HADFIELD
– BDMs – England and Wales:
1.
Civil registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDMs) in
England and Wales commenced in the September quarter of 1837. Although compulsory by law to register, it
was not until 1875 that it was strictly enforced.
2.
The General Register Office (GRO) BDMs are recorded and collated
by year and quarter, e.g. 1875 September quarter will contain all those
registrations for July, August and September 1875.
3.
The HADFIELD BDMs listed here have been copied from the GRO BDM
microfiche indices. The fields that do
not contain information are as a consequence of those GRO microfiche records
sighted being illegible.

Tips for GRO indices:
1.
Once the correct BIRTH entry has been located, check the
entire quarter for an identical reference as this may indicate a multiple
birth. Multiple births are indicated
with an asterisk or other symbol.
2.
Once the correct DEATH entry has been located, check the
entire quarter for an identical reference as this may indicate one of the
following:
a.
simultaneous sibling deaths during a multiple birth (there are many);
b.
simultaneous deaths of both mother and child(ren) during
childbirth;
c.
simultaneous sibling deaths due to natural causes, accident,
criminal act or execution; and
d.
simultaneous deaths of members of the same family at the same
time and place.
3.
Both spouses will have identical MARRIAGE references
listed under their respective surnames.
Identical references will also occur in the rare instance where two or
more HADFIELD marriages are recorded in the same year, quarter, volume and page
(four entries to a page). Siblings being married at the same time and
place may also have identical references.
Note that there are also instances where a HADFIELD married a HADFIELD.
4.
Registration of a BDM may
not necessarily have taken place in the same quarter or year as the
event. The Registrar recording multiple
births, deaths or marriages may or may not have recorded each person
with identical references.
5.
With many HADFIELD families having personal evidence of BDMs
being registered displaying the surname HATFIELD, it is worth examining the GRO
BDMs for that surname as well. A
hundred or so years ago, many family members were illiterate and as Registrars
tended to write what they heard, the person registering the BDM was therefore
not able to check the accuracy of what had been recorded.
