Haslam: surname origin

spelling variations: Aslam, Aslen, Aslum, Haslem, Haslum, Heslam, Hesleham

Two explanations have been observed, one of English origins the other of Sephardic origins. I am looking for word root data for a possible Sephardic history. Please contact me if you have information.
1-One who came from Haslam (hazel land), in Lancashire: or from Hasland (hazel grove), in Derbyshire.
From the Old English word hoeslum (dative plural of Hoesel) which means hazel. (Smith,p.216)

2-This explanation comes from a conversation my father had with a fellow from Spain. Haslam is evedently common in a Jewish region of the country there and is known to be 'Sephardic.' It may not have originated in England but was carried there with migrating families.
