The Elkins Families

 

Drury Elkins, b 1760, Va, d 1840, Jackson Co., Ind. He married Margaret (unknown), b 1766. They were the parents of William Elkins, Jesse, and Richard.

Jesse lived nearby, and married Nancy Adams.

Richard Elkins, b 1786, d 1815, in the War of 1812. He married Rebecca Stevens. Their children were: Rebecca, Francis, James, Thomas, Muriah, b 1818, and Martha. Rebecca married Isaac Shortridge. Martha married Samuel Stodgehill. Muriah married William Stodgehill.

William Elkins, b 1796, Pulaski Co., Ky, married Rhoda Stevens in 1816. The widow of his brother, Richard. He moved to Freetown, Ind., in 1817, making him one of the first settlers in Brown Co. Their children were: Joseph, Drury, William, Amaziah, Sarah, and Steven. William is buried at Thompsons Cemetery, in Jackson Co.

Drury Elkins b 1819, married 31 Oct 1839, to Nancy Uley

Joseph Elkins, b 13 Feb 1823, Brown Co.(still Jackson Co.), d 19 May 1913, Jackson Co., age 91. Lies in an unmarked grave at Bagwell Cemetery. He married 10 March 1840, Brown Co., Ind., to Tabitha Ferguson. Their children were: Francis, Cerilda, John, William, and Hanna E. Elkins. They owned a farm 3 miles east of Kurtz. The town of Elkinsville is named for his father. Joseph married next to Prudy Lacy, on 3 July 1856, Jackson Co. There was also anoth wife, Elizabeth A. Edwards, when he was 78, and she 50.

John, b 1848, married Sarah Kinworthy, 1868, Jackson Co. Daughter of John Kinworthy and Sally Hatton.

Francis, b 1841.

Cerilda, b 1853, married Lemuel Borders.

William, b 1842, d 1939, Brown Co. He married Adeline Charles. 1870 census showed son, J.W., and Joseph, age 3.

Hanna E. Elkins, b 1841, d Jan 1910, Jackson Co. She married 10 Jan 1861, Jackson Co., to Eli T. Shortridge. Their childre were: Mary Canzada, Pearl May, Laura, and James. After Eli's death she married Richard Collier.

Mary Canzada Shortridge, married Thomas Tobias Cordell. They were this writer's great-grandparents.
