He was doing general farming and had wife Ina who was age 25, born in MO. Her father was listed as born in MO. and her mother was born in IL. They had daughter Opal, age 9, and born in MO; and a son named Ermel who was, age 1 and 5 mos old, born in MO, and also living in the house Was Oassil Ethridge, a servant, age 18, born in MO. and both his parents were born in MO.

In 1910 Luther was again mentioned in the New Site News: Clyde Northcutt of Washburn and Miss Ora Haddock, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Abernathy drove to the home of Eld. Luther Carlin last Wednesday afternoon where they were united in marriage. Mr. Northcutt is one of Barry County's most successful teachers and is a fine Christian gentleman. Mrs. Northcutt is a most estimable young lady of noble Christian character and loved by all who know here. They have the best and heartiest wishes of all the their journeys through life together may be prosperous and happy. [Orrie Effie was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Josephine (Berry) Haddock. In 1911 Luther was mentioned as a minister in the New Site News: Eld. Luther Carlin has been called to take care of the Baptist church at Granby for full time and moved his family to that place last week. Luther's mother died in 1912. In the Cassville Republican the following account was located: Nancy Carlin, wife of Marshall Carlin; one of this county's most influential and substantial farmers, died last week after an illness of several weeks resulting from a lingering attack of lagrippe. She was 75 years old and had lived in this county all her life, having been born in Roaring River township. Mrs. Carlin as a devoted Christian woman and dearly beloved by relatives and friends. She leaves a number of children. They are Lafayette, Charles, Sherman, Thomas, Mrs. Samantha Hudson, John, Brit, Pleasant and Rev. Luther Carlin. She was a sister of Boone Haddock of Eagle Rock.  April 18, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO

In 1912 in the New Site News more was stated about Nancy's death: Mrs. Marshal Carlin died April 10, of pneumonia. She was seventy-five years old and the mother of nine children all of who are living and all were here for the funeral except one son. She was a member of the Purdy Baptist Church. Rev. Marion Smith of Exeter conducted the services. In 1920 Luther was living in McDonald County, MO. That record reads: 1920 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, McDonald Co., MO Richwood Twp., House # 83, Family # 83, Carlin, Luther, age 40, renting his home, and was born in MO. Both his father was born in VA, and mother was born in MO. His wife is Ina H., age 37, born in MO, her father born in MO, and mother was born in Illinois. Children are Opal H. a daughter, age 18, born in MO; Ermel J., age 11, born in MO; Ezekial B., age 8, born in MO; Hugh W., age 7, born in MO; and Maud M., age 4 and 3 mos, born in MO.

In 1930 Luther was back in Barry County and living near Monett. That census record reads: 1930 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Monett Twp., Barry Co., MO, District 19, house # 27, family # 27 listed Carlin, Luther as the head of the house, and he was age 50 and first married when he was age 19. He was born in MO, and listed that his father was born in WV and his mother in MO. His wife, was listed as Ina H., age 48, and she first married at age 17 and was born in MO. Her father was born in MO and her mother in IL. Children listed were Opal R., age 28, born in MO; Hugh W., was age 16, born in MO; Maud M. age 14, born in MO; and also in the house was Lolita O. Etheridge, female, age 5, born in MO. Her father was born in US and her mother in MO.

In 1939 Rev. Luther Carlin died. The abstract of he funeral home record reads: Rev. Luther Carlin born Barry Co., MO, on the 17th of Sept in 1879 and he died the 27th of April 1939, at 12 noon of Hodgkin disease. The burial was at Walnut Grove [New Site], and the funeral was 30th April 1939 at New Site Church at 2:30 p.m.. His father's name was given as William Marshall Carlin and his mother was listed as Nancy Haddock.

Union Soldier in Civil War and fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge, AR.   He was also known as B. F. and Benjamin Franklin Haddock. He enlisted Mar 24, 1862 and mustered in Apr 19, 1862 in Company H, 14th Missouri State Militia, Cavalry.   He was listed in the 14th MSM from April 1962 until March 1863 when he was transferred to Co M, 8th Mo. State Militia, Cavalry. Discharged Apr 18, 1865.  He received a pension beginning in 1890 and ended in 1924.

Descendants of Rev. Benjamin Franklin Haddock

Franklin Haddock was born November 22, 1839 on Capp's Creek, Barry County, Missouri, the third oldest of ten children born to William Haddock and Mary (Collins) Haddock. William Haddock's father, Charles Haddock, Sr., originally from Pitt Co., NC, was one of the earliest settlers in the Roaring River area of Barry County, Missouri. At the age of 18, Franklin was baptized and, in 1860, became a member of the New Site Baptist Church near Monett, Missouri.

Listed among the Carroll County, AR, of the Original Land Entries were Alexander, Franklin and Charles - 20n 25w Haddock Alexander, 20n 26w Haddock Alexander, 20n 27w Haddock Charles, 19n 25w Haddock Franklin, 20n 25w Haddock Franklin, and 20n 26w Haddock Franklin. It appears that Franklin lived in Carroll County, AR, for a short while. Carroll County not far from Barry County, MO.

Franklin Haddock married Emily Birkes on June 7, 1860, in Barry County. Emily was born February 24, 1839 in Madison County, Arkansas to Silas Birkes and Sally Rogers Birkes. Franklin and Emily began their married life in Barry County, first living with Franklin's parents on their farm at Capp's Creek. According to family legend, Emily gave her husband the nickname "Benjamin", beginning a life-long, but unofficial, addition to his given name. Friends and relatives frequently referred to him as Benjamin Franklin Haddock. On November 15, 1861 in Barry County, Franklin and Emily's first child Rachel was born.

Franklin Haddock enlisted in the Union cause on March 24, 1862 at Springfield, Missouri. He was mustered into service as on April 19, 1862 in Company H, 14th Missouri State Militia, Cavalry at Springfield. His physical description at the time was as follows: height, 5 feet 8 inches; complexion, fair; color of eyes, blue; color of hair, dark. Farming was listed as his occupation prior to service. Franklin's military file further states that he had enlisted for the duration of the war in Missouri. He was marked "present" on the company muster rolls for the 14th MSM from April 1862 until March, 1863 when he was transferred to Company M 8th Missouri State Militia, Cavalry.

During the early months of 1863, Franklin Haddock and his fellow soldiers were engaged in scouting missions and in battle against Marmaduke in the Springfield area. Franklin stated that the weather was extremely cold, often sleeting and raining, and that they were without tents or other suitable quarters while on scouting missions. It was during this time that Franklin contracted bronchitis and a throat condition that left him nearly voiceless for several years. First Sergeant, William W. Lee of Company M, 8th MSM stated in a sworn affidavit to the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions that because of his loss of speech, Franklin Haddock was relieved of guard duty. Even in his later years, Franklin never fully recovered from the loss of his voice. Chronic bronchitis also continued to bother him the rest of his life. Franklin Haddock was marked "present" on the muster rolls of the 8th MSM from March 1863 until April 1865, with the exception of September and October 1863 when he was on scouting duty and on November and December 1864 when he was on detached service.

According to family legend, the Confederates had captured Franklin at some point in his military service. He told his children and grandchildren that he had been allowed to escape unharmed, because both he and his captor were Masons, bound by their laws of brotherhood. However, there is nothing in his official military records at the National Archives to indicate that this actually happened.

Franklin Haddock was discharged on April 18, 1865 in Green County, at Springfield, Missouri. He received a pension for his service beginning in 1890 at the rate of $8 per month and ending in 1924 at the rate of $72 per month. His pension file contains several affidavits made on his behalf to the Bureau of Pensions by his fellow soldiers. They include First Sergeant William W. Lee, and privates Matthew T. Kerr, Joseph Walker, Lemuel C. Estes, Benjamin F. Kennedy, Charles H. Lance, Francis M. Henderson, and William Berry. It appears that Franklin Haddock remained on friendly terms with his fellow former soldiers since all the affidavits were made in Barry County or nearby counties and dated between 1896 and 1906.

After his military service ended, Franklin and his wife Emily became the parents of four more children. They were: Tincy, born June 7, 1865; Louisa, born November 19, 1866; Asa, born December 10, 1868; and Silas Birkes Haddock, born July 28, 1870, all born in Barry County, Missouri. Tincy and Asa died in infancy, but the other children grew to adulthood and later had families of their own. Franklin and Emily Haddock lived most of their lives in Barry County, with the exception of several years spent in Sebastian County, Arkansas during the 1890's. Franklin continued to farm, but also earned his living as a teamster when he was in poorer health and unable to do heavy farm work. He also served as a preacher for the Baptist faith at the Ione Baptist Church in Ione, Arkansas. Following their daughter Rachel Haddock Yocum Moore's death in 1894, Franklin and Emily helped to raise her five children.

Listed on the 1870 Barry County, MO, Federal Population Schedules, US Census was Frank Haddock, house # 107, age 31 born in MO, wife Emily age 30. Frank is listed as a farmer. They have children Emily 7, Rachel 3 both of whom were born in MO. Also living in the house was Sarah Bikes who was age 21 born in Arkansas. Next door in house # 108, is Robert Wilson and wife Juliett and both are 20 years old. In house # 106 on the other side of Frank Haddock is Jacob House who is 90 years old and who was born in PA.

House # 7, Family # 2, 1880, Prairie Twp., Carroll Co., AR, Hadock, Alexander born MO, AR, AL, and age 44, Polly age 40 born AR, and both parents born in IL, Children William J. age 18 born in MO, Henry B. age 15 born in MO, Johnny age 13 born in MO, Josephine age 8 born in MO, Betty age 6 born in MO, Albert E. age 1 born MO, also in the house was Haddock, Franklin age 40 born in MO, both parents born in KY, wife Emiley, age 40, born in AR, and both parents born in IL. Children are Rachel, age 14, born in MO, Louisa, age 13, born in MO, Silas, age 9, born in MO, and living in the house also was William Hague, age 41, works at sawmill, born in Il, father born in KY and mother born in AL, wife Polly, age 24, born in AR and both parents born in TN. The children were Hiram, age 11, born in IL, Turner, age 8, born in AR, John, age 6, born in AR, Jay?, age 3, born in AR, and Allen, age 1, born in AR.

Goodspeed's History, Lawrence Co., MO, In April, 1875, Rev. McCord Roberts located at Verona as pastor of the Baptist Churches at Billings, Verona, Newtonia, Granby, and Neosho. Mr. Sills was here for seven years. Rev. H. C. Lollar, who succeeded Mr. Sills in 1887, is now taking steps to build a house of worship at Verona. There are three Baptist societies at Verona -- one Swedish one Regular and one Missionary. In the fall of 1868 the new meeting-house of the old Baptists on Spring River was begun. The Baptists at Mount Vernon began work on their church building in July, 1869, Ira Creech being contractor. The Missionary Baptist Church of Mount Pisgah is three miles north of Mount Vernon. The Baptist Sunday-school at Mount Vernon was organized in April, 1874, with Elder Powell, W. M. Peak, John Cecil, W. N. Davis and William Decker, officers. At this time the Methodist Sunday-school was reorganized, with E. H. Hinshaw, president. The stations, preachers, clerks and number of members represented at the eighth annual meeting of the Lawrence County Association of Baptists, held in 1878, are given as follows: Aurora, Rev. Isaac Standlee; H. Neece, clerk; sixty members. Bethel, Rev. L. Allen; J. W. Lee, clerk; forty. Big Spring, Rev. James K. Pruitt; J. P. Johnson, clerk; --. Charity, Rev. 1900 Federal Population Schedules, US Census: Barry County, MO, Shoal Creek, Franklin Haddock, born Nov 1839, age 60, born in MO, father born in NC, mother in MO. Emily, his wife, was age 61, born Feb 1835 in Arkansas and both of her parents were born in AR. In the house was a grandson, Claude W. Yocum, age 19, born in AR born October 1881; Hattie B., age 16, born Nov 1882, a grand daughter born in AR, Catie V. Yocum born June 1889, grand daughter, age 5, born in Indian Territory; and Earl C. Moore, age 7, a grand son born in AR, born April 1882.

Emily Birkes Haddock died May 19, 1911 at Exeter, Barry County, Missouri and was buried at the Maplewood Cemetery. Following her death, Franklin married Clara Jane Simms Cramer Coon, who was twice a widow and who was both Union veterans. They married on November 9, 1911 at Purdy, Missouri. Sometime after their marriage, Franklin and Clara went to live in Dane, Oklahoma, with Clara's relatives, where they stayed until 1923.

In 1920, Frank Haddock was listed in Osage Co., OK, Federal Census, US Population Schedules, in house #85, Family # 79, Hominy Twp., as age 81 and with wife Clara, age 71, and was listed as the father-in-law of William O. Cramer who was age 48. Frank stated that he was born in Missouri and that his mother and father were both born in North Carolina.

Then sometime between July and November of 1923, Franklin moved to Forgan, Oklahoma with his grandson Earl Moore. Clara remained in Barry County with her relatives. Having ill health necessitated that Franklin and Clara to live separately and with relatives. Then sometime later, and in 1923, Franklin went to live with one of his granddaughters, Ethel Lance Graper, in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri. And that is where he died on February 16, 1924. He was buried next to his first wife Emily at the Maplewood Cemetery, Barry County, Missouri. [Ref: From the family files of Linda Stokes Hammesfahr]
