William graduated from the Troy Business College on February 13th 1885. He is in the center of the back row of the class picture. His framed diploma was proudly displayed on the wall of the formal dining dining room in the Hague, NY farmhouse. It now is displayed over the fireplace at the De Larm residence in Tampa FL.

Hannah's father died when she was 3 and her mother died about three years later leaving her in the care of her grandparents,
John Jenkins and Hannah Balcom. Hannah was adopted by John Wheeler and his wife, Betsy J Bowen, prior to the 1875 NY Census. John Wheeler operated the Wheeler House (aka: Trout House) until his death in 1885. His son, Charles H. Wheeler operated the hotel until R.J. Bolton (a nephew of Charles' wife, Ella Waters). Hannah worked in the Wheeler House until she married William.
During the Victorian Era, well behaved school children were rewarded for good behavior with a small piece of paper called a Reward of Merit.
Hannah received this one from her teacher, Alice A. Rising. This card dates from the early 1870's (Hannah probably started school during the 1870-1871 school year and Alice died May 23, 1875).
William received this one from his teacher, Helen A. O'Brian. (Most likely from the same time frame as above or a little earlier).
When visiting friends, or "making calls," people would leave a card at the front door or parlor, even if the person they were visiting was home. They were used as a reminder about who had visited recently and deserved a visit in turn. Sometimes a loving greeting was added, though the card alone was considered a message. Here are a few embossed cards from the family collection for Hannah before she was married:
The records for School District #3 in the town of Hague indicate William was the teacher for 1888, 1889, 1891, and 1893. (From the notes of Clifton West, Town Historian.)
William inherited a share of his father's dairy farm in Hague, NY and purchased the remainder from his siblings. He purchased adjacent acreage from Curtis Balcom in 1910 and Byron Doolittle in 1913. William ran a very successful farming operation and around 1930 left the farm in the care of his son, Rollin. William then moved to Putnam, NY to help his son, John, establish his farm. In 1937 he sold the Hague farm to Rollin.
