Josiah Hayden Josiah Hayden was born January 13,1763 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas Hayden and Mary Ball. When he was about four or five years old, Josiah's father, Thomas Hayden, died, leaving a widow with five young children. The young Josiah was then committed to the care of his uncle, Samuel Hayden, also originally from Sudbury, but then of Monson, NH. (That part of the now extinct town of Monson would become what is today Hollis, NH.) Josiah became Samuel's heir, and succeeded Samuel to the Hollis homestead, becoming a prosperous and successful farmer. He also laid the foundations for an extensive milling and lumbering business, which would be carried on by his son and grandsons. Josiah married Mary Patch of Hollis in 1797, and together they had nine children, Mary, Samuel, Lydia, Josiah, Sarah, Thomas Walker, Daniel, Willard and Susan, all of whom survived to maturity. Josiah Hayden died February 23, 1816, and lies buried in the North Cemetery.
