Alfred F. Hanks, 79 years of age, died Sunday evening at 7:30 at his home on South Second West Street following a three months' illness. He is the father of Alfred L. Hanks, president of Tooele stake.
Mr. Hanks was born at Nailsworth, Horsley, England, March 7, 1856. He came to Utah in 1869 by train to Ogden. He first settled in Fillmore, Millard county. He was a farmer and stock-raiser by occupation.
He married Jan. 24, 1878 to Ellen Taylor Lyman, daughter of the late Elder Francis M. Lyman, of the council of the Twelve. To this union Stanley Hanks. [Ellen Lyman Hanks died 1881].
He was married Jan. 9, 1882 to Elisabeth Pocock , to this union 11 children were born, eight of whom survive.
Mr. Hanks was a high priest of record in Tooele South Ward and served as a counselor in the Elder's Quorum. He has resided here for the past 57 years, having come here in 1878.
He is survived by the following: Pres. Alfred L. Hanks, C. Arthur Hanks,
Mrs. Elsie Curry, G. Marion Hanks, all of Tooele, Mrs. Nellie Powell, Salt Lake, Mrs. Emma Goodwin, Park City; Mrs. Alice Hawkins, Salt Lake; Theodore and Mrs. Marcella Fiddler, Tooele; also 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

EUREKA, Utah --
Arthur Frances [Edward] Hanks, 74, died Tuesday in a Payson hospital during an illness.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Alma Dryborough, Eureka, and a brother, Bert Hanks, Rawlins, Wyo.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Eureka Methodist Church by the Rev. William Frary and Eureka Masonic lodge No. 9.

Charles E. Hanks, Sr., 86, a pioneer resident of Utah and Idaho, died early Wednesday at his home in Salem of causes incident to age.
Mr. Hanks was born January 24, 1855, in Horsley, [Gloucestershire] England, a son of John and Marie Reynolds Hanks. He came to Uah with the Harvey J. Cluff emigrants, leaving England June 22, 1868, and arriving in New York August 5, 1868. He raised cattle in Utah and Idaho and hauled ore for a number of years in the Tintic mining district. After that he engaged in farming while living in Payson and Salem.
He married Axeleana Hermann in Blackfoot, Idaho, April 28, 1879. She died February 4, 1889, at Eureka. He married Emma Curtis September 21, 1889.
Surviving are two sons, Charles E. Hanks, Jr. and Roscoe Hanks of Salem; a daughter, Mrs. Rosa Taylor of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Edward J. Hanks of Salem: nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Salem LDS ward chapel, with Bishop Elmer Sabin in charge.

WWI Veteran. Member of the

Served a Midwestern States Mission.
Survivors: wife; son, Douglas, Jr.; daughters: La Fonda Grover; Pauline Christiansen; Marriner Carion; 18 grandchildren; two great-grand children.
Funeral Saturday noon.

Edward Hanks [68], who for the past 27 years has made his home in Eureka, died Sunday morning. His death followed a rather lengthy illness from heart trouble and dropsy.
The deceased was born at Gloucestershire, England, July 3, 1846. Mr. Hanks came to America with his parents about 30 years ago.
They lived in New York state for a short time and then made the trip to Utah, first locating at Salem.
The parents of Edward Hanks died at Salem and four of his brothers are now making their homes at that place.
During the 27 years the deceased made his home in Eureka he was employed by the Eureka-Hill and Gemini mining companies remaining with the latter campany until a month or two before his death.
He leaves a wife [Hannah] and six children, three sons and three daughters. The children are: Mrs. Jno. Morley, Mrs. Herbert Hopes, Mrs. John Pope, Arthur Hanks, Bert Hanks, and Percy Hanks.
Funeral services were held at the L.D.S. church today.
The remains will be shipped to
Salem City Cemetery, [Utah] for burial.

SALEM, Utah
Edward James Hanks, 85, a resident of Salem for the past 77 years and a well known farmer, stockraiser and church worker, died at his home here at 3:30 Monday from ailments incident to advance age.
He was born in Horsley, England, July 18, 1859, a son of John and Maria Reynolds Hanks. The family were converts to the LDS faith and immigrated to Uah, crossing the ocean in a slow moving sailing vessel, The Constitution, in 1867 when Edward was 10 years of age.
The family moved directly to Salem, which became their permanent home The youngest of 13 children, all Mr. Hanks' brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He was a very successful farmer and livestock raiser. One of the bright spots in his life was witnessing the driving of the Golden Spide at Promontory point.
Mr. Hanks was active in all branches of the LDS church. He organized and conducted the Salem band and was a member for 30 years. He was the last surviving member of the band. He taught a Sunday school class for 25 years and he was a high priest at the time of his death.
He married Mary Janet Underwood in Manti in August, 1886, and two years later in the Manti temple. She died Sept. 15, 1943, and his health had failed rapidly since that time.
He is survived by the following sons and daughters: John E. Hanks and Herbert T. Hanks, Salt Lake City; Lee Hanks, Los Angeles, California; Lynn, Melvin, Elmer Hanks and Mrs. Ruth Carson, Salem; Mrs. Pearl Halvorsen, Glendale, Cal., 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Salem LDS ward chapel by Clarence Sheen, bishop.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday at the Claudin Funeral home in Spanish Fork and Friday until time of services at the family home at Salem.
Burial will be in the
Salem City Cemetery under the direction of Claudin Funeral home.

Elizabeth Edwards HANKS ; Utah; Parowan Times; Jan 04 1928
Another sad parting for the people of this county, came last week when Mrs. Elizabeth Hanks of Paragonah, prominent woman of that community since 1865, passed from this life on Dec. 28th in Salt Lake City where she was living temporarily. She was brought home for burial.
Funeral services were held at Paragonah Dec. 31., and she was buried beside her husband in the family plot in Parowan Cemetery.
Elizabeth Edwards Hanks was born in Dec. 1st, 1849 in Myrther Tydville, South Wales.
At the age of fourteen she emmigrated to Utah in company with her widowed mother Sarah Edwards, three brothers, Edward, William and David all of whom have preceded her in death and one sister Sarah Ann Robb who is now living in St. Antony, Idaho.
She walked the entire distance across the plains arriving in Salt Lake City in October 1864. With the family she came immediately to Paragonah and was married one year later to George W. Hanks. She lived at the present family residence sixty-two years. To this union were born eight children, three having preceeded her from this life. The living children are George E. Hanks of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. W. H. Barton of Paragonah, Utah; Heber T. Hanks of Los Angeles, Calif.; Wm. D. Hanks of La Grande, Oregon and John S. Hanks of Salt Lake City.
She was president of the Primary association of the Paragonah Ward for fourteen years. For the past few years she has spent each winter with one or another of her sons, having passed away Dec. 28, 1927 at the home of John S. Hanks in Salt Lake City.

Monday morning, February 21, 1927, Mrs. Elizabeth Hanks Curtis died at her home in Eden, death being due principally to old age. The deceased was born in Gloucestershire, England, April 15, 1852, and at the time of her death was nearly 75 years of age. She joined the church of the Latter Day Saints when only a small girl and when about 17 years old left home and parents in England and with a company of 900 Latter Day Saints came to the United States in 1869. The company landed in New York and she pioneered her way thru to Utah, enduring many hardships for the sake of the gospel in which she believed.
While in Utah she met Moses Curtis and was married to him January 11, 1870. They lived in Utah until the year 1871, when she and her husband, with other members of the church were called to settle the little town of Brigham City, Arizona, where she did her part in building up the community. While there her son James aged 7 years, was drowned in the Little Colorado River.
In 1881, she and her husband and family, pioneered their way to Graham county and stopped in the town now known as Graham. Then later her family with others moved on down the river to a little settlement called Curtis (now Eden), and spent the remainder of her days there, raising her children through many hardships and trials. Her life was spent in service to others and she helped hundreds of other mothers living from one end of the valley to the other, in sickness of all kinds, often risking her own life in crossing the Gila river, made dangerous by high waters, for the sake of relief to others. She was a faithful worker in the church until her death.
Elizabeth Hanks was the mother of eight children, three boys who are dead, and five girls who are Mrs. Erastus Hancock of Eden, Mrs. I. James Palmer of Thatcher, Mrs. Emanuel Palmer of Miami, Mrs. D. 0. Colvin of Phoenix and Mrs. Alfred Plumb of Eden. All were at her bedside except Mrs. Colvin, as it was impossible for her to get there before the end came. The deceased also leaves 36 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held [22 Feb 1927] in the L. D. S. Church at Eden, Tuesday, with Bishop Thos. F. Fuller presiding.
The speakers were Elijah Hancock, Mrs. Martha Tryon, Anthon Christensen, President Spencer Kimball and President H. L. Payne. All of the speakers spoke of the great mission the deceased had fulfilled in life and the good she had done to humanity. The musical selection by the choir included the hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour.” “I Have Read of a Beautiful City,” was sung by Mrs. Alice Nelson and Mrs. Lottie E. Fuller and President Payne sang as a solo “Have I Done Any Good in This World Today.” The invocation was offered by Isaac Palmer.

Emanuel Hanks, 86, Clearfield, [Utah], died Monday [25 August 1947] of causes incident to age.
He was born 15 May, 1861, in England, a son of William and Sarah Clissold Hanks.
He came to the United States in 1881 and settled in Bountiful [Utah].
He married Maraldia Willey August 26, 1885 in the Logan Temple.
Survivors includes his widow; sons: Douglas J. Hanks, Austin [Emanuel] Hanks, Augustin L. Hanks; daughters: Arlean Hanks Olson, Sarah Hanks Wilcox, Gladys Hanks Simpson, and Phyllis Hanks King. 48 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

Francis Ambrose Hanks, 79, a member of the Palmyra State High Council and prominent as a Church and civic worker of this community, died at home Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. apparently from a heart attack.
He was born in Gloucestershire, England, Jan. 24, 1861, a son of
George and [Eliza] Jane Davis Hanks. The family came to Utah in 1870 and moved directly to Salem where he has spent the rest of his life, with the exception of time spent in the mission field.
He married Matilda Sheen, Jan. 19, 1882, in the Salt Lake Endowment House.
He has been a high councilman since 1922, three years from 1922 to 1924, in the Nebo Stake when the Salem Word belonged to that state and since that time in the Palmyra Stake when the division was make in 1924. Before that time he was in the ward bishopric for 12 years from 1900 to 1912. He has served in every executive position in the ward M. I. A. and has served on five missions, three of them here at home and two abroad, in the Eastern and North-western States Missions.
He is survied by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Zenettie Beddoes, Mrs. Othelia Taylor, Mrs. Louise Taylor, David A., Heber G., Joseph E., and Ernest C. Hanks, all of Salem and Mrs. Matilda Haskell of Payson, also 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Salem Ward chapel under the direction of Bishop Ray Davis.
Interment will be in the
Salem City Cemetery, Utah.

George Hanks of Salem died at the family residence early Sunday Morning, following a lingering illness.
He was one of the oldest residents of Salem, having lived there for 68 years. He was also an Indian war veteran.
He was born in Glo[uce]stershire, England, April 12, 1844, the son of
George and Eliza Jane Davis Hanks.
Surviving are his son, William Hanks of Salem, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by the following brothers: Joseph, James and F. A. Hanks of Salem and Alfred Hanks of Tooele.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Salem ward chapel. Bishop Ray Davis will preside.
Interment will be in the
Salem City cemetery, [Utah] under direction of the Deseret Mortuary.

Joseph Hyrm Hanks, 83, a resident of Salem for the past 67 years, died here at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at the family home after a short illness from ailments incidnet to age. He had been able to do his work until one week ago.
He was born in Horsley, England, April 9, 1854, to
George and Eliza Jane Davis Hanks. The family emigrated to Salem in 1870 and made it their permanent home. He had lived here since. He married Almira F. [S.] Jackman in Salt Lake City, October 30, 1876.
He was a farmer and gardener until 1922, when he retired from active work, but still engaged in home gardening. He was always active in the LDS church work and was a high priest at the time of his death. He was a member of the Salem ward choir for many years and had always been active in auxiliaries of the church, serving as first counselor in the Young Men's Mutual Improvement association for many years. His wife died April 1, 1931.
He is survived by two sons, Charles E. Hanks, Spanish Fork: Harry Hanks, Denver, Colo.; five daughters, Miss Delina Hanks, Salem; Mrs. William Underwood, Thistle; Mrs. Bryan Gull, Spanish Fork; Mrs. Lon Safford and Mrs. William Hawkins, Provo; one brother, Francis Hanks, Salem: 40 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted by Bishop Ray Davis Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Salem school house.
Friends may call at the Claudin Funeral home at Spanish Fork until Saturday morning at 9 o'clock and prior to the services at the family home at Salem.

Maraldia Willey HANKS ; Utah; Salt Lake Tribune; 19 July 1950
Mrs. Maraldia Willey Hanks , 82, widow of Emanuel Hanks, Clearfield, died Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the family residence after an extended illness.
Mrs. Hanks was born Feb. 26, 1868, in Bountiful, a daughter of William W. and Nancy Tolman Willey.
She resided in Bountiful until 1900 when the family moved to Syracuse, Davis county, then moved to Clearfield in 1906.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Clearfield First ward, was active in Relief Society and for several years was a member of the Relief Society Stake Board of North Davis Stake. She had been a Relief Society teacher for 50 years and for 60 years was member of the church choir in various wards; in later years active in genealogical and temple work.
On Aug. 26, 1885, she was married to Mr. Hanks in Bountiful. He died in Salt Lake City Aug. 25, 1947.
Survivors are the following sons and daughters Austin E. and Agustin L. Hanks, Burley, Ida.; Douglas J. Hanks and Mrs. Melven H. (Arlene) Olson, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Paul (Sarah) Wilcox Heyburn, Ida.; Mrs. George V. (Gladys) Simpson, Ogden; Mrs. Florin B. (Phyllis) King, Clearfield.
50 grandchildren, 78 great-grand children and the following brothers and sisters: Wallace W. and Voscoe C. Willey, Bountiful; Dr. Roscoe C. Willey, Salt Lake City; Rudger C. Willey, Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Effie Holt, Burley; Mrs. R. H. (Alice) Barlow, Clearfield; Mrs. Catherine Pearson, Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Roy (Edna) Tribe, Ogden.

Mrs. Rebecca G. Hanks, 80, widow of William J. Hanks, died at her home, 75 North West Temple street, Thursday afternoon of infirmities incident to age. she had been ill for several years.
Mrs. Hanks was born in Salt Lake City, October 22, 1853, a daughter of Rebecca and James V. [Joseph A.] Thompson. She was married to William J. Hanks at Virginia City, Nev., in 1876, and for many years made her home in Wells, Nev. For the last 25 years she resided in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Hanks was a member of the First Presbyterian church.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter,
Will V. Hanks of Salt Lake City, Blaine A. Hanks of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Mrs. W. M. (Bess Hanks) Wootten of Los Angeles. Cal.

Mrs.
Sarah Ann Hanks Barton, 77, died at the Iron County Hospital in Cedar City Tuesday morning of causes incident to age.
Mrs. Barton was born at Paragonah [Utah], April 21, 1871, a daughter of George W. and Elizabeth Edwards Hanks. She lived in Paragonah all of her life.
She was married to William Henry Barton, Dec. 7, 1892 at Paragonah. They later went to the temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mrs. Barton is survived by her husband, a son Austin Barton and three daughters, Mrs. Elva McBride, Paragonah; Mrs. Alva Sheridan, San Francisco; Mrs. Gwen Burt, Salt Lake City; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, J. S. Hanks, Salt Lake City and W. D. Hanks, Portland, Oregon.
Funeral services are pending.

Sarah Clissold HANKS ; Utah; Davis County Clipper; 27 July 1900
Sarah Hanks, mother of
Emanuel Hanks, was so severely burned on the morning of the 24th that she died a few hours later.
She was reaching over the stove to get the stove hook when her clothing caught on fire. Both lids in front and the center piece were off the stove when she did it. Not much is known of how the accident a[o]ccurred as when the fire was put out she was only able to give a brief hint as to how it happened.
Her clothing was all on fire, when two ladies who were going along the sidewalk saw her emerge from the house. The alarm was given but there was no water handy and it was a few seconds before a bucket could be found. It happened to contain some water which was thrown on her. Then the people who had gathered hurriedly torn off what clothing remained on her. It was found that her body from the knees up was burned frightfully. Woolen hose had protected her feet. It being hot weather, she was clad mostly in cotton clothing which burned rapidly.
It was about 8:30 o'clock in the moring when it occurred and she died at a quarter to three in the afternoon. With all her pain she never gave a groan.
She resided in a house by herself very near to her son's house where she had lived for many years.
Deceased would have been eightly-four the 11th of August, and was born in England. Arrived in this country with her husband, the late William Hanks, the fall of 1881 and has since resided in Bountiful. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over fifty years.
Funeral services were held at the tabernacle, Thursday, at 2 p.m. There was a fair attendance.
She was the mother of ten children, seven living, five in England one in Australia and her son here.
She was an o[a]ccoucheuse and practised obstetrics extensively in England.

William V. Hanks, 57, of Salt Lake, died yesterday in a Provo hospital. [Age 3 in 1880 census ]
Mr. Hanks was born in Wells, Nev. He came to Salt Lake as a salesman for the National Cash Register Company, and later was employed by a local restaurant.
Surviving are a brother and a sister, Blaine Hanks of Boise, Idaho, and Mrs. William M. [Bess] Wooton of Los Angeles.

Willis Hanks, 51, of 5519 Anna street, died in his parked car Friday morning in the 5600 block of Overland road. Coroner Earl Alden said death was due to a heart attack. Alden said Mr. Hanks had returned to his car after eating breakfast in a nearby cafe. He apparently was stricken at the moment. He was discovered about 10 a.m. by a truck driver who pulled into the parking lot.
Mr. Hanks was born in Clearfield, Utah, on June 23, 1907. He served in the Corps of Engineers during World War II. He had come to Boise from Utah about 20 years ago. He was married to May Miller in Boise on Dec. 6, 1945.
Mr. Hanks had been a truck driver, employed by the John Bastida Construction company.
He is survived by his wife in Boise; his father, Austin E. Hanks of Burley; six brothers, Lloyd, Thead, Phillip, Lawrence, Edison and Dariel Hanks, all of Burley; Three sisters, Mrs. Maurine Stiens and Mrs. Lorraine Garrett, both of Burley, and Mrs. Eleanor Boone [Toone] of Carey.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the LDS Fifth Ward church Bishop Gordon Ray will officiate.
Interment will be at
Cloverdale Cemetery with Relyea chapel in charge of arrangements [Boise, Idaho, USA].
