Capt. John Smith and his son Joseph were captured during the French and Indian War at Ft. Vause, June 25, 1756. Joseph died on the way to New Orleans, son John was killed in the battle, and the Captain was taken to France where he remained for two years.
Ref: Gleanings of Va Hist - Booger. Capt John Smith was born in Eng in 1698. He settled with his parents in Ulster, Ireland and from there he removed, with his family to Chester Co, PA about 1730. He was a former officer of the British Army, and was comm. Captain at the Orange Court, VA on June 24, 1742, serving in the French and Indian War. (Orange Ct Order Book, 1741-43, p. 160).
He patented 400 acres on Mossy Green, and 400 acres on Spring Creek in Augusta Co, Vamar 30 1745. He died at Smithland, the home of his son Daniel, shortly after the beginning of the Revolution.
His will was found in the unindexed records at Staunton, dated May 7, 1753, written on a single sheet of paper - wife Margaret, dau Margaret Louisa, b 1741, m Hugh Reece Bowen d.1780. Sons Were: 9 see cards.
Will had a seal of red wax bearing the figure of a horn of plenty, out of which pours a fleur-de-lis, and water onto a sprig or branch of a vine, curved as an inverted rainbow. [S67]
