Harmons of the Scarborough Branch

The Scarborough Maine Branch

Scarborough was the home of the branch of Harmons in America. It was here the
family grew to great numbers and spread all over New England and the western
states as far as California, and also in Canada. In Scarborough in 1800, it contained
25 families Harmons averaging eight members to a family. Not until 1790, did the Harmons
leave Scarborough and settle in other towns in large numbers. When Buxton housed six
families, Standish four, Machias one. Machias and vicinity in 1850, had 15 families. About
1849-50, a large number of families went west in search of gold. John Harmon, the first of
the Scarborough branch was probably born in 1650. Probably married in 1677 to Sarah Roberts, daughter of Wm. Roberts of Oyster River (now Durham, NH) near Dover, N. H. and in 1667
