Grace and Ed enjoyed the outdoors in their free time and were avid mountain climbers in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. In 1936, they helped found the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, an organization for individuals who have reached the summit of all 46 peaks in the Adirondack Range of 4,000 feet or higher in elevation. Ed was member number 6 and Grace was member number 9. Their grand-niece, Martha De Larm, became member number 3803 on 10/8/1995. There are over 5700 members today. Grace was the club historian for more than 60 years and maintained personal correspondence with each climber, writing thousands of letters to aspiring 46ers. Her correspondence is now permanently housed in the New York State Archives.

Ed arrived at the Port of New York on October 10, 1911, having sailed on the SS Rotterdam with his mother and older brother, Baleslaw (later known as Ben). The record lists them as being of Polish nationality, with their birth place listed as Siabassin, Russia. Ed's father, Jan, had immigrated in 1907 and lived at 118 6th Ave., Paterson, NJ.

Ed graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1927 with a degree in electrical engineering. In January 1928 he was hired as an electrical draftsman in the New York State Department of Architecture. He advanced through the civil service ranks to the position of superintendent of operations and maintenance of canals and waterways in the Department of Public Works. He held this position from 1953 through his retirement in 1966. More about Ed can be found at the NY State Library Special Collection.
