This
area is just up a bit and to the right of the entrance. It contains
many difficult-to-read stones and many unmarked graves. Mary "Polly"
Graves (BRANDON) MONTGOMERY (2 Aug 1837 - 23 Aug 1916) is said to be buried here in an unmarked
grave. Mary was the wife of David Washington MONTGOMERY and mother of
Rachel and Lizzie MONTGOMERY. Rachel married - first - James F.M. "Jim" MAJORS and - second - Edwin H. KURTZ.

Henry
GILES (son of Judge W.M. and Cora GILES) and Vesta PASS are
buried in Section D - to the left of the main
road and not too far inside the cemetery gates. W.M.'s sister Dicy's
son Newton PATTERSON is buried adjacent to Henry. This is a view from
the
road that circles the top portion of the cemetery.

Giles Family Plot Overview |

|

The
large stone to the right is the large stone that marks the GILES Family
plot (see below). Family members buried within the plot have individual
markers. The people in the photograph are descendants of Cora and Will
GILES - two granddaughters and a great-great granddaughter. They are
looking down over the side of the mountain toward Harriman below. In
the plot are W.M. GILES, his wife Cora Pickens (ELLIS) GILES, daughter
May (GILES) HUNLEY, nieces Mary Christine and Billie Lee HUNLEY,
and son Hobbs GILES.

The
origin of Harriman City Judge William Morgan GILES' middle name is not yet known. Maybe the
proximity of the Morgan grave(s) to his is a clue. That is Will and
Cora's marker directly behind the upright Morgan stone. Clifford
MORGAN's marker, seen below, is the one flush to the ground visible to
the left of Will and Cora's marker.

Newt
is a first cousin and brother-in-law to Henry Giles. His grave and his
wife's are to the left of Henry and Vesta's. Net's aluminum marker
reads, Newton Patterson 1905, 1966.
To the right is a funeral home marker for his wife (paper in an
aluminum frame): Marie Henderson (PASS) PATTERSON, sister of Vesta. 22
April 1906, 20 Oct 1949. The stone visible in front of Newt's aluminum
marker doesn't appear to have ever been inscribed. I don't know whether
or not he and Marie ever had permanent markers.
