The Thomas Jefferson Haddock Family

John Haddock, son of Admiral Haddock, was born in 1789 in North Carolina. He married Rhody Pott there and they had 15 children. In 1820 the John Haddock family moved to Dubois County, Indiana. It was here that one of their sons, Whiteside Haddock, married Jane Harbison, said to be of Cherokee Indian parentage. Whiteside and Jane settled near Vincennes, Indiana, and all of their five children were born here. In 1844 their second child, Thomas Jefferson Haddock was born. When Thomas was four years old his father died of injuries received in a fight. Whiteside was very strong and considered a great fighter. He was excellent at the art of rough and tumble, and never lost a fight. At the age of 36 he fought with an opponent and it required great effort, but he won. A couple of days later he died from the injuries he received in that fight.

Whiteside's son, Thomas J. Haddock was 17 and living in Indiana when the Civil War began in 1861. At this young age he volunteered to fight for the North and served four years as a private (Co. K, 58th Reg't., Indiana Infantry, Union Army). His service years were Dec. 1861 to Dec. 1865. He fought as a rifleman at Murfreesboro and Chicamauga and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. In the battle at Chicamauga in Georgia he was wounded by a rifleman's bullet to his right leg. He was captured by the South at this time and given back to the North. He was then sent home to recover. After some time at home to recover from his wound, Thomas went back to Tennessee to spend his third year of the war as a wagon driver who brought supplies and equipment where needed. He then participated in Sherman's March to the Sea until the war ended. The injury to his leg somewhat crippled him the rest of his life.

After the war Thomas, with his brother Clay and sister Octavia, moved to Wayne County, Missouri in order to homestead there. In 1867 Thomas settled down near Lowndes in Wayne County. He built his home and farmed on his land. In 1876 he married Nancy Elizabeth Dennis, who was one-half Cherokee descendant. All of his ten children were born and raised on his farm near Lowndes. Thomas J. Haddock died in 1911 at the age of 67. His wife Nancy lived on at their farm until she passed away in 1926 at the age of 70. Both are buried in the old Corinth Cemetery in Lowndes. On his tombstone are the battles he fought in during the Civil war.
