I would like to thank all my cousins--either by actual relation or by the genealogy hobby-- who have helped make this Hartmann page possible.

The name Hartmann is very common in Germany.  When they came to America, most lines dropped the last "n" on the name.  My husband's line did not.  Two "n"s is the correct German way of spelling the name.

My husband's particular line, Hubert Hartmann, came from Ankum, Hannover, Germany to America in late 1846.  He settled in the Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois area in early 1847.  Luckily for me, Hubert's daughter Mary, wrote out the family history.  As a young child, she went to live with her paternal grandparents in Germany, so I imagine she got the information there.  They had the line all the way back to about 1700 in the Hannover region of Germany.

Hubert Hartmann, and his brother Bernhard who followed him in 1865, owned a brewery in Belleville.  The name of it was:  Fuchs & Loeser, then Loeser & Hartmann, then Hartmann Brothers, then Star Brewery.  Hubert married first Pamelia Leach, who descended from the Messigner/Messenger and Lyon families.  (Click here to goto my Messenger page).  Hubert married second Mrs. Catharine (Lamprecht) Landolt, widow of Charles Landolt who died in the Civil War .  Between the two marriages, he had 13 children, with 10 living to adulthood.

His youngest brother Bernhard married Anna VonBerg (also see as just Berg).  They had 9 children.
