According to family lore, William was born in Burke, Franklin Co., NY. It is said he "went west" as a young man to work on the Union Pacific RR and may have been present when the "Golden Spike" was driven in 1869. He is most likely the William Lewis, age 35, listed as a miner in the 1880 Federal Census for Hague, Warren Co., NY.

Sophia was born in Hague, Warren Co., NY. She married Edson Pratt, as his second wife, on August 28, 1920.William married Sophia on October 19, 1885. They are buried in the Hague Cemetery. They had 3 children:

Andrew and Gertrude were married January 7, 1914 in West Hague, Warren Co., NY. They had one son of their own and raised the daughter of Gertrude's sister, Leola, who died shortly after childbirth.
Andrew, Gertrude, and Leola are buried in the Valley View Cemetery, Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY.
