If pictured above is John Dake Long as family has stated then this photo was taken before 1867 and George Long was less than 20 years old. I've put a question mark by John Dake Long and Leonard until a date can be established for the photo. All the other people in the photo seem to match with other photos we have of them. Lavina married married only once because no other record of marriage for her was located for her and her tombstone reads Lavina Long. This photo looks to have been made in or about 1880 or so according to the ages of the children, etc.

Goodspeed's History of Southwest Missouri, Barry County

Published1888, page 1084

"Simeon H. Long, a farmer and a stock raiser of Barry County, MO., was born in Greene County, Indiana., in 1820, and is the second child of Hiram and Anna (Lakey) Long. Hiram Long was born in East Tennessee on May 20, 1796, and was reared on a farm. He emigrated from his native State to Indiana, and was there married on February 11, 1814. His wife was born in Ohio on March 19, 1798. They became the parents of eleven children, four of whom are living. Hiram Long came with his family to Missouri in 1834, locating in Ripley County. He afterward removed to Barry County, where he was brutally murdered in 1862. During the Civil War he tried hard to remain with his family in peace, taking no part then in the contest between the North and South. A band of Southern men came to his home and made inquiry as to his principles. Upon finding him a Union man they took him and one of his sons out and shot them. After the murder of his father and brother, Simeon H. Long enlisted in the Federal army, joining the Eighth Missouri Cavalry, with which he served three years, being mustered out of service at Little Rock, AR, on July 20, 1865. He was paid off at St. Louis the following August. On September 25, 1842, he was united in marriage with Tabitha James, who was born in Indiana on March 15, 1826. Eleven children have been born to them, seven of whom, Serilda J., Eliza, George W., Franklin H., Samantha C. (Mrs. James Burtchett), U. S. G. and Dora, are living. Their eldest son, S. J. Long, served in the Civil War in the Civil War in the same company with his father. He died in the hospital at Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., MO, from sickness contracted while in the service. After the war Mr. Long returned to the remainder of his family, whom he had left for security at Springfield, MO, and in February, 1866, came to Barry County, where he has since been engaged in farming. He and wife are consistent members of the Christian Church, and the family are highly respected. His is a Republican, and a member of the G. A. R."

The older couple is my great great grandparents George and Sarah Frances (Smith) Long; my gr grandmother, Melvina Caroline "Carrie" (Long) Addington (was later married to a Smith from a different Smith family than her mother's Smiths.); and the young girl is my grandmother, Gertrude Addington Haddock and she is holding her first child Della Haddock who was my dad's sister.  George Long is the son of John Dake and Lavina (Bellah) Long.  And Sarah Frances Smith Long is the dt. of Giles\Jiles and Sarah Frances (Singleton) Smith.

George Long was called "Old Wig".

Sometime during the Civil War George Long had two fingers missing. Opal McClure, George's granddaughter, said she remembered hearing that George was a water boy during the war. She indicated that he was carrying a bucket of water to a fellow solider when someone shot the bucket out of his hand.
His military records list him as 5 foot 2 1/2 inches tall.

George Long and Sarah Francis Smith were married in Barry County, MO, by Rev. John Hudson, 11 Nov 1869. They are buried at Corsicana Cemetery, near Purdy, Barry County, Missouri. After George's death, on the papers for the VA Mrs. Dove Shands stated that George Long lived at her home at the time of his death in Pierce City, Missouri.

Cause of Death:

Trained at Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Callaway Funeral Home Records state that George Long was born in Purdy, MO, and that his funeral was 4 Feb 1927. The place of death Pierce City, MO agrees with his military records. The funeral services were at the funeral home 2:30 p.m.., death 1 Feb 1927, and the cause of death was stated as chronic valvular? heart, age 78 years, 1 month, 21 days. Married, and buried Corsicana Cemetery, Barry Co. Born 10 Dec 1848,
father was given as  John Long and and his mother was given as Lavinia Beller [sic].

Hiram Long along with one of his sons was murdered by bushwhackers, his and Anna's presumed burial place is at Maddy Cemetery in Barry Co., MO. The son that is thought to have been murdered at the same time as Hiram is John Dake Long. The photo of him given above would then have been taken before the Civil War, if that is factual data.

On April 21, 1852, she was awarded 80 acres of Land but subsequently additional bounty was granted to soldiers by congress so she returned her bounty certificate with a claim of additional land which was awarded to her in 1855 for a total of 160 acres.

To a son, William, he gives a gun and to his sons, Joseph and James each a horse. The executors were his widow and a brother, James Smith. More Notes

In 1785 tax lists of Fauquier County, VA, stated that there was indeed a James Smith living in the county and even a John Duncomb lived there as well as a John Duncum. All paid their tithables to the county and for that tax year.

Interesting enough, a man named John Singleton was living in Fauquier County, VA. And at the end of the Revolutionary War, the Lee family was also located in the same county. This is believed to be the same Lee family that traveled to Tennessee with the Smiths and then on to Barry County, MO, in the same party. There were a number of people that left Rhea County about the same time, from the study of Rhea County families in Barry County, MO, the number might possibly be totaling 15 families or more. Those of the Smith party that made the trip to Missouri were the widow and the children of Charles Smith, son of the James Smith listed in the marriage records of Fauquier County, VA.  That record reads: Smith, James and Duncomb, Jaly, Oct 25, 1789. Perhaps this is July Duncomb and not really Jaly as we researchers have posted the name and recorded.

In 1800 Federal Census of Union District, South Carolina, James Smith is listed with two males under 10, one male 16 to 26, one female under 10 and one female 10 to 26. On the same Federal Census there is another James Smith who had one male under 10, one male 10 - 26 and 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16 and 1 female 26 - 45. And there is yet another James Smith of that county and that year. He had 3 males under 10, 1 male 26 - 45, and 40 slaves.

Then in 1810 there are 4 James Smith households. The James Smith removal from South Carolina occurred in the early or mid part of 1819. After James Smith arrived in Rhea County, TN, he leased or rented a farm from John Cosby. That farm was located what was then the Tennessee River. On Sept 19, 1819, a marriage record for Polly George to James Smith was located. John Cozby, Justice of the Peace solemnized the occurrence. Since James had not divorced his first wife and was legally still married to her, new problems were brewing and already in the making. In 1819 a tax list was located and it listed James Smith with one white poll and with 130 acres.

In 1830, Rhea County, TN, James Smith reported to the Federal Census taker that he had a daughter who was 5 -10 years old and James claims he is 40 to 50 as well as his wife claims that is her age also.

On 29 Sept 1838, James Smith acquired 50 acres of land by deed of conveyance from Richard and Blackstone Waterhouse.

County of Rhea, State of Tennessee. 50 acres more or less, beginning at two hickories on the line of Charles McClung said 5000 acre tract north one hundred poles to corner of said Bolen's 41 acres tract with his line east eighty poles to the beginning with all and singular and hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and all the estate right, title interest property claimant demand of them the said Richard Waterhouse and Blackstone Waterhouse, Executors of Richard G. Waterhouse, deceased, their heirs and assigns, forever under the law of equity to have and to hold the said 50 acres with its appurtenances unto the said James Smith, his heirs and assigns forever hereby warranting the same against the legal title, claim and demand of all and every person whatsoever as an indefeasible estate in fee simple. In testimony set our hands the 29 Sept 1838.
Richard Waterhouse.

Blackstone Waterhouse, by his attorney in fact, Richard Waterhosue, Executors of R.G. Waterhouse
Witnessed by Daniel Waterhouse and N. G. Frazier.

This is the property that led to many long legal disputes and the controversy of property in 1843 battle of James Smith's estate. In 1837 Jaly - July - died back in South Carolina and sons John and William Smith were still in Union County, South Carolina.

Charles Smith, born around 1800, and a son of James Smith was born in South Carolina was married there about 1817. Giles, his son was born about 1819 there in Union Co. Some researchers think James Smith is buried at Wolfe Creek Cemetery, Rhea County, TN.

After the death of James Smith, John W. Hughes acquired the possession of the 50 acres of land that James had bought back in 1838.

Rebecca Smith Covington and her husband Andrew J. Covington stated an ejection suit to obtain the land as she believed she was a legal heir to the property. The suit went on for a number of years and many depositions and other legal papers were located in Rhea County concerning this 50 acres of land. James' sons filed some legal depositions. The sons who by his first wife, William and John Smith. And his daughter-in-law, Nancy (Jacobs) Smith, widow of Charles Smith, made some. The other names located in the county deposition records are: John Singleton William Sullivan, William John, Isaac Benson, William B. Cozby, William Lee, and other Smith kinsmen. These names will be recognized as Smith relatives that are in the legal papers.

In 1853 on 12 January, William and John Smith made their depositions in Union District, SC. Located within these legal papers was valuable genealogy data. One of the sons states that his father was born in Farquier County, VA, and the other reported that he was married to Jaly Duncomb. That one claimed his mother was named Jaly Duncomb Smith and that she had died in 1837.

And from this legal account it appeared that Jaly was not July or Judy, but it isn't certainly is possible that in certain hand writing a closed "u" might appear to be look like "a". It is something to look for and to document if at all possible a correct spelling of her name.

In a legal document, Hughes notified the Covingtons that he was taking depositions in Union County, SC, on Jan 12, 1853 from William and John Smith and those would be taken at the residence of Horace Lee. (And by the way, that's a name to remember when researching Barry County, MO.) Elizabeth and Sarah Hollingsworth on Jan 16, 1853 gave depositions as well as Elizabeth Hogan who also gave her deposition.

Horace Lee, the Justice of the Peace made a legal deposition and somewhere within the documents his name was recorded as Horris Lee.

In Meigs County, TN, a county adjoining Rhea County, William Sulliam states that he is about 65 years old. He claims he was born in SC and had lived here until about 1811 or 1812, when he moved to Roane County, TN. He'd lived there about 3 or 4 years and then went back to SC, where he married on Jan 6, 1816. He stated that any court or clerk did not marry him and that no legal document was filed that so stated he was married on that date. He went to say that he didn't think any legal license was made of the marriage. He stated that he personally knew James Smith, who is said to be the father of Rebecca Covington and was well acquainted with the family. " I heard talk frequently about his first wife and heard him say he was married to her at about the age of 16 or 17 and that she was a women with two children." He added that he did not recollect when he had heard this information, but that it was between 1823 and the time that James died. He also stated that he did not recollect if he said she was still alive at the time that he had talked about her. Smith sat that he had left hit wife in South Carolina for certain causes. He was asked if James Smith was fond of joking and Sullivan replied that yes he was and the he spoke of his wife in South Carolina but was not joking at the time.

Sullivan said that conversation was on one occasion and took place near the ferry on the farm that had belonged to Mr. Cozby. Sullivan went on to state that James Smith had lived in Rhea County but since the county line had changed a part was cut off to Meigs County so that Sullivan then at that time lived in Meigs. But that he lived where he had always lived and had not moved. Signed: William Sullivan, Oct 22, 1853. Meigs County, Tennessee

In another deposition given by William Cozby and Col. Isaac Benson of Hamilton County, TN, it is learned that these two men had known James Smith 15 to 20 years. Cozby stated he'd known James Smith since he was a small boy and up to the time he died. James Smith was a tenant of Cosby's father when he first came to Tennessee. He remembered Polly George and knows that James had married her about 1819 or 1820. He stated that he'd had a conversation with Smith and James had told him that he was worried that his first wife would come to Tennessee and prosecute for marrying his second wife without getting a divorce from her. He claimed that Smith's sons had come to Tennessee to live near him. He said that Smith had told him that he was raised in Virginia and that when about grown he married Jaly Duncomb. He later moved to Rhea County, TN.

Another deposition was located, one made by Nancy Smith, Rhea County, TN, 22 Oct 1856. She was the widow of Charles Smith, son of James Smith, she said. She said she was formerly Nancy Jacobs and was born in Virginia in 1797 and that she married Chares Smith about 1816 or 1817 and she believed that was in what was then Union County, SC.

Lewis Smith Dead: Lewis Smith, more familiarly know as "Uncle Lewis" died at the residence of his son, A. C. Smith in Marionville at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct 20, 1911. He was born in Rhea County, Tenn., in 1830 and moved to Missouri in 1850, was married Sarah M. Fly, July 1, 1855, to which union was born four sons and four daughters. Four sons and two still survive him.

He was converted and joined the M. E. Church when about 36 years of age. He remained loyal to the church of his choice and raised his children to be Christian noble men and women.

His wife died Feb 13, 1902, and he was later married to Mrs. L. M. Brisco of Exeter, MO, who remained a faithful campaign during the remainder of his life.

In the early part of May he and wife started on a visit to his children at Vernon, Marionville, and Springfield. And on the return trip while at Logan he got out of his buggy and was attempting to find water for his horse, which became frightened at an approaching train, and in his attempt to hold the horse, was jerked violently to the ground breaking his right leg at the joint. He was taken to this son's in Marionville, and after his leg was set was cared for by a special nurse, during a period of four weeks. His daughter, Mrs. R. A. Johnson, then moved to Marionville to take care of her aged father. Remaining faithful and with true devotion administering to this wants for about 19 weeks at which time he was relieved by death.

His children knew death was near and was expected at any time. When in bed a few weeks he was thought to be improving, and would soon be out again, but instead, he began growing weaker and weaker.

He would have been 81 year old at his next birthday, Dec. 26.

Two of is children Charles and Albin live near Springfield, Calvin at LeGrande, Oregon, Asher at Verona, Mrs. R. A. Johnson at Marionville, Mrs. Letha White at Rickfield, Kansas., and all were by his dying bed that could possibly get here. Calvin and Letha living so far away could not be present.

It was very said and tearful hearts that he was laid to rest at Mt. Pisqah Cemetery, 32 1/2 miles south of Monett Saturday, Oct 21, 199.

Funeral service were conducted by Revs. Simmons and Yeager of Marionville.

[Research Note: Asher Coleman Smith married Melvia Carolina "Carrie" Long and they are buried at King's Prairie Cemetery.  Carrie first married Bertie L. Addington, who she divorced Oct of 1900, then sometime before 1910 she married George Thomas, and then Asher C. Smith sometime after 1928. I don't have a date for the Smith marriage. Asher Coleman Smith was married to Marinda Rogers Ray, Dec 13, 1890 and she died in or around 1914.

Lewis Smith was a son of Charles and Nancy (Jacobs) Smith and was a brother of Giles Ira Smith, grandfather of the above mentioned Carrie Long. Lewis Smith's siblings were Giles Ira Smith who married Sarah Frances Singleton, Mary Sands and Mary Jane Winningham. He died in McMillion, Oklahoma; Caroline Coleman Smith who married William Wheeler Lee; Horace Smith who married Martha Williams; Charles Dunkhard Smith who married Hannah Caroline Casey; and William S. who married Elizabeth Bandy.

Lewis Smith's wife Sarah Melvina Fly was the daughter of William Asher Fly and his wife Nicea Sooter.]
