Descendants of John Harris

First Generation

General Notes: He lived in the ancestral home at Prittlewell, and was buried in the Church of St. Mary near the Guild of the Name of Jesus. He also possessed a house at Hadley which he devised to his wife Joan. His will was dated 8 June 1508 and witnessed by the Rector of Hadley, John Johnson. Richard Bower is mentioned as being his servant.

A copy of John Harris' will has been obtained - in Latin - in it he refers to his wife, Joan, and children William, Henry and Margaret.

[This] Is a very lengthy document consisting of eight closely-written pages, equivalent to about sixteen ordinary folios. - extract from it only a few passages.

The Harris family were originally of Prittlewell. William Harris of that place married Anne daughter of - Jernegan and had Arthur Harris, also of Prittlewell, who by Joanna his wife, daughter of Thomas Percy, second son of Henry Earl of Northumberland, had William Harris, the testator. Morant gives the date of his death 21st Sept., 1555, a year too early, which his will, as well as Machyn's Diary, corrects. Machyn, who most probably performed the office of undertaker, thus records his burial: "1556 the XVI day of September waas bered in Essex at Southmynster, one Master William HAR[ris], Sherriff of Essex, notable ryche bothe in landes and fermes, with a penon .... and cott armur and iiij baners of emages of armes and vj dosen of skoychyons and mony morners, and a grett dolle."

His will contains very precise directions for the construction of his tomb and the celebration of his obsequies, and shews, as Machyn remarks, that he was a man of great wealth and had large possessions. He describes himself as of Southminster, in the county of Essex, Esq., and sometime inhabiting in the parish of Rochford. ..........

Essex Review (1896?)
On the 27th June 1556 Stratford witnessed one of the most dreadful scenes attendant upon the Maryan persecutions, for on that day eleven men and two women were publicly burnt in one fire upon the piece of ground now occupied by the church of St. John the Evangelist in the Broadway. Their names were Henry Adlington, Lawrence Penam, Henry Wye, William Hallywell, Thomas Bowyer, George Searles, Edmund Hurst, Lyon Cawch, Ralph Jackson, John Derifall, John Routh, Elizabeth Pepper, and Agnes George. At Aldgate, they were early in the morning delivered to the Sheriff of Essex, "and then pinioned and placed in three carts, and commenced their last sad journey." The strongly guarded cavalcade moved through Whitechapel, along Mile End to Stratford, where more than 20,000 persons had assembled to witness the dreadful scene. "The eleven men were tied to three stakes and the two women were placed loose in the midst, and so they were all burned in one fire, with so much love to one another that it made all the lookers-on marvel." Sturdy William Harris of Cricksea who was that year High Sheriff of Essex, must have had a most unenviable office to discharge, when, "alarmed by the signs of sympathy on the part of the people at the sight of the sufferers, he ordered the light to be applied to the huge pile of wood and rushes, uttering the words: 'God knoweth best when His corn is ripe',"

He built Cricksea Place, the new house referred to as being in his possession in the Inquest Post Mortem, 1559, and lived there. Morant wrote that the Herrys family had a large brick house here, in a pleasant park well stored with timber. John Norden (1594) includes Cricksey Parke, the seat of Arthur Herrys, in his description of Essex. He was High Sheriff of Essex in 1589, a Justice of the Peace, and one of the Commissioners appointed in 1577 to enquire into piratical practices along the Essex coast. He married Dorothy daughter of Sir William Waldegrave of Smallbridge, Suffolk; died in 1597 and was buried in Burnham Church (Burnham Church Registers)

His will, dated 19th May 1597 was witnessed by Edmonde Freake, John Hildersham and Johyn Lynsey.

From - Berry's 'Essex'
The Burnham horns affair must have enlivened the town in the dull midwinter days of 1584. To adorn the outer door with horns was an ancient method of telling the goodman of the house that he had been cuckolded. For the details we are indebted to that active magistrate, Arthur Herry's of Creeksea Place, for his full account.

Jeremy Havem a tailor of Southminster, and William Ward of Bradwell first related their stories. A month before Shrovetide, Haven and 'this fellow, a minstrel,' were in bed. In the same chamber lay Robert Gybbyns, a tailor of Bradwell, who told him of his plan to hang a pair of horns at Kempe's door and another at Knyfe's door in Burnham. Apparently Gybbyns and Kempe had been 'brabbling by the ears' (quarreling hotly) at Bradwell on the previous Sunday. According to Ward, Haven told Gybbyns last Candlemas that he was very sorry to hear about the brawls between the two men. Gybbyns' threatening comment was to the effect that he would deal with Kempe or his brother at the first opportunity. Next month the J.P. examined Agnes Moore and Philpott's wife, both of Burnham. The former said that on St. Matthew's Day, the day on which the horns were hanged up, she chanced to meet Philpott's wife of Burnham in the street, who told her that the defendant's brother, Gybbyns, had carried out his threat at her master's door. Agnes added that about a month before Shrovetide Gybbyns had used 'very great railing speeches and evil words' against her 'dame' (mistress) and said that he would shortly set up a pair of horns upon the sign of Kempe's, her master's house. The other woman told the J.P. that she had gone to Southminster on St. Matthew's Day about an hour before dawn, when she saw five men unknown to her coming from Burnham with long staves on their shoulders.

Herry's then prepared his own version. On the night of 23-24 February, five or six 'disordered' men raised a pair of horns on Kempe's and Knyfe's doors. The noisy laughter awakened the neighbours, who in the morning saw the 'ensigns.' Herry's, of course, does not mention the townsmen who jeered. This 'lewd and riotous' act, he wrote, caused a great offence among them, especially between the cuckolded men and their wives. The J.P. had no doubt that Gybbyns was the chief culprit.

From - Berry's 'Victorian History of Essex'
Three days before Christmas 1562 Francis Chaunsey of Shenfield, gentleman, took conies with ferrets and pursenets from the lands called Osgoods there belonging to Thomas Parker gentleman, and was fined 20d. In 1565 fifteen men, mostly of Great Warley, were charged with 'cony stealing' and bound over to appear by mutual recognizances, and Matthew Perry, a gentleman of that parish, was separately charged with shooting both a crossbow and a handgun. Two years later a Margaretting man with his greyhounds broke into Christopher Harry's grounds at 'Shenfield' (now Killigrews) and chased his conies with intent to kill them.

In 1564 the Chelmsford Hundred* jurors present that the way between the maple against 'Chenfeldes and Stistedes' lieth between the parishes of Writtle and Widford and is not mended, neither are the ditches scoured nor the wood felled off. Next year and again in 1566 it is still 'very noisome' between a farm called 'Systydes and the mill hill in the parishes of Writtle, Widford and Margetting.' Shenfields is the moated Tudor house, now called Killigrews, a quarter of a mile south-east of the Great Essex Road. Stisteds lay close to it on the opposite side; it was pulled down when Hylands Park was enlarged but its ancient kitchen-garden wall still stands by the now closed London gate off the park.

The residence of Sir William Harris and his wife Frances Astley was Shenfield Manor, which once belonged to the Gage family. Shenfield Manor lay in a low situation with a moat and drawbridge. There were two watch towers and a chapel.

About the year 1588, certain Mills were erected upon the River Thames, near the Bridge, to grind Corn for the better fupplying of the City, which had for some Years past fuffered very much by reafon of Dearth, and Scarcity of Corn, and that encreafed greatly for fome number of Miles about the City, on Account of the Difficulty of grinding Corn for the Relief of the Poor. Therefore, in the Month of March, 1588, the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty of the City, petitioned the Queen, that they might erect four Corn-Mills on the River Thames, under two Roofs near the Bridge, in Such Places where it Fhould breed no Annoyance. Whereupon feveral of the Council, viz. the Lord Chancellor Hatton, the Earl of Leicefter, Charles Howard, Baron of Effingham. That being by them advifed, the Queen might be moved to grant their Requesft, if it fhould be found behoofeful for the City, and not huurtful to the River Thames. Mr. Osborn, Commiffioners for the Building of certain Mills on the South Side of Thames, upon the Starlings above the Bridge: And Commiffioners above named have fent for us, the Mafter and Affiftants of the Trinity-Houfe of Deptforth-Strond in Kent, that we fhould make the Survey, whether the Erecting and Building of thofe Mills might be prejudicial or hurtful to the faid River. The Trinity House Corporation (a Society or Guild) was originally based at Trinity Hall, Deptford. The organization was established in 1512 for the betterment of the navigation, pilotage and the maintenance of lighthouses, beacons and naval landmarks. The Corporation was governed by a Master, four Wardens and eighteen Elder Brethren. One of the conditions for holding office was that the member held land in Deptford.

History of Kent - Edward Hasted - Vol. 1 p.364 CHEVENING - CHEPSTED-HOUSE
is a Feat and eftate, fituated on the fouthern verge of this parifh, and was probably once part of the demefne land of the laft-defcribed manor (Chevening). The firft mention I find of it, feparate from it, is in the latter end of the reign of Q. Elizabeth; when it was in the poffeffion of Robert Cranmer, who refided here. He was fon of Thomas Cranmer, of Aflacton in the co. of Nottingham, efq; and married Jane Graie, daughter of Henry Graie, of the co. of Suffolk, efq; by whom he had iffue an only daughter and heir, Anne. He died March 4, 1619, aet. 72 years, and lies buried in this church.
Anne, his daughter, carried this feat and eftate in marriage to fir Arthur Herrys, knt. eldeft son of fir William Herrys, of Crickfey in Effex, knt. (d) by whom he had iffue two fons; Cranmer and John, and a daughter, Jane (e)

Sir Arthur died poffeffed of this eftate Jan. 9, 1632, and was fucceeded in it by his fecond fon by the firsft marriage, John Herrys, esq; who married Frances, daughter of Fir Thomas Dacre, of Chefhunt in Hertforfhire, knt. and widow of Mr. John Norris. She furvived her faid husfband, by whom she had one fon, and afterwards carried this feat, with the eftate belonging to it, to her third hufband, Wm. Prieftly, of Wild-hill in Effingdon in the co. of Herts, by whom fhe had two fons; William, who died an infant, and Thomas.

After the dissolution of the religious houses , it was refounded by grant of Queen Elizabeth in 1572, for the residence and support of a master, a chaplain, and six poor aged men. Thomas Fanshawe, his heirs and assigns were appointed visitors and governors. (This Thomas was Sir Arthur's first cousin, mentioned in his father's will).

He probably built Woodham Mortimer Hall,which was sold to Peter Chamberlin
in 1683. In his will, dated 4th November, 1630, he speaks of "my howse at Crixsey and my howse at Woodham Mortimer". He mentions his wife, Anne, his son-in-law, Henry Bowyer, and an indenture made between himself, Sir Henry Mildmay of Graces, and Giles Browne of Flamberds, Cold Norton, touching the settling of certain lands called Croxons, or of late held by - Croxon. He left fourtye shillings to the "Poore of Crixsey".

Sir Arthur Harris is buried in the Parish Church of All Saints at Cricksea:
Two steps lead to the Chancel: above them is an arch 19 feet high. In the aisle is the tomb of Sir Arthur Herrys, of Creeksea Place, with the following inscriptions:

-- is a Feat and eftate, fituated on the fouthern verge of this parifh, and was probably once part of the demefne land of the laft-defcribed manor (Chevening). The firft mention I find of it, feparate from it, is in the latter end of the reign of Q. Elizabeth; when it was in the poffeffion of Robert Cranmer, who refided here. He was fon of Thomas Cranmer, of Aflacton in the co. of Nottingham, efq; and married Jane Graie, daughter of Henry Graie, of the co. of Suffolk, efq; by whom he had iffue an only daughter and heir, Anne.
He died March 4, 1619, aet. 72 years, and lies buried in this church. Anne, his daughter, carried this feat and eftate in marriage to fir Arthur Herrys, knt. eldeft son of fir William Herrys, of Crickfey in Effex, knt. (d) by whom he had iffue two fons; Cranmer and John, and a daughter, Jane (e)
(d) She died June 6, 1613, in the 27th year of her age, and was buried in this church. Thefe Herrys bore for their arms - Or, on a ben azure 3 cinquefoils of the fields

Which appeareth Anne Handford of the Parish of St. Andrews Holborne London Spinster and altogeth that shee heeds with the Lady Herris is Executrix at the time of Death and that as soon as the said Deceased had departed this life which happened upon the first day of April last shee this Desputed was desired by the Executor Thomas Herris Esqur to search among the Deceased Writeings whether shee has made a Will or not Whereupon the sd Deponent accordinglye went into the closett within the Chamber wherein the Deceased dyed and after haveing made some search among the Deceaseds papers at last she found amongst other writeings the will now exhibited in a box and further Deposeth that shee wood in the Deceaseds life time very well acquainted with the hand writeing of the said Deceased and that haveing perused the said Will shee believes the same to bee all the proper hand writeing of the said deceased

....... married Sir Henry Mildmay of Graces, Little Baddow, by special licence granted on 14th May 1609, at Woodham Mortimer. Deeds now in the possession of Sir Anthony Mildmay of Dogmersfield Park, Hants, show that certain of the Herrys estates then passed to the Mildmay family (letter from Isabel, Lady St. John Mildmay, dated 18th February, 1933). Lady Alice Mildmay predeacesed her parents, and is believed to have taken her life about 1615. The tragedy, from the time of her betrothal at Cricksea Place, is told in 'Gracys Walk' by Jesse Berridge (1929). Both she and her husband were buried in Woodham Mortimer Church.

Hercules Calcott - In a History of the County of Isle of Wight we find this individual as signer of a petition to the County Commissioners in October 1677 for the release of William West, 'a rebel absconding, who took up arms against the Indians by whom his father had been most barbarously murdered, was taken prisoner and carried aboard ship, from hence to prison and was condemned to death but has made his escape and as yet has not been found'. Hercules is believed to be the direct descendant (son) of Sir Caeser Calclough (spelling variant evidenced in various Virginia Documents). Other sons of Sir Caeser were Major George Calclough and John.

Sir Cranmer Herrys was knighted by Charles I a Greenwich on the 21st June 1629. He succeeded to the Cricksea estate on his father's death in 1631. His name was included in a list of malignants, who had failed to contribute towards the public charge of the kingdom. It was presented to the House of Commons on 15th May 1643. On 17th September, 1660, he and other Essex gentry petitioned General Monk, in an address, indicating that they had adhered to Charles II, and had suffered imprisonment or sequestration during the Commonwealth. He married Martha Holford, who predeceased him, and had two daughters, Martha and Mary. He was buried at Woodham Mortimer on the 21st, his funeral expences amounting to £44.17s.6d.
After his death James and Mary Herrys, his other daughter, successfully petitioned in the Court of Arches for a fresh grant of Letters of Administration to the two daughters jointly. Apparently he had lived at his house at Woodham Mortimer, with Charles Mildmay and his daughter Ann, and had given up housekeeping on his own account. Thus it is not surprising that the various parties concerned resorted to litigation in the Court of Chancery in 1675. Whatever the result, the Cricksea estate appears to have passed to the Mildmay family, in whose possession it remained until 1901.

In the name of God Amen I Edward Herris late of Tillingham and now of Much Baddow in the County of Essex Gentleman being of sound and disposing mind & memory calling to mind the uncertainty of human life doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner following

Ann Herrys married Charles Mildmay, the third son of Sir Henry Mildmay of Woodham Mortimer. She lived at Woodham Mortimer and survived her husband who died on 11th July 1671. Their daughter and heiress Martha, married Sir Charles Tyrrell of Heron, Bart. on 7th September 1682 at Woodham Mortimer.
The Tyrrell family had been great sufferers for their loyalty to Charles I, as may be seen from the inscription on the grave of Sir Charles' grandfather, John Tyrrell, at East Horndon.

Cranmer Harris of Lincoln's Inn, possessed the manor of Kingshorne at the restoration of Charles II. He was afterwards of Christ Church in Canterbury, where he died in 1727, without issue, and was buried in the cloisters there. His sister, Mrs Annabella Harris became possessed of this manor, and soon afterwards passed it by sale to Sir Edward Filmer, of East Sutton, bart.
