Wanda Mae Haddock, wife of Clarence H. Lechner, passed away July 11, 2003. She was the present president of the Haddock/Tucker Reunion Association and was an avid genealogist. She certainly will be missed by her family and friends.

The story below was posted here to honor her life.

Wanda, Ernest Haddock's daughter, wrote the following story. It reads: "Ernest was born to George Rittenhour and Marada Rose (Tucker) Haddock, July 24, 1903 in Eagle Rock, Barry Co., MO. He was the second child and the first son of eight children. The first son and daughter were the one they most depended on especially his mother. His mother and he seemed to have a special bond. He has told me many stories of his childhood. It must've been very hard for him. He had to plow the fields barefoot. If you are familiar with Roaring River and Eagle Rock area you know just how rocky the terrain is. He said worse than the rocks  - were the Cockle burrs that got between his toes.

One day his mother took pity on him and caught two hens and a rooster and sent George to town with them to get Ernest a pair of work shoes, which he did. When he gave them to him to wear they were worse than none at all. They had wooden soles and rubbed blisters on his heels.

He also told of a time in the fall of the year during sorghum making time. He had a job stomping down the cane so it could be processed. Again he had no shoes. It was cold weather and his feet would turn blue from the cold. One morning his dad told him to go by a neighbor's house to collect some money that he owed for some work he had done. This he did, and went by the store in Eagle Rock to purchase him a pair of work shoes. He lacked one penny having enough to get them. The merchant refused to let him have them.

He just cried when he told me this story. He also said that when they would go to town, the men loafing on the sidewalks would spit tobacco juice on their feet. This was really humiliating to Dad. They lived in a log cabin. I suppose it had a loft where the boys would sleep. Ernest said that one night he woke up nearly smothered. It had snowed during the night and had come through the cracks in the roof and covered his face until he couldn't breathe.

He took us to the place where the cabin had been. My sister found a rock that had been used for a doorstep, he had chiseled his initials in it. She dug it out and took it home. I picked up a wooden peg that was used to hold the logs together. I still have it.

School was a treat to him. He didn't get to go very often, just between plantings and harvest. He and Marie crossed the swinging bridge to get to Munsey to go to school. One day when they were walking home, a drunken Indian chased them. Just as they got under the fence, the Indian fell off his horse and they out ran him, and didn't stop until they got home. I'll bet they didn't know they could run so fast.

Ernest had a sense of humor and like to play pranks on people, he and his neighbors in Verona, had quite a competition on who could outdo the other. He liked to play baseball. On Sunday afternoons he and his brothers and neighbor boys got together and played baseball in someone's pasture."

Photo from the photo files of Don Cummons

Dane Martin, Darla Marbut, Joy Guentert and others who helped identify the people in this photo

This picture came from Don Cummons and was from the photo album of his mother Emily "Marie" Haddock Cummons. She is the "me" written in the picture. E. S. is her brother Ernest Salee Haddock. The parents are George Rittenhour Haddock and Rose (Tucker) Haddock. Ernest Salee Haddock was born in 1903. Ernest is the little boy who is probably between 1 and 2 years old dating the photo to have been taken in about 1904 or 1905. It was first though the photo was taken about 1900.

It was confirmed by Joy Guentert that the couple and children on the far right is Charles Kinion and Nora (Haddock) Tucker Family.

Darla Marbut stated that she thought the next couple on the left of Charles Kinion Tucker is Charles William and Florence Haddock, young girl with bow in her hair in front of the door opening probably Minnie Haddock (later married Jeff Thompson) Behind her the couple may be Nancy Ellen Haddock with husband Robert Walters.

The young couple behind by the corner of the house, the girls look like the Haddock girls so this couple could be Martha Mae Haddock who married George Elbridge Linebarger; between Rance and Sarah in the front row, (is probably Carrie Eldona Haddock who married Clark Cornell).

Darla thinks that on the end on far left is probably James Luther Haddock and his wife Ollie Catherine Wallen. And not in picture possibly could be Alonzo Haddock who married Maudie Carroll. She also stated that by the early 1900's Mary, an infant, and John Henry Haddock had already died. At this year's Haddock Reunion Ruth and Nadine (Minnie's daughters) said John Henry Haddock was buried in the Old Haddock Cemetery not too far from where Rance and Sarah Haddock once lived. And Darla also said that it is probable that the old house above was located on what is now Farm Road 1180.

Joy Guentert, Haddock descendant, stated that our new date is correct, the 3 children with Charles and Nora Haddock Tucker would be Raymond Tucker born 1900, Ella Tucker Wardlaw, (1902) Ruth's mother and the baby would her dad, Richard (Dick) Ransom Tucker (1904).

It was confirmed by Dane Martin, descendant of Charles and Florence (Moore) Haddock, that is indeed Charles and Florence, 2d couple from the right. The children in front of them are: Ellen "Ferne" Haddock b. 1899 and Roland Ransom Haddock b 1901.

Florence is holding a baby and that would have been James Arthur Haddock who was born March 30, 1904.

Man on left is Rance Haddock - other man may be Jim Browning
