Martin Hasselbeck

Martin Hasselbeck is the son of Jacob and Katherina Hasselbeck. Martin was born in Bavaria on October 17, 1851. According to census records Martin arrived in the United States together with his sister Margaret on August 31, 1868 aboard the ship Bellona. He married Agatha Betz, daughter of George and Monica Betz, who was born in New York arround November 1851.

They had five children, one boy and four girls. The boy's name was Martin. The girls were Mary, Barbara, Elisabeth and Clara.

Martin started off in business as a coffee extract manufacturer and later transitioned to cheese. Martin Hasselbeck is the founder of the Hasselbeck Cheese Company. During the milk shortages caused by WWI and WWII Hasselbeck Cheese was sold by the family to Borden, Inc. He was a prominent and well known businessman in the Buffalo area. He was also politically active as a Republican, in 1898 he served on the Erie County Board of Supervisors representing the thirteenth ward of Buffalo.

Martin died on May 17, 1911 and his wife Agatha died on July 17, 1920. They are interred in the family plot at the United German and French Cemetery in Section NN Lot 188. Also interred in the family plot is Agatha's brother Valentine Betz who was born ca. 1838 and died on March 28, 1890.
