Notes for Daniel Gage:
Daniel Gage was a
soldier in the Revolution, a sergeant in the Massachusetts line. He was at the
Battle of Monmouth and during the fighting rushed forward when the color bearer
of his regiment was shot, seized the flag, and by his actions caused the
regiment to rally and stop the advance of the enemy. A few days afterwards as
General Washington was reviewing the brigade, he stopped at the company in which
Sgt. Gage served, called him to the front, and personally thanked him for his
bravery and soldierly conduct. (See Lapham's History of Bethel, p. 538-539)

evidently served only a short time in this capacity as he is listed as a

Notes for Sgt. John
Gage:
Duane Marshall Gage
presents evidence of a John Gage baptized 21 April 1606 at Kersey, Suffolk
(John Gage of Ipswich, And Some American Descendants [Decorah, Iowa, 1983]).
This is the right name, the right age, and a likely location, but does not
constitute proof; further exploration of this lead would be worthwhile.
Alexander Sessions
deposed on 27 March 1669 that "Goodman Kingsborough's son said [the swine
by the riverside] were his uncle Gage's hogs," suggesting that Henry
Kingsbury has married a sister of Gage, or vice versa, or that the two men had
married sisters. [EQC 4:117; NEHGR 54:260] Whatever the solution it supports
the suggested origin of Gage in southwestern Suffolk, as that was the origin of
Henry Kingsbury.
On 1 April 1633 John
Gage was one of those permitted to accompany John Winthrop Jr. to Agawam
(Ipswich) to begin a new plantation. (Anderson, pp. 721-722)
The names of only a
few of the earliest settlers of Agawam have been preserved. The earliest known
English planter was William Jeffrey, and he must have been at Agawam before
1623 but subsequently settled at Weymouth. September 7, 1630, the Court of
Assistants in Boston ordered the squatter settlers at Agawam to leave, but not
until March 1633 did the Court act to establish a colony there, and then only
to prevent the settlement of a French Catholic colony. The wise and gifted
young John Winthrop, son of the governor, was chosen to lead the expedition of
twelve men of whom only nine names have been preserved: Mr. Clerk (Clark),
Robert Coles, Thomas Howlett, John Biggs, John Gage, Thomas Hardy, William
Perkins, Mr. Thorndike, and Will Sergeant. As there were no roads, the journey
in March was undertaken in a shallop skirting the coast. If the cabins of the
squatters were gone, they would have to live for a time in wigwams or in
underground caves until the time when crops could be grown and the weather
permit the building of more durable homes. Marshes provided salt hay and thatch
for roofs. For food, garden vegetables were planted, turnips, parsnips, and
carrots. There were also pumpkins, cucumbers, wild strawberries, penny-royal,
winter savery, sorrel, watercress and onions. Wild game and fish were
plentiful. Lobsters, according to tradition, weighed 16 to 25 pounds. (A
Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Families, pp. 111-113)
