INTRODUCTION
BY ABRAM HILL
PAGE 2
It is well known to men of great observation that
a retrospective
view of times and events long gone affords pleasure
to the mind.
This circumstance is so obvious that poets and orators
have
never failed to avail themselves of the advantages
it affords. In proof
of this, see 105th and 106th Psalms, and no doubt
this was very pleasing
to the pious Jews in their devotional exercises in
the Synagogue and Temple.
For the orator, see Stephen's defense before the
Council in which he
recapitulated the Jewish history from the call
of Abraham down to
his own time and his application had such an influence
as to procure
to the orator a Martyr's Crown.
Another advantage may be gained by the following
memories:
(page 3)
Our relations are already scattered all over the
Western World,
and no doubt will spread still farther, and if at
any time they might
come into contact by adverting to the various names,
dates and locations
contained in their memories they might come to a
certainty whether they are
related. If so, the recognition would be hailed
as a friendly feeling as in,
"Bone of our Bone and Flesh of our Flesh."
(page 4)
The native place of our ancestors was near Belfast,
Antrim County, Ireland.
I Generation - David. (Wife's name unknown
My Great Grandfather's name was David; he had five
sons whose names were;
II. Gen.
1. James (our line M.E.L.*):
2. Robert;
3. David;
4. John;
5. Thomas and, by a second marriage, another
son named
6. Ephraim. None of my Father's
(Robert) Uncles came to America except
Ephraim.
My Grandfather, James Hill, was married to a woman
in Ireland named Elizabeth
Sloan, whose family was Stephenson, being previously
married to a man of the
name (Sloan). My Grandfather, James Hill
came to America in the year 1740. His
first settlement was in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
He afterwards moved to
York County, Pennsylvania, where he died in August,
1765.
II. Gen
My Grandmother came to Carolina in 1768 where she
died in 1775. Ephraim followed
a sea-faring life until about middle age, when he
married a woman name of Ann
Holiday. He settled first in this (Iredell)
County, but afterwards
moved to South Carolina, and finally to Livingston
County,
Kentucky, where he died at a great age and left a
family in good repute.
(Their names do not appear. M. E. H.)
My father had two Aunts who came to America.
I think they were my
Grandmother's sisters. (Their names Stephenson)
One married a John Wilson
who raised a family near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The other married a
Charles Moffitt by whom she had two sons, Robert
and John.
They came to Carolina and settled in Cabarrus
County.
Robert Moffitt died childless, but John Moffitt raised
a
family which I think are all gone West. John
Sloan, my Grandmother's
son by her first husband came over with my Grandfather's
family and settled near Philadelphia.
My Grandfather (James Hill II Generation) raised
five sons and one daughter:
III Gen.

3. James; 4. John; 5. Thomas;
6. Jane.
III Gen.
Robert, my father (son of James and Elizabeth Stephenson
Hill) married a
Margaret Stephenson by whom he had two sons and one
daughter, Viz;

3. Elizabeth (died when four years old)

had one daughter and
five sons, viz:

My Father came to Carolina in 1763 before
any of the above named children
were born. (children by Logan
wife) He settled in this county (Iredell County,
North Carolina) where his mansion is
still to be seen occupied
by his grandson (VI Thos. M. Hill) (Note
- this same
homestead is now owned by James (VII)
Lola Hill's children M. E. H. 1925). (*Woodrow Hill M. E. L.*)

8. Peggy; 9. Mary; 10. Dorcas;
11. Jane.
All are still living in this county except Richard,
who is in Georgia.
IV Gen.
Jane married a James Stephenson and died childless.
IV Gen.
James, my half brother, son and Robert and Mary Logan
Hill was never married
and died June 14, 1833 aged 66 years. (He died in
Tenn., leaving some land
there which he deeded to his brother Stephen's
son's, Thomas M. and Milas W.
Hill. Milas rode horseback out there,
sold the land, and carried the money
back in a belt.)
(page 9)
IV Gen
Abram and his father, Robert, were soldiers in the
Revolutionary War.
IV Gen.
(Mary Logan Hill is said to have reaped a field of
grain and done other farm
work while her husband and stepson were away at the
war. (husband Robert,
stepson, Abram)
Stephen was seven years old and remembered
and told these incidents. Cousin
Phipps Hill, Arkansas, says it was a field
of rye that she reaped. Her
stepson, Abram, told her he hated to go and
leave the rye ready to harvest.
She told him to go on; that she and her little
children would reap the rye
and put it in the barn)

a John Wilson by whom she had a son
named William Wilson. After John's
death, she married a man by the name
of Elliott and was living in Lafayette
County, Kentucky, the last time I heard
from her.
Thus I have brought down my account to the fifth
generation and here I close
this historical part of the above memories.
But, before I lay down my pen,
I feel disposed to drop a hint to any of our connection
that may read these
lines. I wish to remind all of our kinfolks that
we are the descendants of
pious ancestors. yes, verily, the Hills were a holy
people. In their
doctrinal views they were a strictly Calvanistic
family, attached to the
Presbyterian form of government, doctrine,
worship, and discipline as
exhibited in the various formulas of the Church and
I would advise
all to adhere to those forms of sound words as I
cannot think ever were or
will be altered for the better.
(page 19)
I will make an exception here.
If, in the course of Divine Providence, our lots
should be cast into such
places as would render it altogether impracticable
to enjoy the means of
grace according to our desire; in that case, I think
it would be right to
attach ourselves to some of the Evangelistic Churches
which may be most
convenient and whose sentiments and usages are most
congenial to our own.
early all the churches will admit members into their
communion upon accreditable
testimony of their good standing in religious society
without requiring any
peculiar test to gain admittance.
I now conclude by requesting all to turn a gracious
promise once made to the
church into a prayer.
LORD, POUR OUT THY SPIRIT UPON OUR SEED,
AND THY BLESSING UPON
THY OFFSPRING! AMEN."

"July 3rd, 1863 - About 2 o'clock we were
ordered to charge one of the most impregnable
batteries, I think, that ever human beings
tried to take by cold steel. We made a very
successful failure in the attempt; our loss
was rather heavy in killed, wounded, and
prisoners. I was wounded in about 200
yards of the Yankee batteries in the right heel
with shell. This battle was at or near
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania." (Papa told

HISTORY OF THE HILL FAMILY
Our Grandfather's Christian name was James.
He was born near Belfast, Antrim
Co., Ireland, about the beginning of the 18th Century.
In the land of his
nativity he married a widow Sloan, who had one child
by her first husband,
named John. His descendants are now living
near Phila., Pa. The original
name of that widow Sloan was Elizabeth Stephenson.
Then our ancestors James
and Elizabeth Hill, his wife, emigrated to America
in the year 1740 with
their family and landed at Phila., Pa. James
Hill left in Europe 4 brothers;
Robert, David, John and Thomas. His first settlement
in America was in Chester
Co., Pa. He afterward moved up to York Co.,
Pa. and settled on a creek called
Yellow Breeches where he died in July, 1765.
He left four sons: Robert, David, James, and John.
His youngest son, Thomas and daughter died of an
infectious disease
introduced into his neighborhood from a ship.
Thomas was 19 years old
at time of his death. Jane had been married
to James Hampton by whom she had
one daughter, Bettie, now living in Woodford Co.
Ky and married to William
Elliott.
Robert Hill, eldest son of James Hill, was born 1728
and in 1757 married
Margaret Stephenson, daughter of Abramham Stephenson
of Antrim Co. Ireland.
Abramham Stephenson embarked for America in the year
1740, but died on
his passage. His wife and two daughters, Margaret
and Jane landed at Phila.
and settled in Chester Co., Pa. Jane there
married Hugh Wallace whose des-
cendants reside in Kentucky and adjoining states.
Robert Hill, after his marriage, first settled in
Bucks Co., Pa., where he
had born to him 3 children, Abraham (Abram), Betsy
and James. James died
in infancy in Bucks in 1763. Robert then moved
his family to York, where
in the space of 3 months he was bereaved of his mother-in-law
Stephenson,
his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Betsy.
They are all buried at Dill's
Meeting House. His family then consisted of
his eldest son, Abraham. Early
in 1765, he married his second wife, Nancy Logan
and on the first day of
October same year, he set off form N.C. with his
family and reached his
destination in Iredell Co on last day of same month.
Here he settled. Here he lived and here he
died on the 11th day of June, 1800.

History
of the Hill Family
Copied
by Phipps Brevard Hill
Our
grandfathers Christian name was James. He
was born near Belfast, Antrim Co., Ireland about the beginning of the 18th century. In
the land of his nativity he married a widow Sloan who had one child by her first husband, named John.
His descendants
are now living near Phila, Pa. The
original name of that widow Sloan was Elizabeth Stevenson. These
our ancestors James and Elizabeth Hill his wife emigrated to America in the year 1740 with their family and landed
at Phila. Pa. James
Hill left in Europe four brothers; Robert, David, John, and Thomas. His
first settlement in America was in Chester Co., Pa. He
afterward moved to York Co., Pa. and settled on a creek called Yellow Breeches where he died in July, 1765.
He left four
sons: Robert, David, James and John. His
youngest son, Thomas, and his daughter died of an infectious disease introduced into his neighborhood from a ship.
Thomas was
19 years old at the time of his death. Jane
had been married to James (Page 2)Hampton to whom she had one daughter,
Bettie, now living in Woodford Co., Ky married to William Elliott. Robert
Hill, eldest son of James Hill was born 1728 and in 1758 married Margaret Stephenson, daughter of Abraham Stephenson
of Antrim Co., Ireland. Abraham
Stephenson emarked for America in year 1740, but died on his passage. His
wife and two daughters, Margaret and Jane landed at Phila. and settled in Chester Co., Pa. Jane
married Hugh Wallace whose descendants reside in Ky and the adjoining states. Robert
Hill after his marriage settled in Bucks Co., Pa where
he had born to him 3 children:
Abraham,
Betsy and James. James
died in infancy in Bucks Co., in 1763. He
then moved his family to York where in the space of 3 months he was bereaved of his mother-in-law Stevenson, his
wife Margaret and his daughter, Betsey. They
are all buried at Dills Meeting House. His
family then consisted of his eldest son, Abraham. Early
in 1765, he married to his second wife, Mary Logan and on the first day of Oct in that same year he set off for
N.C. with his family and reached his destination in Iredell County on the last day of the same month.
Here he settled.
Here he lived.
Here he died
on the 11th day of June, 1800, aged 72 years, 10 months, 17 days. the
fruit of his 2nd marriage are James, Stevenson, Jane, David, Robert and Joseph. Joseph
departed this life on 26th of Aug. 1806 in 30 years of his age. The
others are all living at the writing of this sketch.

Mr.
P. B. Hill
Dear
Cousin,
I am by nature a historian. This
year I finished a copy of my mothers people back to 8 generations ago, dating to the first King coming over.
Dr. Rockwell,
a Presbyterian divine wrote the first part of it long ago.
Now I am at work on the Hill history written by your grandfather Abraham Hill in 1837.
He was then
in his 80th year and lived five years after that. Will
you kindly give me some information to go in (Page 2) it as I have made a copy of the part written by Uncle Abraham
and by searching old family bibles have brought the whole of it up to date except a few of the far out kin.
My history says Abrahams mother was a Margaret Stephenson, their were two other children; Joseph,
who died in infancy, and Elizabeth, who died when 4 years old. His
father, Robert, married a Mary Logan after Abrahams mothers death. There
were six children by this marriage - Jane, James, Stephen, David, Robt., and Joseph.
(Page
3)
Abraham married a Prudence Hall by whom he had 7 sons and 4 daughters.
1. Hugh
died in La. Aug. 5, 1823
2. Robert
3. James
4. John
5. Richard
6. Joseph
died in infancy
7. Samuel
8. Peggy
9. Mary
10. Dorcas
11. Jane
Now, which of these was your father? What
was your mothers name before marriage? Please
send me a list of all your brothers and sisters names and when they were born and who they married.
Have you
their family
bible? Who
was your wife? And please send me a list of your children, when born, etc., and also of your grandchildren.
I want your
fathers and your family complete in my history.
Now, the second thing. I
have your last letter to Papa in hand. Please
give me all of Judge Robt. Andrew Hills genealogy that you know. What
was is fathers name, etc? My history says David married a Rhoda Andrews and went west. Was
this his father?
Now thirdly, you know that Hugh W. Hill invented the hog ring. He
made a lot of money by it. He
died at his last home in Decatur, Ill. Can
you tell me who his father was? Also,
who was his mother? Hugh
died a number of years ago and Decatur paper (they sent paper) containing a history of his life work out there
and his picture. It
says he married a Miss Eliza J. Stevenson who was a native of N.C. I
have all his children and grandchildrens names in my newspaper piece about his death.
Papas grandfather was Stephen Hill, a half-bro of Abraham.
Is Abraham also buried at Bethany and is his grave marked. There
is to be a Sunday School rally at Bethany tomorrow but we are too busy to go.
Papa is able to go about some now. Was
at church again Sabbath. Coz Bob Hills sister, Jane Almeda is very low with heart trouble.
No visitors
allowed in her room. If you or cousin Annie (Annie was P.B. Hills daughter. JLH) will answer this I shall greatly
appreciate it. With
love to all.
Mrs. John W. Summers Statesville, N.C. R.F.D. 2.
I have an old notebook which has been passed down through my family. Its condition is poor, and many of the pages
are crumbling. I have attempted to transcribe what I can from this record, but much of it is lost. One page reads
as follows:
"Robert H. Hill was born Sept 15, 1898 in Iredell County, North Carolina, on the North Fork of the Yerkin River.
His education was principally superintended by his father, Abram Hill although he attended various schools.
About the year 1818 he went to Stokes County, North Carolina to acquire a knowledge of the art of (farming?)
with Mr. (Donle?). After spending nearly 3 years in that section, he removed to Laurel District, South Carolina
and established a (yard?) in connection with Dr. Young, where he remained nearly four years. The death of his
brother, Judge Hill (Hugh Hill JLH) of Louisiana called him to that region and the settlement of his deceased
brother's (ownings?) required his attention for two years or more thereafter. He made several trips on horseback
from N. C. to La, and traversed a section of country principally inhabited by Indians and wild beasts. On one
occasion he had the honor of traveling several days with the Marquis Lafayette (garbled) visits to the United States.
(section of page lost) 10 November 1829 he was united in marrriage with Sallie A. Hall, daughter of (?)
Hall of Iredell and settled in the congregation of Bethany of which church he became an elder and was a very
prominent and distinguished citizen of the county. After suffering amputation of a limb, and an illness of 5 weeks,
his life was terminated 22 Dec. 1862. He died in full possession of his mental faculties. He died admired by all
who knew him for his extensive information the blandness of his manner and his cheerful and christian deportment.
Many embarassments clouded his way through life of a pecuniary character but his fortitude was never shaken,
and all demands were met and discharged as they became pressing. They were however, sufficient to prevent his
indulging in any (?).
