Notes

History Notes on William Burks:

•Notes from Emory Burks, Eclectic, AL Dec 1980

Parmelia Walthall married William Burks (spelt in various records also as Burke and Burkes) Feb. 29, 1816 in Jasper co GA. They lived here about 8 years and removed to Fayette Co GA and lived there several years. About 1832 they removed to Tuscaloosa Co AL. He and his wife bought land in Tuscaloosa Co in 1836. About 1841, they removed to MS. He and his wife sold land in Tuscaloosa Co AL in 1841 and it seems that they did not live in AL after that year. In 1848 he started paying taxes in Chickasaw Co MS. He died intestate in 1863. In 1868 the settlement of his estate was started. He recorded for the 1850 census that he was born in TN. (See AL Archives Dept., "Burks Family Records File.")

•Notes from Gayle Basaldu, Everman, TX Dec 1994:

Fought in the War of 1812. Served as a Private in Captain G.C. Brandon's MS Militia and also serve as a Cpl in Capt. Francis Wood's MS Militia. He enlisted on 17 Sept 1812 and was dischaarged on 17 May 1813. The second time he served, he enlisted on 17 Jan 1814 and was discharged on 31 Mar 1815. In 1853-54, William was living in Chickasaw Co., MS where he died.

•Notes from Clyde Campbell Genealogical Records and Correspondence, Collection No. 54, Envelope No. 32, Kansas Historical Society, Topeka, KS. Obtained 13 Apr 1995. Information furnished to Clyde Campbell by Marjorie Jackson 8/8/61.

War of 1812-served under Gen. Claiborn in LA, discharged at Baton Rouge. Unknown where he enlisted, or wat state he served from.

1816-married in Jasper co GA.

1832/33-moved from Ga to Tuscaloosa AL.

1841/43-moved from AL to MS. Settled in Chickasaw Co MS.

Born in TN or GA. He told 1850 Census taker he was born TN. 1860 Census gives him born in GA. His widow said he was born Lincoln Co., GA.

His descendants were told the family was originally from VA. There are echoes of NC-vague, nothing definite. TN was NC into 1796.

Older relatives in Columbus, MS say he was an orphan. that when he was a samll boy, his mother tokk him and a small borther to live eith relatives-kind of relatives, where they lived, unknown. do not know how much value to put on that story. These are the same relatives who said he was born in Ireland.

No clues to name of his father, or mother. He named his first dau Margaret. This is not a Walthall name. He named his oldest son and child Bennett. Not a Walthall name. The next oldest son was named Edward W. which is for father of his wife, Edward Walthall.

His father may or may not have been a Revolutionary Soldier. He might have been too young to be in Revolution. Born 1770's he could have a son 1796, but too young for Revolutionary war service. Or he may have been a Revoutionary Soldier. If he was not, then William Burks grandfather probably was.

Mrs. Akin things our William Burks and her James Lyon Burks (m. Martha Robinson 1811, Jasper co GA) may have been brothers, or at least some kind of kin. she also thinks that James Lyon Burks' family was kin to Joseph Burks (d. 1828, Wilkes Co. GA, Revolutionary Soldier) family. Her grandmother and grandfather were both Burks: her grandfather descended from Joseph of Wilkes Co GA and her grandmother from james Lyon Burks 1891-1862.

You will notice that our William Burks named a son James Lyon Burks and James Lyons Burks names a son William C. James Lyons Burks was an orpha, his mother took him when a samll boy to live in her father's home, is the tale told by his descendants. His family originally from VA with vague echoes of NC & TN.
