Benjamin Johnson Jr.'s will dated April 15, 1812 in Iredell Co.,NC, named children Eleanor Hicks, Ruth Bennett, James Johnson, Asa Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Lydia Lovelace, Rachel J. Albea, John Johnson and Baker Johnson. He also gave 50 cents to the children of Jeremiah Johnson, deceased. Benjamin came from Maryland and settled in the northeast part of Iredell Co., NC.He was one of the trustees to whom the deed to the first lot of land belonging to Mount Bethel Methodist Church ("Prather's Meeting House")in Turnersburg Twp. was made. In 1798, he bought from Isaac Holmes, 220 acres on Soaking Branch, Hunting Creek.
In 1799 he bought from Jacob Nichols' estate, a plantation adjoining the "Life" Nichols Place on Little Dutchman Creek, later known as the Smith Place. In 1804, he deeded part of this land to

In October 1777, Benjamin Johnson was in the 3rd Maryland Regiment, Col. Mordecai Gist, Commander and Lt Clagett's Co. in the Revolutionary War. His Revolutionary Record from the National Archives, dated October 1778, consisted of only one muster card # 35617449, stating he was paid 16 pounds, 3 shillings and 4 d. for 6 months and 14 days service.

Asa Johnson was born September 11, 1775 in Maryland, and died May 09, 1846 in Iredell Co., NC. He was buried in Snow Creek Cemetery, Iredell Co., NC. He married Sarah Sally Lovelace Abt. 1798 in Iredell Co., NC, daughter of Charles Lovelace and Sarah Robey. She was born November 21, 1777 in Iredell Co., NC, and died March 24, 1852 in Iredell Co., NC where she was buried with Asa at Snow Creek Cemetery.

In Asa Johnson's will of May 7, 1845-Feb.1846, he left his plantation to wife Sarah in the care of Asa F. Johnson and use of Negroes Barney, Pinkney, Polly, Delph and her youngest child, then to Asa. Son Jeremiah to have Negroes Milus and Jim and 65 acres where son Amos lives.
Daughter Courtney Sharpe to have Negroes Albert, Harriett, William. Daughter, Lydia Tomlinson to have Negroes Stephen and Caty. Son Wilson to have boys Curtis and Amos in trust to son Asa for use of daughter Elizabeth Tomlinson, then to her children the Negroes Adaline, Mary, Vera, Wesley. Grandchildren Sarah Stone, Caroline Jane, Pinkney and Amos Johnson.

His land, where he lived, reared his family and died was on the middle Fork of Rocky Creek, Iredell Co. This land was bought from 1797-1805 in several deals from W. Nesbit, James McCreary and Andrew Kilpatrick.

Asa and Sarah were members of Society Baptist Church near Cool Springs, NC where they were "received by experience" on April 27, 1833.

Courtney A.Johnson was born November 08, 1816 in Iredell Co., NC, and died Aft. 1845 in Cherokee Co., AL. She married Claibourne I. Sharp, who owned a mercantile in NC. He died in Alabama. both are buried at Lively Cemetery, Goshen, AL

Amos Lovelace was born November 02, 1797, and died 1855. (Will: 1856, Iredell Co., NC) He married Tabitha Tomlinson March 13, 1821, daughter of John Tomlinson and Tabitha Summers. She was born July 06, 1803, and died 1878 in GA.


The children of Amos Lovelace and Tabitha Tomlinson are:
    i. Amos Lovelace, born June 20, 1823.
    ii. W.E. Lovelace, born January 10, 1825.
    iii. John M. Lovelace, born March 09, 1827.
    iv. James Lovelace, born May 31, 1831.


Sarah Lovelace was born December 06, 1802, and died February 06, 1864 in Iredell Co., NC. She married John Tomlinson 1820, son of John Tomlinson and Tabitha Summers. He was born September 12, 1798 in Iredell Co., NC, and died July 01, 1855 in Iredell Co., NC. Their property was located south of Clarksbury Methodist Church, Iredell Co. Both are buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC.

Harriett Lovelace was born in 1804. She married Thomas Franklin Tomlinson 1825 (Will: Bet. February 14, 1846 - February 1848), son of John Tomlinson and Tabitha Summers. He was born November 22, 1809 in Iredell Co., NC, and died 1890 in VA.


The children of Harriett Lovelace and Thomas Tomlinson are:
    i. Franklin Tomlinson. Franklin Tomlinson was mentioned in father's will, receiving Negro boy Silas, valued at $200.00 as well as the tract where Lucas Lovelace lives to hold in trust for John's daughter Tabitha Lovelace and her children. Thomas Franklin was executor along with brother Basil and brother-in-law J. Wilford Turner. He was living in Grayson Co.,VA by 1860.
    ii. Infant Tomlinson, born June 08, 1832 in Iredell Co., NC; died June 11, 1832 in Iredell Co., NC.(Burial: Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC).
    iii. Dolphus Tomlinson, born February 1842 in Iredell Co., NC; died December 05, 1842 in Iredell Co., NC. He was buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC
    iv. Martha Tomlinson, born October 1843 in Iredell Co., NC; died January 1844 in Iredell Co., NC. She was buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC


Elizabeth Lovelace was born in 1805, and died May 27, 1880 in NC. She married Alvin Howard 1835. He was born 1801, and died December 08, 1845 and was buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC.

The child of Elizabeth Lovelace and Alvin Howard is:     i. Caroline Howard.


Mary Eliza Lovelace was born 1810 in Iredell Co., NC, and died July 06, 1843 in Iredell Co., NC. She was buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Harmony, NC. Also at Mt Bethel Cemetery, are the graves of two Infant Johnsons, children of Wilson and Mary E. She married Wilson L. Johnson 1824, son of Asa Johnson and Sarah Lovelace. He was born November 20, 1804 in Iredell Co., NC, and died 1884 in Cherokee Co., AL.


Wilson L. Johnson was found in the 1860 Cherokee Co. Census, page 275:

On page 378 of the Slave Schedule #2 for Cherokee Co, 1860, he is listed owning 5 slaves.

He was killed in a cyclone at his home in 1884. He was married three times and fathered 21 children. Children are listed above under "Wilson L. Johnson".
