Jenkins News: Gid Bolin had two horses killed by lighting Saturday night.

Butterfield News: Mrs. Dave Talbert and Mrs. Dr. Leith attended the funeral of their cousin, Walter Powell, Saturday at Pierce City.

Flat Creek News: Mrs. Clara Taylor received a nice gold ring from her daughter, Mrs. Holstein, in Washington, for a birthday present.

Mrs. Jas. Johnson of Monett visited her daughter, Mrs. O. H. Hudson Sunday. She was accompanied by her little daughter, Miss Agnes.

Mrs. Geo. Joslin received news this week of the serious illness of a brother-in-law who lives in Iowa.

Miss Bland Houston who has been in Idaho is visiting her brother, Wm. Houston, and family at Purdy.

Misses Mae and Lena Combs of Monett visited their friends, Misses Lucy and Louise Landis, the latter par of last week.

In the death of Mrs. Samuel Bailey of Clio, that vicinity lost one of its best citizens. She was 55 years old and was one of the many victims of the dreaded disease consumption, which takes so many persons to a premature grave. She leaves a husband and seven children, five sons and two daughters. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Ennes east of Cassville and the body laid to rest in the Clio Cemetery.

Mrs. James Stacey and two little children of Oklahoma are visiting her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Montgomery, Jr.

Mrs. C. H. Hadley returned Saturday morning from a weeks visit with her father, J. B. Hudson, and Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Beaver at Pierce City.

Mrs. Clara Powell and son of Berryville have been visiting Mrs. Powell's uncle, J. W. Turner, and family. They returned home Tuesday morning.

Rev. and Mrs. Abe Carlin of Tulsa, Okla., were called to Monett last week by the sad death of their daughter, Mrs. Boggs, who was drowned. Rev. and Mrs. Carlin are well known in this county, which was for many years their home.

Walter Lamb, editor of the Marshfield Mail, died Thursday of spinal meningitis, age 32 years. He was sick from Monday to Thursday and was unconscious almost from the moment he was first taken. Lamb was a promising young man in his profession, well educated and prepared by a college training for his chosen work. He had only been engaged in the newspaper for a short time. He leaves no family.

Curg and John Boucher are in from Sulpher Springs, Tex., this week visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Boucher at Purdy. Curg is now editor of the Sulpher Springs Gazette, a weekly paper published in his home town. He spent Wednesday with friends in Cassville.

Mt. Grove News: Ira Marbut and wife visited Jeff Stockton and wife Sunday.

Clio News: April 30, the death angel visited our community and claimed for its victim the wife of Samuel Bailie. She was a victim of consumption, was sick four months. She bore her sickness with patience, waiting for the end to come. Susan was 55 years old joined the M. E. Church when very young and remained faithful until death. She leaves a husband, five sons and two daughters to mourn her loss. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Ennes of  near Cassville after which she was laid to rest in the Zion Cemetery to await the resurrection morn.  

Eagle Rock News: The Tucker boys and Pink Smith think that they are the champion fox hunters as they went out one night caught two the same night.

Eagle Rock News: Willie Farwell is reported better at present he has been sick for some time.

Eagle Rock News: Miss Jessie Reed has returned home after a short visit with her uncle, Bill Roller, of Seligman.

Eagle Rock News: Aunty Martha Curry who has been very sick is reported some better at present.

Eagle Rock News: Elmer Skelton has rented part of Sime Purse's farm and is cultivating it this spring.

Gunter News: Wm. Riddle and family attended church at Butterfield and spent the afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Merit Nickle.

Ash No. 2 News: Mrs. J. Hawkins lost a fine cow in the flood that swept down the hollow Saturday night one week ago.

Washburn Prairie News: Moulton Varner of Rock Springs visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Varner, Sunday.

Washburn Prairie News: Mrs. H. J. Hopkins and daughter Lulah and grand-daughter, Jennie, visited her daughter, Mrs. P. E. Smith and family of Eagle Rock, Saturday and Sunday.

Forest Grove News: Charley Norris and wife of Coffeyville, Kans., are visiting Mrs. Norris' father, S. H. Beeson, and other relatives near the Grove. 

Cross Hollows News: Roscoe Twilligear and Miss Susan Land drove to Cassville Wednesday where they were united in marriage by Squire Plattenburg. They have the best wishes of a host of friends.

The Pineville Herald states that Judge John C. Lamson was thrown from a wagon at his farm near Pineville one day last week during a runaway and received several cuts and bruises and a sprained wrist. The injuries were not reported to be serious. Judge Lamson is 86 years old but still as active as if many years younger. His many friends in Barry County will be pleased know of his escape without serious injuries.

J. H. Baird has resigned as marshal of the city of Cassville, Mr. Baird is constable of Flat Creek township and stated in offering his resignation that his reason for so doing was the duties of the two offices conflicted, making it difficult to properly look after the duties of the two office at those times.

Big Day for Barry County Schools. The Eight Grade graduation, spelling and declamatory contests made Saturday May 4 a red letter day for the year in the school work in this county. [Click here to read]

Answered Death's Call: James Leroy Shipman died at Pierce City, Sunday night, April 28, at the age of 32 years and 22 days of miners consumption. He was buried at the Pierce City cemetery April 30th, by the I. O. O. F. Lodge. Rev. Bert Smith conducted the funeral services.

He leaves a sorrowing mother, M. A. Shipman, three brothers, Bert, Irvin and John, also one sister, Lillie, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. His smiling face will be missed by his loved ones, but their loss is Heaven's gain.

May God be with the bereaved ones in their hour of sorrow.

Union Valley News: Uncle Clay Seman returned to Kansas City after quite a long visit with his niece, Mrs. O. G. Russell.

Jenkins News: Mr. Ellis of Aurora who is helping in the blacksmith shop took a trip home Sunday week.

Arnhart News: Charles McCracken of Flat Creek has been very low with pneumonia. His mother, Mrs. P. S. Windham, and sister, Mrs. Sigel Bowman, have been visiting him. They report him some better.

McDowell News: Everyone around here is in favor of building a new court house right now and not wait any longer.

Mineral Springs News: Dan Holliday and family visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Holiday, Sunday.

Mineral Springs News: Charley Erwin died at his home in Mineral Springs Saturday evening May 18, about 7 o'clock p.m. He had been very low with consumption for some time. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Sunday evening conducted by Rev. Smallwood, after which his body was laid to rest in the Mineral Springs Cemetery. To the bereaved family we extend our sympathy.

Mayflower News: Tom Vanzandt shipped a wagon load of produce from Avoca, Ark, Saturday. [Van Zandt]

Mayflower News: W. I. Vanzandt and wife went to Rogers, Ark., Thursday, 9th, and purchased a new set of harness.  [Van Zandt]

Washburn News: Miss Estella Pease went to Monett Tuesday to have dental work done and remained over night to attend the commencement exercises of the Monett high school.

Dry Hollow News: There was a pie supper given at the head of the river last Thursday night. There wasn't many out but all enjoyed themselves. Miss Mary Sills was awarded the cake as being the prettiest girl present.

Butterfield News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Gentry, a big girl, the 19th.

Butterfield News: The millers at this place have moved out the old engine and are going to put in a new gasoline engine.

Butterfield News: The berry growers had a meeting Saturday and are sending men south to hunt pickers. The men are: Ray Cowherd, Sig Whittington, and John Lewis.

Dr. C. M. Sparkman has rented the Lucky property in the north of town, which has been occupied by C. D. Higganbotham.

Charles Green of Osceola spent Wednesday and Thursday in this city visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Green and sister, Mrs. Sidney Parker.

Mrs. Lizzie Hodge of Stroud, Okla., is visiting her mother, Mrs. Vina Howard and grandmother Mrs. Mary Horner.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Gentry of Butterfield, Sunday, May 19, a son.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry McNally, northwest of Cassville, Friday, May 17, a son.

The C. & W. electric car got out of order Friday and other means of transportation on the line had to be used until an electrician from Springfield could come over and make the necessary repairs.

Fred Williamson of Butterfield passed through Cassville Friday on his way home from a trip to the county and Grandview, Ark., where he had been to see about getting hands to help in the berry fields. He reported the prospect for berries good.

Sam Blythe of Flat Creek was in Cassville Monday making proof before Circuit Clerk, W. R. Hale in a homestead case.

Sidney Parker has resigned his position as foreman at the Democrat office.

Mr. and Mrs. Port Potts of Wheaton visited Mrs. Potts mother, Mrs. J. T. Horner, Sunday.

Peter Young and John Hurley of Butterfield were at the county seat Monday. Mr. young is now eighty one years old and is in excellent health but is bothered some with paralysis.

Mrs. H. O. Abernathy and children who have been visiting at Pierce City returned home Friday.

P. S. Meyers of Washburn was here Wednesday. He sated that Washburn is shipping out a fine lot of strawberries but the acreage is not large enough to ship in car lots.

Prof. J. Turner Horner of Stella was in Cassville Thursday visiting his mother, Mrs. Mary Horner.

Frank Kiddo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Kiddo arrived in this city last Tuesday from Burton, Kan., where he had been attending school.

Mrs. Margaret Russell of Eagle Rock was in Cassville Tuesday. She left on the evening train for Purdy to visit relatives.

Will Farwell and his mother of Eagle Rock were in Cassville on Business Tuesday.

Mrs. Geo. Joslin received word Friday that a brother-in-law in Iowa had died of cancer of the throat.

Frank Riley, a fireman on the Frisco, was run over by a passenger train at Monett, Monday evening and instantly killed. [Click here to read]

Milt Abernathy, who is now in the soldiers home at Leavenworth, Kan., came to Cassville Tuesday to visit Arch Hessee and family.

James H. Carey of Monett became very insane rather suddenly last week. He has been taken to Neva for treatment.

E. W. Wallen, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of near Monett, has returned from a ten days business trip to Alabama.

Alam Kring fell from a wagon and broke an arm Sunday on the road home from Monett with J. B. Arnold who was hauling a load of ice to Cassville.

Mrs. Mary Ivey is visiting her son, Clarence, of Monett.

J. H. Dunlap of Monett was in Cassville Tuesday in the interest of his telephone company.

J. T. Wood of Cooper County, visited his nephew, Horace Hutchinson, of near town Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Wood is a real estate dealer and expressed himself as being well pleased with the farms about Cassville.

Mrs. C. A. Weber spent a few days this week with her daughter, Mrs. Rex Jones, of Wayne.

N. L. and Allen Hailey returned Friday from Berryville, Ark., where they were called by the illness and death of their mother, Mrs. Hubbert, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hailey and daughter, Miss Fonnie, remained for a few days visit.

W. M. Carlin and son, Pleasant, were in Cassville Thursday. They had been to their large stock ranch east of Cassville.

B. T. Coppedge was in Cassville Friday shaking hands with his many old time friends. He is now living at Bristow, Okla.. And from his appearance the world seems to be serving him well.

U. S. Lane of Purdy was a Cassville visitor Monday. Mr. Lane states that the strawberry shipments at Purdy are about over and that the shipments are short of what was expected on account of the heavy rains when the plants were in bloom and the lack of hands to pick the berries. Purdy shipped about 20 cars and they sold at from $1.20 to $1.25 a crate. [Research Note:  Ullissia Sherdin Lane was married to Ida England. He was a son of Wilson and Eliza (Long) Lane. And he was a grandson of Simon Hiram and Martha Tabitha (James) Long as well as a great-grandson of Hiram and Anna (Lakey) Long. Ida Cornelia England was born near Globe School House, in Greenup Co., KY, and was the daughter of Ohio born Ed W. England and his wife Angeline who was born in KY.]

Dog Hollow News: The death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Roberts and took from them their darling little Roy, age 2 months, 16 days. His little body was laid to rest in Sparks Cemetery. Bro. Kelley conducted the funeral. The parents have our deepest sympathy.

Hickory Grove News: Frank Rickman who has been visiting relatives in this vicinity will leave for his home in Washington Saturday.

Seligman News: Lock Collier and family of Chaffee are visiting relatives here.

Exeter News: Mrs. Mattie Osborne of Tulsa is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Elsey.

Exeter News: Robert Lauderdale died at his home Monday of this week, age 74 years. He fell a few days ago and fractured his hip which caused his death. Mr. Lauderdale had lived in Barry County many years and was well known. The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery, Tuesday.

Washburn Prairie News: Mrs. Kit Sims and daughter May and son Mat, visited her parents, M. B. Sparkman and wife, Saturday. Mr. Sparkman's health is much improved.

Washburn News: Ivan Reed and wife of near Exeter visited friends here Sunday.

Washburn News: Miss Alice Roller returned home Wednesday after a few days visit with her niece, Mrs. Manford Dummitt, and family of Fairview. [Research Note: Search also for the spelling of Dummit when researching this family name.]

Washburn News: Ernest Lund and wife left for their home at Cedar Kansas, Monday, after a few weeks visit with J. A. Pease and family. [Research Note: Minnie (Pease) Lund was the wife of Ernest Lund and the daughter of James Alvin and Janetta (Fetrow) Pease.  She lived in Cedar, Kansas near the Fetrow family.]

A. L. Galloway's father and mother of Jenkins have been visiting him. They left Tuesday for Monett to visit their daughter, Mrs. H. A. Gardner.

G. E. Skelton has moved from Eagle Rock to near Seligman.

Chas. Eden and wife of Seligman were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Eden, Saturday and Sunday.

Miss Maggie Ruddick clicked a successful term of school at Pasley Friday of last week.

W. J. Hensley of Pioneer visited his sister, Mrs. J. T. VanHook, last Thursday. 

Fred Meador will graduate from the University of Missouri Thursday. Next week he will become editor of the Republican.

Lynn Manley of Monett visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Manley, Sunday.

James Talbert brought Jewel Russell and John Reed down from Monett Monday to serve sentences in the county jail. Russell was convicted for whipping his wife and for disturbing the whole neighborhood. Reed was convicted for vagrancy.

Sheriff Newman is having the prisoners work on the roads of the county.

Oren Brattin closed a very successful school at Roaring River Friday. He is spending his summer vacation on a farm near Bentonville, Ark.

John Betterton of McDonald Township plead guilty Saturday in Squire Hemphill's court to common assault and was fined one dollar and cost.

Horace Counts, candidate for nomination for assessor on the Republican ticket, was in Cassville Saturday.

Harry Montgomery and wife of St. Louis spent a few days of last week with is parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Montgomery.

W. H. Bolton of Monett was fined $5. and cost Monday morning for getting on a train while intoxicated. He was brought down from Monett Monday evening by Prosecuting Attorney Talbert and lodged in the Cassville jail.

[Abstract] At three o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 23, at the home of the bride's mother, Miss Retta Talbert of this city and Mr. Lynn R. Jones of Exeter were married. Mrs. Jones is a daughter of Mrs. Dora R. Talbert. Rev. G. S. Yarbrough of the Christian Church performed the ceremony.
