sarah (Browning) Haddock, and a grandson of Charles Haddock, Jr., and his second wife Susan (Meyers) Rumbaugh.]

Mineral Springs News: Grandma Maxwell has gone to live with her son, Andrew Young this winter. He came after her last Saturday.

Forest Grove News: Will Binderim who has been sick for abut six weeks at the home of his father-in-law, Wm. Ennes is improving. He is able to be up a little each day.

Gunter News: Nelson Austin and wife from out near Seattle, Wash., is visiting the latter's parents, D. P. McPhail and wife and other relatives.

McDowell News: Porter Calton, our teacher, attended the institute at Purdy Thursday and Friday.

McDowell News: Mary E. Doty, daughter of Uncle Mart Hilton, died at Aurora, Nov 9, 1911. She leaves a husband and four children, was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Rock Creek News: Mrs. Anna Aldridge went to Cassville one day last week to have her eyes treated.

Rock Creek News: The meeting closed at Mano, Sunday with three conversions, they were Floyd Easley, Mrs. Ed Beck and Miss Ivy Smith. The preachers Bros. Pryor and Kennedy, returned home Sunday afternoon.

Rock Creek News: Mrs. Susan Smallwood's daughter of Idaho is visiting her, and also her son, Jim Ethridge, of Texas.

Rock Creek News: Mrs. Walter Williamson who has been very low with typhoid fever is slowly recovering.

Seligman News: Jim Tilford has gone south to work with a bridge gang.

Seligman News: Mrs. Samantha Holt is visiting her mother, Mrs. Marilda Murray, living one-half mile north of town.

Golden News: Arther Eden was seen in Grandview, Ark., Saturday. He was accompanied by his brother-in-law, John Suiter, of Purdy.

The body of Mrs. Martha Graham, step-mother of V. M. Graham, which was buried in Oak Hill cemetery last week was taken up Friday and sent to Mrs. Graham's old home in Illinois for burial.

The case of state vs. Harry Cox was continued when the case was called Monday. The reason offered by his attorneys in asking for the continuance was that certain witnesses wanted by the defendant could not be secured.

Thos. Arnold of Viola has been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Riley Hale. He has a son who has only recently recovered for a long spell of sickness in a hospital in North Dakota.

Obituary: Died at his home near Clio, Nov 25th, James Bilie, age 52 years. Jim was well known and well respected by all and was a member of the Methodist Church. He leaves a wife, one step-son, one step-daughter, an aged mother, five brothers and five sisters and a host of other relatives and fiends to mourn his departure. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Moore of Aurora and the body laid to rest in the Clio Cemetery.

Tom Arnold who has been located at Grand Fork, N.D. was came in Sunday. After visiting his sister, Mrs. W. R. Hale, he went to Viola to visit his father, Thomas Arnold, Sr.

Washburn Prairie News: Miss Mary Crane who is teaching at roaring River visited her brother, G. A. Crane, who is boarding at P. H. Aults, Saturday and Sunday and attended the pie supper.

Shell Knob News: Anseny Brock is not very well at present.

Shell Knob News: W. J. Brock and children took Thanksgiving dinner at S. W. Blythe's.

Lone Elm News: Grandpa and Grandma Smith, returned to their home near Purdy, Friday after a two weeks visit with their daughter, Mrs. Ollie Henson and family.

Exeter News: Ike Senseney has returned after an absence of several weeks.

Exeter News: Miss Violet Smith who has been sick for some time with typhoid fever has suffered a relapse and is in a dangerous condition. [Research Note: This may be the same Violet who was the daughter of Rev. Charles M. and Eliza V. Smith of the Butterfield area. In 1910 she was age 10.]

Seligman News: Word was received of the serious illness of Joe Finn last week. Last reports was he was better.

Seligman News: Mr. Bryson died Saturday morning of pneumonia. About three years ago he bought the Rubow farm north of town. He was an energetic man and well liked by his many neighbors. He leaves a wife and daughter to mourn his death. Sincere sympathy of all is extended to them in this hour of sadness.

Seligman News: Henry Walden who has been in Washington for some time returned to Missouri Saturday to visit his mother, Mrs. Bud Smith.

Wayne News: We learn Bro. C. M. Smith begins a protracted meeting at Exeter Sunday night. We hope it will be a great success. [Research Note: Charles M. Smith was listed in 1910 as a clergymen of the Baptist Church and was living in Butterfield. His wife was Eliza V., age 49. They'd been married 29 years. They lived between Jasper and Thomas Sapp.]

Clio News: We were sorry to hear of the death of William Suttles of Leann. While he was sick for some time, the bore his sickness with patience until the end. The bereaved family have our heartfelt sympathy.

Pleasant Ridge News: Wm. Suttles and family, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Black, Ambrose Black, Misses Ora and Bertha Black of Monett and Miss Verna Black of Pierce City attended Uncle Calloway Black's funeral Friday.

New Site News: Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Higgins will leave this month for Liberty where Oscar will enter school at William Jewell College to prepare himself for the ministry. [Research Note: Oscar married Mabel Clare Banks and are both buried at New Site Cemetery. He was the son of Andrew Thomas and Martha Mahala (Montgomery) Higgins.]

Obituary: Polly Woodward was born in Ray County, Tennessee, Feb 10th, 1837. Died Dec. 2nd 1911, aged 74 years, 9 months and 22 days. [Click here to read]

Mount Pleasant News: Mabel Prevo the young wife of George Prevo died Tuesday 19th, her body was bought to Mount Pleasant Cemetery Wednesday 20th, for interment. Funeral service were conducted by Rev. M. J. Combs after which her her body was laid to rest in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Washburn Prairie News: Clyde Puett and sister, Miss Gusta, of Roaring River, are spending the holidays with the family of Rev. H. J. Hood.

Washburn Prairie News: Miss Addah Longley who is teaching near Monett is spending a week with homefolks.

Clark News: Died at her residence 4 miles south of Monett, Mrs. Mabel Prevo, on Dec 19, 1911, age 17 years, 10 months and 21 days. Was married to George Prevo, April 26, 1911. Mabel was the daughter of Judge Hilker near Corsicana and an excellent woman. She was converted at the age of 13 years and lived a constant Christian life and will be greatly missed by her relatives and friends. Her remains were laid to rest here in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery after funeral services by Rev. Combs. She leaves a husband father and mother, 2 brothers and 4 sisters to morn their loss. We extend sympathy to the bereaved family and say not to sorrow as those ho have no hope.

Clark News: Mrs. Florence Howerton was called to the bedside of her sister, Mrs. Mabel Prevo, south of Monett.

W. C. Tucker of Golden was in Cassville Friday. He stated that about $150. per week was being paid for labor at the mines on Owl Creek near Golden and that considerable mineral had been taken out.

Frank Duffy of near Jenkins died Friday, Dec 22, of a kidney and lung trouble. He leaves a wife an one child. He was about 25 years of age.

P. A. Varner, south of town and Miss Lottie Hadley of Exeter were married Sunday, Dec 24. Mrs. Varner is a daughter of the late E. Hadley of Exeter. Mr. Varner is one of the community's best citizens. [Research Note: Peter Asbury Varner was the son of William Moulton and Catherine Shipley.]

Mrs. Glenn Prevo of near Purdy died last week from the result of injuries received from a fall down a stairway at her home. Mrs. Prevo had been married only a few months. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hilker. [Research Note: In the other item her husband was given as George Prevo.]
