This Indenture made the eighty Day of November, 1779 BETWEEN George Ledbetter and Elizabeth his wife, William Dale and Sarah his wife of the one part and Henry Mangum of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five thousand Pounds current money of Virginia . . . have bargained sold enfeoffed released and confirmed unto the said Henry Mangum . . . on certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying in Brunswick County and on the south side of Fountains Creek containing by Estimation two hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less with a water grist Mill standing on the above said Creek and the land bounded as follows to wit BEGINNING at the Creek in Nathan Harris's line thence bounded on the said Harrisons line to Henry Mangums own line thence along his line to John Vicks line thence along his line to Pearsons line thence along Pearsons line to a new marked line of the said Pearsons thence along the new marked line down to the Creek thence up the said Creek to the first station taking in the above said Mill together will all woods ways water courses profits commoditus heriditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging . . . This Indenture made the 20th day of July, 1779 Between Joana Finnie & Mary Finnie of the one part and Thomas Bracy of the other part, . . . for and in consideration of four thousand two hundred and twenty pounds Virginia money . . . paid by the said Thomas Bracy . . . do give grant bargain sell and confirm unto him the said Thomas Bracy . . . two certain tracts or parcels of Land Containing nine hundred acres more or less lying and being in the County of Brunswick adjoining the Lands of Thomas Bracy, William Wanvich, Charles Yarbrough and John Steed . . . Signed by Joanna Finnie and Mary Finnie and witnessed by Thomas Tabb, Sally Harrison, James Tabb, Robert Hicks, and William Wells (his mark). At Court held for Brunswick County the 28th Day of February 1780 This Indenture was proved by the oath of Robert Hicks a witness thereto and at a Court held for the said County the 27th Day of March following the said Indenture was proved by the oaths of Thomas Tabb and James Tabb witness thereto and ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made the twenty fifth Day of January, 1777 BETWEEN Athur (sic) Turner and Elizabeth his wife of the Parish of Meherrin and County of Brunswick of the one part and John Lightfoot of the Parish and County aforesaid of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds . . . do grant bargain and sell alien enfeoff release and confirm to the said John Lightfoot . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres lying and being on the south side of Fountains Creek in the County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a white oak at Fountains Creek thence South forty degree west one hundred and eight five poles to a Red Oak thence south forty degrees east one hundred and sixty poles to a white oak thence south seventy two degrees east seventy four poles to a red oak thence north forty five degrees east one hundred and twenty two poles to a hickory at Fountains Creek thence up the said Creek to the BEGINNING and being a tract or parcel of Land granted to John Linch by patent bearing date the twenty eighth day of September one thousand seven hundred and twenty eight . . . Signed by Arthur Turner and witnessed by Turner Bynum, Thomas Lightfoot, Anselm Harrison, and George Waddell. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 24th Day of March, 1777. This Indenture was partly proved by the oaths of Thomas Lightfoot and George Waddell two of the witnesses thereto. This Indenture made the twenty first Day of May, 1780 BETWEEN Colen Campbell of the Parish of Saint Andrew and County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the one part and James Williams of the aforesaid Parish and County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of thirty pounds . . . have given granted and bargained sold and conveyed confirmed assigned and let over to the said James Williams . . . one certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick in Virginia containing one hundred acres taken out of the Tract of Land whereon Colen Campbell now lives it being grant of a Patent granted to Walter Campbell bearing date And bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a white oak on Harrison's line, thence it is bounded by Land of Daniel Mason to a white oak on Campbell's line, thence along his line to a spanish oak by the road thence along the road to a black oak, thence along a line of Marked Trees to the Creek, thence down the Creek to a gum on Harrison's line, thence on his line to a red oak corner tree still on his line to the Beginning . . . and the said Collen Campbell for himself his heirs executors and administrator doth covenant grant promise and agree to and with the said James Williams . . . KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents that we John Flood Edmunds, Charles Edmunds, and Edmund Webb of the County of Brunswick are held and firmly bound unto the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of one hundred thousand pounds . . . jointly and severally firmly by these Presents sealed with our seals and dated this twenty second Day of January 1781. THE CONDITIONS of the above obligation is such that of the above bound John Flood Edmund during the continuance in the Office of Sheriff shall truly and faithfully collect pay and account for all duties and Taxes within the County of Brunswick aforesaid Imposed In Virtue of an Act of Assembly passed at the last Session in May last past entitled an act for calling in and redeeming the money now in circulation and for comiting (sic) and funding new Bills of Credit according to the resolutions of the Congress of the eighteenth of March last, then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force. To all Christian People to whom these Presents shall come Greeting known ye that I Edward Rowell of Brunswick County and Ellener my wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty five pounds . . . to me in hand paid . . . by Thomas Binford of Prince George and Benjamin Crew of Charles City Counties, . . . give grant bargain sell alien convey and confirm unto the said Thomas Binford and Benjamin Crew . . . on certain Tract or parcel of Land containing three hundred and seventy five Acres . . . lying in the County of Brunswick and bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at the Mercy slash on Blands path thence along Blands path to a corner red Oak on the South side of the said path, thence along a line of marked Trees to a corner Pine on the West side of the main Road, thence along a line of marked Trees to a corner Pine, thence along a line of marked Trees to a corner red oak on the West side of Hall's branch, thence across the said branch to the mouth of the Mercy Slash, thence up the said Slash to the BEGINNING . . . I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th Day of January, 1781. Signed by Edward Rowel and Elener Rowel and witnessed by John Mackendree, Joshua Clark (his mark), Jacob Dupree (his mark), and Isaac Rowell. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 26th Day of January 1778. This Indenture was proved by the oath of Isaac Rowel a witness thereto, and acknowledged by Elener Rowel the wife she having been first privily examined as the Law directs. And at a Court held for the said County the 29th Day of January 1781, The said Indenture was proved by the oath of John Mackendree another witnesses thereto And at a Court held for the said County the 26th Day of February following The said Indenture was proved by the oath of Joshua Clarke another Witnesses thereto & Ordered to be Recorded. This Indenture made this 5th Day of January, 1781 BETWEEN William Clack and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Binns Jones of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of four thousand pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said Binns Jones . . . a certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County aforesaid containing by estimation four hundred acres . . . being all that Tract or parcel of Land whereon the said William Clack now lives and which he bought of Thomas Twitty Junr. by Deed bearing date the twenty third Day of May one thousand seven hundred sixty seven, Recorded in the County Court of Brunswick reference thereunto being had will more fully appear and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at the mouth of whetstone branch on Briery Creek, thence up the said branch to the head, thence a straight line to Williams's line, thence along Williams's line to the head of the Bull branch, thence a straight course to Russells path on Rattle Snake branch, thence down the sid branch to Briery Creek, thence down the said Creek as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by William Clack and Betty Clack, and witnessed by Edward Goodrich, George Steagall Junr. and John Jones. This Indenture made this 24th Day of October 1780 BETWEEN William Baugh of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Sarah Baugh of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of four thousand five hundred pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said Sarah Baugh . . . one Tract or parcel of Land containing three hundred and forty five acres . . . situate lying & being in the County aforesaid adjoining the ready Creek on the Southwest side thereof and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at the Creek on Edward Tatums lines, thence along the said line to Brodnaxes line, thence along Brodnax's line to Nathaniel Parhams line, thence along Parham's line to the ready Creek, thence down the said Creek according to the meanders thereof to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by William Baugh and witnessed by Edward Tatum, George Marshall (his mark) and Jesse Potts. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 26th Day of February 1781. This Indenture made this [blank] Day of [blank] , 1781 BETWEEN William Dewberry and [blank] his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Mordicai Jones of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three thousand five hundred pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Mordicai Jones . . . all those two several tracts or parcels of Lands lying and being in the Parish of Saint Andrew and County of Brunswick aforesaid one containing two hundred and sixty five acres or thereabouts purchased by the sd. William Dewberry of Nathaniel Tatum by Deed bearing date the twenty second day of May 1775, the other containing two hundred and fifty acres more or less purchased by the said William Dewberry of Wm. Brent by Indenture bearing date the 24th Day of February 1779 which said several Deeds are duly recorded in the County Court of Brunswick . . . Signed by William Dewberry (his mark). This Indenture made the 26th Day of February 1781 BETWEEN Nathaniel Harrison Senr. of Brunswick County of the one part and Nathaniel Harrison Junior and James Harrison of the said County sons of Gabriel Harrison decd. and Grandsons of the said Nathaniel Harrison Senr. of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth unto the said Nathaniel Harrison and James Harrison his Grandsons as also for the better maintenance and preferment of the said Nathaniel Harrison & James Harrison . . . doth give grant alien enfeoff and confirm unto Nathaniel Harrison and James Harrison, three hundred and thirty five Acres of Land situate in the said County of Brunswick on the South side of Stergeon run that is to say three hundred acres out of the Tract the said Nathaniel Harrison bought of Robert Gee and another Tract surveyed in his own name and thirty five Acres out of the Tract he bought of Samuel Harwell as is already laid off by well known lines, be the same three hundred and thirty five acres, more or less to be continued together for their joint and mutual benefit untill (sic) they come of age, and then to be equally divided between them with all and singular the advantages hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging . . . This Indenture made the twenty first Day of February 1781 BETWEEN Benjamin Blick of the County of Brunswick of the one part, and the Orphans of Gabriel Harrison of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the love and friendship which he the said Benjamin Blick doth bear to the said Orphans Doth after his and his wifes decease Give grant alien and confirm unto the said Orphans four Negroes and their increase from this date (to wit) unto Jane Harrison one Negro Cyries . . . unto Nathaniel Harrison one Negro Judith and her increase . . . unto James Harrison one Negro Grace and her increase . . ., and unto Sarah Anne Harrison one negro Aggy and all her increase after this date . . . But if either of the girls should die before they come of age or before they have a Child to heir their Negroes, then the other Girl shall have her sisters negroes . . . Signed by Benjamin Blick. This Indenture made the twelfth Day of January 1781 BETWEEN Matthew Smart & Mary his wife and John Moodie of Dinwiddie County of the one part and Buckner Harwell of the Brunswick County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of thirty two pounds . . . whereof the said Matthew Smart and John Moodie and our wifes Mary Smart and Mary Moodie doth hereby acknowledge . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien a certain parcel of Land containing sixty six and two thirds acres, lying and being in Saint Andrew Parish in the County aforesaid being part of one hundred acres formerly William Browder now the property of his three Daughters bounded as follows BEGINNING at Drury Lanier, and William Lanier's corners, thence along Drury Lanier's Line to Buckner Harwell's line, thence along his to Borrow's line thence along the said Borrow's line to the said William Laniers to the BEGINNING . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To John Jones Junr. & Joseph Jones Gentlemen of the County of Dinwiddie Greeting Whereas Mathew Smart and Mary his wife and John Moodie and Sarah his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and Sale bearing date with these Presents have sold and conveyed unto Buckner Harwell the fee simple Estate of sixty six and two thirds Acres of Land . . . And whereas the said Mary and Sarah cannot conveniently travel to our Court to make Acknowledgment of the said conveyance Therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to receive the Acknowledgment which the said Mary and Sarah shall be willing to make before you of the Conveyance aforesaid in the said Indenture which is hereunto annexed and we do therefore command you or any two of you that you do personally go the said Mary & Sarah and receive their Acknowledgement of the same . . . the 12th Day of January 1778 in the second year of the commonwealth. I Do hereby acknowledge that when I bought a certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing by estimation one hundred acres lying & being in the County of Brunswick on the East side of the long Slash joining the said John Blick's Land, that he purchased of Thomas Yeargain, bounded by John Blick, James Bass, Benjamin Lanier, William Rideout, James Parham, and Jesse Berryman, of Charles Harrison, our bargain was that I was to have a Deed from John Yeargain & his wife, and to trust to this title in the said Land, that the said Charles Harrison was not to warrant or Defend the same, or be any way answerable or liable any further than John Yeargain's and his wifes right. It Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal the 10th Day of March 1784. Signed by John Blick, and witnessed by Cuddey Harrison, John Gladish, John Rideout, Miles House, and Thomas Yeargain. Brunswick County Court the 25th July 1785. This Instrument of writing was proved by the oath of Cuddey Harrison, a witness thereto and having been proved on the 27th September 1784 by the Oaths of Miles House & Thomas Yeargain also witnesses thereto is Ordered to be Recorded. THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia to William Morton and Samuel White Gentlemen greeting Whereas William Jones and Mary Daus his wife of the County of Charlotte by their certain Indenture of bargain & Sale bearing date the 2d Day of 1784 have sold and conveyed unto William Harrison Junior of the said County of Brunswick the fee simple Estate of two hundred acres of Land . . . lying and being in the said County of Brunswick and whereas the said Mary Daus cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said Conveyance Therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Mary Daus shall be willing to mae before you of the conveyance . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Mary Daus and receive her acknowledgment . . . this 2d Day of November 1784. By Virtue of this Commission to us directed we the Subscribers have privily examined Mary Daus the wife of the within named William Jones in manner and form as the said Commission requires and have received her acknowledgment of the Indenture . . . certified under our hands and Seals this 2d Day of November 1784. This Indenture made this twenty eight day of June 1785 BETWEEN Daniel Mason of Dinwiddie County of the one party and Benjamin Davis of Brunswick County of the other party . . . for and in the consideration of twenty pounds . . . and six thousand pounds of Petersburg Tobacco . . . by these presents do grant bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff & confirm unto the said Benjamin Davis . . . one certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the aforesaid County of Brunswick on the North side of Meherrin River and on the South side of Rose's Creek and bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at the aforesaid Roses Creek at the said Davis's line, Thence South along the aforesaid Davis's line unto Benjamin Edwards Brown's line, thence along the said Brown's line West unto a shrub oak a corner a (sic) Nathaniel Harrison's line, thence along the said Harrison's line North unto the aforesaid Creek begun on, thence down the various courses of the run of the aforesaid Creek unto the BEGINNING as it meanders, containing by estimation ninety nine acres . . . This Indenture made this Day of February 1786 BETWEEN Lewis Hicks and Salley Hicks his wife of the County of Mecklenburg of the one part and Charles Collier of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds . . . have given, granted and sold, aliened, enfeoffed and confirmed unto the said Charles Collier . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick on the waters of Little Genitoe & Great Genitoe Creek containing by estimation three hundred and sixty three acres . . . bounded in manner following (VIZ) BEGINNING at a corner red oak of William Ledbetter's line, thence North nine Degrees west three hundred and forty poles to a white oak on Peterson's line thence along Peterson's line to Benjamin Ivy's, thence along the said Ivy's line to a Pine on John Williams's line, thence a new line on adjoining Henry Ledbetter's line to a corner red oak near the long Meadow branch, thence up the said branch as it meanders to Benjamin Walker's line, thence along the said line to Thomas Preston's line, thence along the said Preston's line to William Ledbetter's line, thence along the said Ledbetter's line to a corner black Jack, thence seven degrees west to a corner black Jack, thence along the old line to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Lewis Hicks and Salley Hicks and witnessed by Charles Hicks, Theophilus Harrison, George Hicks, and Charles Floyd. Brunswick Court the 27th February 1786. This Indenture made the fourth Day of March 1786 BETWEEN Joseph Greenhill of the County of Brunswick of the one part and James Harrison of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of One thousand and sixty three pounds . . . doth grant, bargain and sell unto the said James Harrison . . . One certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying & being on the South side of Meherrin River in the County of Brunswick containing eight hundred & fifteen acres . . . bounded as follows, to wit, BEGINNING at Walker's & Fisher's line on Meherrin River, thence up the said River as it meanders to a Ash on Nathaniel Robinson's corner, thence along the said Robinson's line South twenty four Degrees West one hundred & sixty four Poles to Hicks's corner between several trees, thence along his line South fifty Degrees East one hundred & forty six poles to a small Walnut at a corner, thence south forty Degrees west sixty two poles to a great sweet gum, thence south twenty three Degrees East two hundred and seventy two poles to a dead hickory, thence South forty nine degrees West sixty poles to a Spanish Oak, thence South ten degrees West seventy Poles to a Red oak, thence on Beverly Brown's line North eighty five Degrees East three hundred & four poles to a willow oak on Walker's & Fisher's line, thence along their line North four Degrees West three hundred and eighty six Poles to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this thirteen day of June 1786 BETWEEN Sarah Lanier of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Burwell Lanier of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the love and affection which she beareth to the said Burwell Lanier . . . doth give, grant & confirm unto the said Burwell Lanier . . . upon the following conditions (if he arrives at the age of twenty one years and that she that she has the sole use management and profits of the lands herein given during her natural life on tract or parcel of land containing sixty nine acres be the same more or less being the same that was left to her by her brother John Lanier bounded by the lands belonging to the Orphans of Grabriel (sic) Harrison, those belonging to the said Burwell Lanier and the Mill pond belonging to Mister Henry Simmons's Estate . . . This Indenture witnesseth that William Fogg of the County of Brunswick and parish of Meherrin for and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds . . . paid by William and James Huff and Allan Love all of the County of Brunswick and parish of Meherrin . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien release enfeoff and confirm unto the said William and James Huff and Allan Love . . . all that tract or parcel of Land which the said William Fogg now lives on situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick bounded on the South by James Petillo on the North by James Brown East by Edward Travis and on the West by George Browder containing one hundred and five acres . . . to the only purpose use and behoof of the said William and James Huff and Allan Love their heirs and assigns forever upon special trust and confidence and to and for the uses interests and purposes trusts following that is to say the said William and James Huff and Allan Love shall and will dispose of the said one hundred and five acres for the best price to be got for the same the sale to be made by the publick auction for ready money and the money arising or accrueing from such sale or dispositions and the residue of the said money arising from the said sale and disposition if any to be paid to the said William Fogg . . . that the said William and James Huff and Allan Love their heirs and assigns shall and will, well, truly and faithfully keep perform and fulfill the trust by the presents reposed in them in selling and disposing of the said land for the best price to be got for the same at publick auction in ready money, and in the first place paying themselves satisfying the debt and interest that may arise and become due to them and the residue if any to be the said William Fogg . . . KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I Solomon Hall of the County of Brunswick Colony and Dominion of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and seven pounds twelve shillings . . . to me in hand paid by Owen Myrick . . . doth hereby grant bargain sell and doth hereby make over in plain and open market five hundred acres of land that I purchases [sic] of Henry and Daniel Walton lying on Quarrel Swamp and five Virginia born Negroes by name Silvia, Rhody, Angelica, Lucy, Ephraim, and their future increase . . . which said land and Negroes is the undoubted right of the said Solomon Hall and by him the said Hall mortgages delivered unto Owen Myrick in full satisfaction for the above mentioned sum of one hundred and seven pounds twelve shillings and lawful interest thereon from this date till paid and I the said Solomon Hall do warrant the just and true right of the said land and Negroes unto the said Owen Myrick at any time or times when he the said Owen Myrick shall think proper to request or demand them . . . when he pleases to take them and out of the said land and Negroes satisfy him of for the above said sum of money with lawful interest thereon as above mentioned which said land and Negroes I the said Solomon Hall deliver by these presents unto the said Owen Myrick . . . this twenty second Day of April 1788. This Indenture made and intented the eleventh Day of February 1789 BETWEEN Fredrick Sims of the County of Wilkes and State of Georgia of the one part and William Edward Brodnax of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred pounds . . . do give grant bargain sell confirm and release unto the said William Edward Brodnax . . . all the right title and interest of in and to the plantation and tract of land devised by the last Will and Testament of John Sims deceased father of the said Fredrick Sims unto his brother John Sims his son after the death of his mother the said Will bearing date the twelfth Day of May 1778 and recorded in the County of Brunswick will more fully appear the said John Sims having conveyed the said tract of land to the said William Edward Brodnax by deed of feoffment and who now hath the possession thereof . . . This Indenture made this twenty second Day of June 1789 BETWEEN Theophilious Harrison of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Zachariah Floyd of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and ninety six pounds . . . doth grant, bargain and sell unto the said Zachariah Floyd . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing one hundred and ninety six acres . . . lying and being in the County aforesaid and bounded as follows BEGINNING at the said Floyd's corner red oak on the head branch of Cocks Creek thence down the said head branch of Cocks Creek to an elm thence South eighty seven degrees East one hundred and seventy nine poles to a small ridge path North twenty nine poles to where it crosses the turkey oak, thence along the sd. Floyd's line South thirty four degrees West two hundred fifty five poles to the sd. Floyd's corner scrub oak, thence South eighty eight degrees West sixty one poles to the BEGINNING being part of the tract of land containing nine hundred and seventy eight acres bought of the Executors of Philip Lightfoot (decd.) by the said Theophilous Harrison . . . This Indenture made the twenty seventh Day of April 1789 BETWEEN Thos. Claiborne and Mary his wife of the Parish of St. Andrews and County of Brunswick of the one part and James Bafs of the said County and Parish of Meherin of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sume of eight hundred and sixty two pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said James Bafs . . . all that tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in Meherin Parish and County of Brunswick on both sides of Great Creek sometimes Hickses Creek and within the following bounds (to wit) BEGINNING at William Steavensons and William Harrisons corner red oak saplin thence along the said Harrison and Robert Hicks's line North 64 degrees East 382 poles to a corner red oak on Edwardses line thence South eighty degrees East 40 poles to a corner shrub oak on the said Edwardses line thence South sixty five degrees West 84 poles to a small posimon and maple on the Little Creek thence up the said creek to John Houses corner ash thence by the said Houses line South twenty six degrees West 78 [or 70] poles to a corner red oak thence by the said line South 20 degrees West 113 poles to a corner ash on the South fork of the Steep Branch thence up the said branch and by John Houses line to a corner poplar near the head of a small branch on the said Houses line thence by a new chopt line to a corner poplar in the said Claibornes spring branch just by his plantation thence down the said branch as it meanders to the before mentioned creek thence up the sd. creek to the mouth of the Litewood Branch thence up the said branch as it meanders to a turkey oak thence North 15 degrees West 114 poles by Throwers line to a corner white oak in Jacksons Lick Branch thence down the said branch to a corner great white oak thence North 7 1/2 degrees West 267 poles to the BEGINNING corner red oak saplin and being part of several tracts of land as by the patents may be seen be the same eight hundred and twenty acres . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Thomas Claiborne James Harrison and Binns Jones Gentlemen Greeting whereas Lewis Hicks & Sarah Hicks by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 20th Day of November 1784 have sold & conveyed unto John Wills the fee simple estate of three hundred acres of land . . . and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Sarah Hicks cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make her acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Sarah Hicks shall be willing to make before you . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Sarah Hicks and receive her acknowledgment of the same & examine her privily & apart from the said Lewis Hicks her husband . . . the first Day of August 1786. In Obedience to the within writ we personally went to the said Sarah Hicks and did examine her privately and apart from the within named Lewis Hicks her husband and do certify to the said Court of Brunswick County that she did acknowledge the Indenture within named to be her act and deed and that she did the same without the persuasion or threats of her said husband . . . this 2d of August 1789. This Indenture made this twenty first Day of August 1789 BETWEEN Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Morgan his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Winfield Mason of the County of Dinwiddie of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty pounds . . . do covenant grant bargain and sell unto the said Winfield Mason . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing one hundred & sixty six acres . . . lying on the North side of Roses Creek, one hundreds part of which was formerly the property of Colling Camphill and by him conveyed to Jams. Williams & by the said Williams to Thomas Morgan the other sixty six acres formerly the property of Colling Campbell and by him conveyed to the said Thomas Morgan reference being had to the records of Brunswick County Court will more fully appear and bounded as follows by the lines of Thomas Fulks Edmund Harrison George Vaughan and Masons own line . . . Signed by Thomas Morgain and Elizabeth Morgain and witnessed by Burwell Abernathy, Robert Bolling Senior, and Richard Yates Bland. Brunswick County Court September 28th 1789. This Indenture was acknowledged by Thomas Morgain party thereto previous to which acknowledgement Elizabeth Morgain wife of the said Thomas being privately examined as the Law directs did voluntarily consent thereto and ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this twenty fourth Day of September 1789 BETWEEN Henry Ledbetter and Winnefred his wife of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia on the one part and James Wright of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of eighty pounds . . . doth hereby bargain sell alien, release and confirm unto the said James Wright . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation two hundred and twelve acres being the same more or less, lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid and bounded as follows VIZ BEGINNING at a white oak tree John Brewers corner, thence along the said Brewer's line to a corner scrub oak, thence up Brewers Branch to a corner turkey oak thence along a line chopt trees to Bowler Dobbins's line thence along Dobbins line to a corner scrub oak and thence along the said line to the Long Branch thence down the said branch Rattle Snake Creek thence down the said creek to a corner willow thence across the creek & along a line of chopped trees to a corner posimmon, thence along a line of chopt trees to a corner sweet gum on the creek thence down the meanders of the creek to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Henry Ledbetter and Winnifred Ledbetter and witnessed by Edward King, John Harrison, and John Wright. Brunswick County Court September 28th 1789. This Deed was acknowledged by Henry Ledbetter a party thereto as his act & deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 532.
KNOW all men by these presents that we William Vaughan, James Blick, Roger Mallory, Junr., Theophilus Harrison, John Hicks, Charles Hicks, Beverly Brown, Thomas Washington & Robert Harrison are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of fifteen thousand pounds . . . to be paid to the treasurer of the said Commonwealth for the time being . . . which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us . . . and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our hands & dated this twenty third day of November one thousand seven hundred & eighty nine. The Condition of this obligation is that whereas the above bounden William Vaughan is constituted & appointed sheriff of the County of Brunswick if therefore the said William Vaughan shall faithfully & truly collect account for & pay agreeable to Law all taxes imposed and becoming due in the said County for the year one thousand seven hundred & ninety and by Law to be received by him the said William Vaughan then that above obligation to be void signed sealed & acknowledged before Chas. KNOW all men by these presents that we William Vaughan, James Blick, Roger Mallory, Jur., Theophilus Harrison, John Hicks, Charles Hicks, Beverly Brown, Thomas Washington & Robert Harrison are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of twenty thousand pounds . . . to be paid to Beverly Randolph Esqr. Governor of the said Commonwealth . . . to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and every of us . . . jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals & dated this twenty third day of November one thousand seven hundred & eighty nine. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden William Vaughan is constituted & appointed sheriff of the County of Brunswick during pleasure by a Commission from the Governor under the Seal of the Commonwealth bearing date the twenty sixth Day of August 1789 if therefore the said William Vaughan shall well & truly collect all fines & forfeitures accruing or becoming due to the said Commonwealth in the said County of Brunswick and shall duly account for & pay the same into the treasury and shall also well and truly collect all officers fees and dues put into his hands to collect and duly account for & pay the same to the officers to whom such fees are due respectively at such times as are prescribed & limited by Law and shall well & truly execute all process & precepts to him directed & pay and satisfy all sums of money & tobacco by him received by virtue of any such process to the person or persons to whom the same shall be due his or their executors or administrators or assigns and in all other things shall truly & faithfully perform the said office of Sheriff during the time of his continuance then this the obligation be void sealed & delivered in presence of Chas. This Indenture made this 4th Day of March 1789 BETWEEN Elisha Clark and Mary his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Drury Stith, Senr. of the County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of six pounds . . . do grant bargain & sell unto the said Drury Stith . . . the fee simple estate of four acres of land lying & being in the said County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth BEGINNING at a turkey oak on Jones Williamses line thence new lines, South eighty five degrees West twenty poles to a shrub oak bush South five degrees East thirty two poles to a red oak saplin North eighty five degrees East twenty poles to a shrub oak on sd. Jones Williams's line thence along his line North five degrees West 32 poles to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Elisha Clark and witnessed by Charles Atkins, Willey Harrison, Wm. Nicholson, Tho. Stith, Senr. and Edmunds Stith. Brunswick County Court Jany. 25th 1790. This Indenture made this twenty second Day of August 1789 BETWEEN William Williams of the Parish of Meherrin and County of Brunswick of the one part and Jeremiah Mize Parish and County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five thousand pounds of tobacco . . . have given granted and bargained sold and conveyed confirmed assigned and let over to the said Jeremiah Mize . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County aforesaid containing one hundred acres . . . and bounded as followeth, to wit, BEGINNING on a red oak on Wesson line thence by his line to a corner shrub oak on Threeats line thence by his line corner red oak on Smiths line thence by his line to a corner shrub oak on a branch thence down the said branch to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by William Williams (his mark) and witnessed by James Harrison and William Magee. Brunswick County Court 22nd of March 1790. This Indenture made this twelfth Day of December 1789 BETWEEN Nathaniel Mason and Judith his wife of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the one part William Vaughan of the County and State aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of twenty seven pounds ten shillings . . . doth grant bargain & sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said William Vaughan . . . one certain tract or parcel of land in the County and State aforesaid on Beddingfields Creek containing twenty acres . . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a corner pine below the said Vaughans mill on Beddingfields Creek thence up the said creek as it meanders to a willow oak on the creek side nearly against Jesse Brewers & the said Vaughans corner on the opposite side of the creek thence a South corus [sic] eight poles to a corner pine thence South ten degrees East forty two poles thence South forty degrees East twenty one poles to three white oaks thence South seventy degrees East thirty eight poles to a pine thence South fifty degrees East ten poles to a white oak thence North twenty two degrees East fourteen poles to a spanish oak thence South eighty degrees East twenty eight poles to a white oak thence along a line of marked trees to a corner hicory near the mill dam thence down the side of the hill to a pine a corner tree thence to the FIRST STATION . . . This Indenture made the sixth Day of October 1790 BETWEEN Willis Wills of the County of Isle of White [sic] and State of Virginia of the one part and Owen Mirick of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of forty two pounds already paid . . . doth give grant alien enfeoff & confirm unto the said Owen Mirick a certain parcel of land situate in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation one hundred & fifty acres . . . and bounded as follows BEGINNING on the old Fort Road at a ded [sic] gum in a pond a corner tree joining Samuel Francifs thence along the said Francises line to the head of the Folly Branch thence down the said branch to Miricks line thence along the said Miricks line to Harrisons line three corner trees white oak red oak & pine thence adjoining the said Harrisons line to Wm. Warwicks line the same course adjoining the said Warwicks line to a pine a corner tree thence Easterly still joining Warwicks line to the line of Wm. Finch to the road thence down the road to the FIRST STATION . . . Signed by Willis Wills and witnessed by Joseph Hille, Shadrack Beale, and Robert Wills. Brunswick County Court October 25th 1790. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was proved according to law by the oaths of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 634.
This Indenture made the twentieth Day of November 1790 BETWEEN Samuel Frances of Southampton County in the State of Virginia of the one part and Owen Myrick of the County of Brunswick and State aforesaid of the other part . . . that I the said Samuel Frances for and in consideration of the sum of thirty pounds . . . hath granted bargained and sold . . . unto the said Owen Myrick . . . a certain tract of land containing one hundred & eighty acres it being a part of a quarter dividend of land and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at Owen Myricks and William Harrisons corner tree saplins corner trees thence along Owen Myrick line to a ded [sic] gum on the Fort Road thence along the said road 62 poles down the said rode [sic] to a red oak a corner tree thence a straight line to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Saml. Francis and witnessed by Jesse Edwards (his mark), Lazerus Williams (his mark), John Norrad (his mark), Dinna Edwards (her mark), Martha Kelley (her mark), Will. Warwick, and Joseph Phipps (his mark). MEMORANDUM that peasable [sic] & quiet possession & seizen of the said land & hereditaments within mentioned to be granted was had & taken by the within named Owen Myrick the bargain . . .
