HALL Surname DNA Project Background

The HALL DNA Project welcomes all Hall family members and others with Y-DNA matching Hall Family Members as participants. We encourage you to join today!

Our project now has over 275 members, mostly currently in the United States, Ireland, or the United Kingdom; however, we do encourage Halls from anywhere to participate. We are making exciting discoveries from almost every member who joins the project.

Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your research of your family tree. We will also discover which family trees are related. As the project progresses, the results for the various family trees will provide information on the evolution of the surname.

The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a HALL in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree.

The primary scope of the project is based on testing Y-DNA for uncovering your Hall surname genealogy. This is both the now well-known Y-DNA STR testing and the Deep Clade (SNP) test to precisely determine your Y-DNA Haplogroup.

We do encourage our members to do other DNA testing, such as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and autosomal DNA (FamilyFinder); however, we will not be actively supporting those results based on lack of resources. We can give you some guidance on those tests if you have questions.

IMPORTANT PROJECT DETAILS:

The Project Administrators are VOLUNTEERS who are interested in Hall genealogy and in using DNA to help solve genealogy problems. The only benefit we derive from our service is the satisfaction that we have helped provide an infrastructure by which you might extend your genealogy. We do not work for FamilyTreeDNA and have no special access or control over their operations.

When you need to email the Project Administrators, please use the email address [email protected]. This email address will get you a response more rapidly as the email is forwarded to all of the administrators. We are the right persons to ask first if you have Project or DNA related questions.

The HALL Surname DNA project uses the RootsWeb HALL Surname email list as our communication tool for project's status and updates. We encourage all members to subscribe to this list. The Project Administrators monitor this email list. Subscribe to Hall Email List.

When you have questions about Hall genealogy, please use the RootsWeb Hall Surname email list to ask questions. That list has hundreds of subscribers, and someone on the list might be able to help. You can also post a message on the RootsWeb.com Hall Surname Message Board. The Project Administrators are NOT experts on the genealogy of all Hall families. We each have Hall families we have researched, but there are just too many Hall families for you to expect that we can help with yours.

We encourage males who order a Y-DNA test to order 37 or 67 markers. Our experience is that we cannot assign a DNA result (called a Kit) to a Family with fewer than 37 markers being tested, without a compelling paper trail that connects the kit to another kit in the family.

The previous project web site is no longer being maintained. The Project and DNA results are being published on the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) Hall Surname Project Public Web Site - http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hall/default.aspx.

This site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~halldna/ and is in the process of being re-built. It will no longer maintain the DNA results for the project, but it will store the genealogies associated with the kits. The process of building this site will be a long process, and anyone who can help should contact the Project Administrators.

We are looking for individuals to join the project as Family Coordinators. Family Coordinators will become the Genealogy contacts for a specific Project Families, supporting potential members and the existing members on the family genealogy.
