                                    HEDGPETH FACTS AND FINDINGS

Vol. 1, No. 2                            Bakersfield, CA 93305                            June, 1978

In the last issue your opinion was sought on several thoughts, one of which was
the reprinting, so to speak, of lineages that already appeared in the HEDGPETH NEWS-
LETTER. Not all of you have expressed your opinion, but those who have feel the
lineages should be printed in CROSS-KIN. Among the reasons that were given, there
was one that I hadn't considered which I think is probably the best reason of all -
some have updated their information since it was printed in the HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER.
With this in mind, as they come in, all lineages will be printed including those that
may be printed heretofore in the NEWSLETTER. (Unless, of course, you express a desire
that they not be printed.)

So many of you have responded so graciously with material to include in CROSS-KIN
that it is a thrilling and satisfying feeling to know you are making this your family
exchange medium. It is obvious that some of you have. spent a number of hours research-
ing and preparing this material for us. Letters have come in expressing gratitude for
items that were printed in CROSS-KIN, as they were just what some of our people have
been seeking. And that is what makes it all worthwhile. On behalf of all of the
"family," I thank you very much.

But DON'T STOP now! Keep up the good works. Even though some of our material
doesn't lead us to the next generation (and, of course, that is one of our goals), it
often helps us gain insights into the personalities of the Hedgpeth family, and it
will help in building a family history (another one of our goals).        AA

        OOPS!! Please correct your p. HH 2, line 2 to read addressed - not addresses;
line 4, same page to read Elijah - not Elijan.

On p, HH 17 there is listed the family of Isaac W. Hedgpeth on the 1850 Census,
Ripley Co., Mo. Dist #177. One of our good members happen to notice that same family
is listed in the HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER as being in Ray Co., Mo. and asked for a confirma-
ation as to the actual county - Ripley or Ray.     This sent me back to the library, but
I am happy to report that the reference in your CROSS-KIN is correct. It is Ripley
County, Mo. - not Ray County.

made history.     Their ostensible object in America was to obtain land, but like
most external aims, it was secondary to a deeper purpose. What had sent Ulster
men to America was a passion for a whole freedom. They are ideal men, shrewd
and courageous; zealous to the death for an ideal."

                                                    ***********

The Carolinas were founded in 1663, Charles II gave to eight proprietors
vast tracts to reward his helpers. Even before this some people from Virginia
(Ralph Hudspeth) and some persecuted Quakers had already established a little
settlement along the banks of the Albemarle in what is now North Carolina
(Ralph Hudspeth II son Carter was born in Granville County North Carolina (1747).

                                                    ***********

In 1670 Charleston, South Carolina settled. No one was troubled because of
religion. Soon slaves were laboring on many broad plantations which had been
developed on the banks of the Carolina River. Settlers soon came. Many persons
worked in the pine forests of North Carolina in getting pitch from the trees.
From this pitch, tar and turpentine were made, articles of great use to English
ships. The colony was soon flourishing. In 1712 Carolina was cut into two
colonies. They had no starvation and struggle as in Virginia.

From Grandfather's tales of North Carolina History, by R. B. Creecy, page
52-53, "it was the outgrowth of a Scotch colony who migrated from their parent
hive and settled at a Scotch settlement first in the north of Ireland where they
became identified with the Celtic race by intermarriage and the adoption of their
habits and customs. They were a combination of the warm blood of Ireland with
the steadiness and tenacity of the Scotch Coventer. It combined Irish wit, viva-
city and impulse with Scotch sobriety and earnestness - a rare combination of
contradictory qualities, resulting in wonderous alchemy.

This was a grand element in our population. The Irish element caused their
migration to the New Land beyond the seas, where broader fields with less restraints
of the rigid rule of government invited them.

About the middle of the 17th century they landed upon the shores of Pennsyl-
vania and there abided for permanent settlement. But the staid character of the
Quaker population did not suit their progressive temperment and they sought a
home in Carolina where lived the "freest of the free" where the Irish blood could
find a congenial home.

From Pennsylvania there came a stream of Scotch-Irish and planted themselves
in sections of Alabama, Menkleburg and adjacent states, planted there by wise
providence to await the unfolding of a great drama in which they were to play a
part.

They brought with them their preachers and their school masters, their creeds
and their confessions; made the mountain population that gave us our leaders in
the crisis of our struggle for independence of our state.

They gave us the martyrs of Alamance, whose patriotic blood was the germ seed
of the Revolution. They gave us Micklenburgs immortal Declaration of Independence
whose primal bugle note of freedom yet sounds in the grateful ears of patriotic
sons of our loved mother state."

Samuel McDowell Hedgpeth, b. 22 July 1817, Tenn. M. (1) Sarah C. Wilson, b. 9 March
1825, d. ca 1856, Lincoln Co., Tenn. They were married 16 Dec 1841, probably in
Lincoln Co., Tenn.

Dr. Samuel McDowell Hedgpeth and Sarah C. Wilson Hedgpeth had 8 children (Lucinda,
Mary, Margaret, Susannah, Xantippe C. (listed as Charlotte or Charlotta on some census -
probably couldn't spell Xantippe.     I believe C. stood for Charlotta), Sarah, John, and
America.

After the death of first wife, Sarah C. Wilson, Dr. Samuel was found in 1860 in
Madison Co., Ark. census. He was listed as widower with five children (Mary, Susan,
Charlotte (Xantippe), Samuel, and John. These dates and all names except two are
exactly as in our family Bible. So Samuel should be Sarah (same dates as our Bible).
I'm guessing "Sarah" wasn't written very plainly, so they guessed it to be a boy,
Samuel, named after his father. I always thought she was the youngest daughter and
John the only son. I don't remember America being mentioned, but the Bible and the
census show America dying as an infant and last child. I believe she and mother
Sarah C. died same year - no proof yet on the latter.

Their 6th child, Sarah Olive, was my grandmother. She was born Jan. 17, 1853.
She married William Hiram Cecil Sept. 4, 1870 at Kingston, Ark.

Wm. H. and Sarah O. Cecil had 9 children, six living to adulthood. They were
Keller, Belle, Maude, Joe Walter, Jessie and Moe [Mae?]. No. 5, Jessie was my
mother. Their children were all born in Ark., probably Kingston, Madison County.

My gr grandparents, John Cecil and Mary A. Davis Cecil are buried in the Cecil
family cemetery on their farm just outside Kingston, Ark. I have visited their
graves and have pictures of the markers. The dates on the markers are the same as
in our family Bible.

My gr grandparent, Samuel McDowell Hedgpeth, is buried in Upper Camp Ground
Cemetery, near King's River near Kingston, Ark. His first wife, Sarah C. Wilson

was buried in Lincoln Co., Tenn; his second wife, Julia Anna, was buried in Cal-
ifornia. There is a vacant site by his grave - in next plot are buried his daughter
Susan and her husband (more about them later.)

My grandparents, Wm. Hiram Cecil and wife, Sarah 0. Hedgpeth, are buried in
Greenhill Cemetery, Lindsay, Garvin Co., Okla.

Maybe Mrs. Reaves will send us the dates she mentioned from her family Bible for
our next issue. I'm sure some of the other descendants will appreciate having them.

From one of our members came a letter telling about running across the strange
name of Beady Hedgpeth Loe and wondering if any of us knew who she was or where she
fit in the Hedgpeth family. Quite by coincidence Fran Nelson had just sent me the
book, LIBERTY HILL-BRUSH VALLEY-FRIENDSHIP, compiled by Eva Loe McDuffie, 1974,
Monroe, LA, which tells who Beady was. We certainly want to thank Fran for her
efforts in our behalf. If anyone ties in with this branch of Hedgpeths and wants
more information than will be printed in this issue, let me know and I shall be
glad to check it for you. Inasmuch as this book deals more specifically with the
Loe family, only the information concerning the Hedgpeth family will be used here.

                                    THE HEDGPETH FAMILY

Ancestry of Beady Hedgpeth wife of Stephen P. Loe

I. John Hedgpeth, Sr. was the first of the names found in America.     It is likely
that the name was originally spelled Hudspeth, which pronounces Hedgpeth. In that
case the family was in Virginia by 1600.

II. John Hedgpeth, Jr. and his wife, Mary of Nansemond County, Virginia deeded to
Thomas Speight of same place, 100 acres on Horse-Pen branch adjoining William Speight,
It being where John Melton lived in 1717 ... A Culbert Hedgpeth was a witness to
this transaction. This record makes it appear that John Hedgpeth, Sr. had at least
two sons, John, Jr. and Culbert. N. C. Historical and Genealogical Register Vol.

III. p. 129 Abstract at Edonton, N. C. (See Isle of Wight Co., Va.)

of land adjoining Thomas Speight, March 1732. Testers John Dawson, Thomas Speight,
Moses Hare. N. C. H&G. Vol. 2-609

On August 1, 1748, Henry Hedgpeth of Wight County, Virginia paid L-15 to John
and Margaret Woodard of Edgecomb County, N. C. for 100 acres North of main Black

1792 - Benjamin Hudspeth, wife Milly, Giles, Morgan, John and Sarah.

1797 - Giles Hudspeth and wife Elizabeth, Rachel, John, Charles, Martha, Harrole
                    and Mary.

[At this time I just happen to have from Sutro Library Fred A. Olds book, ABSTRACT
OF NORTH CAROLINA WILLS . . . and there are a few mistakes in the above, e. g. John
Hudspeth's wife was Mercy; Benjamin's third son is listed as Johnson, not John; and
on Giles, the next to the last child is Hannah, not Harrole. AKA]

After 1748, the Hedgpeths name dissappears from Nansemond and Isle of Wight
Counties, Virginia records and the name begins to appear in North Carolina in the
counties of Edgecomb, Wayne and Bladen. It seems evident that Henry Hedgpeth moved
to Edgecomb County, N. C. (See his heirs - Edgecomb).

III.     Benjamin Hedgpeth born about 1720-15, probable son of John Hedgpeth, Jr. mar-
ried Charity. He was living in Bladen County by 1757, where his son John was born.
Benjamin was drowned in Lumber River before 1790 as his widow Charity was listed in
that year's census in Robeson County which was a county taken from Bladen 1789.
Peter Hedgpeth, with a young family was next door. Charity Hedgpeth was still living
in 1800. She was listed with 2 females 10-16 and three slaves. Peter had left Robeson
and moved to __________ South Carolina, where he left a will. Living next door to
Charity in 1800 in Robeson County, N. C. was her son, Arthur Hedgpeth. His family that
year included 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-46.

Children of Benjamin and Charity Hedgpeth:

END OF MATERIAL FROM LIBERTY HILL-BRUSH VALLEY-FRIENDSHIP

Mrs. Marguerite Cassell has sent us a sketch on Joel Hudspeth taken from Anna Ford's
Vol. II: (No page numbers appear on the copies.)

                                                     JOEL HUDSPETH

Joel Hudspeth was born in a very troublous time, two days before the Declaration
of Independence was signed, July 2, 1776, and most likely, in Surry County, North
Carolina, for that is where his brother, William was born two years later. He was the
son of George and Judy (Ran) Hudspeth (Vault in cemetery, Franklin, Kentucky). He was
married in 1801, at the age of twenty-five, to Nancy Clack (November 5, 1782 - M.
Hudspeth1s Bible). They were no doubt married in Warren County, Kentucky for that is
where Sterling Clack was living in 1801 (Second Census of Kentucky). Most of his
life was spent in Kentucky.

True to the Scotch-Irish instinct that was in him, Joel was soon busy acquiring
land; on December 21, 1801 he and Joseph Hudspeth entered land on Drake's Creek in
Warren County, Kentucky. Joel entered 200 acres and Joseph entered 400 acres on the
east side of Drake's Creek to which he was entitled.

                                                FACTS AND FINDINGS                           HH 37

In September of 1801, Joel and George Hudspeth witnessed the purchase of 300
of land by Joseph Hudspeth from Thomas Hightower. It seems that Joseph could
have been the uncle of Joel for when Joseph died in 1809 he made his brother, George,
Sr. his administrator. Also, William named a son Joseph, who was born the same year
Joseph died. But if George was a son of Ralph who died in Surry County, North Carolina
in 1776, he did not mention a son Joseph.

By following tax records and census reports we are able to make a brief sketch of
his life.

On January 18, 1802, Joel, George and Joseph Hudspeth and others composed a jury
to examine the damages resulting from the erection of a Water Grist Mill on Drake's
Creek by David Hudspeth. The damages were assessed at one dollar.

In 1803, Joel had 300 acres in Warren County and by 1812 he had 505 acres in
Logan County, and adjoining county west of Warren County. At this time he had two
blacks and eighteen horses. Horses were very important at this time as a means of
transportation, and any young man worth any thing at all acquired a horse, first of
all, and second, a wife to make his clothing.

When Simpson County was formed in 1819 and the county seat was located on his
brother William's land, 225 acres of Joel's land fell in Simpson County.

In 1824 Joel began to feel politically minded, and he ran for State Representa-
tive of Kentucky and was elected to serve in the Kentucky Legislature from 1824 to
1825. The second permanent capitol burned November 4, 1824 while he was serving.
Meetings after that were held in various public buildings until the Capitol building
now used for housing the State Historical Society was built in 1827-1829.

By 1827 Joel Hudspeth owned 1080 acres in Simpson County; at this time he had
five blacks and six horses.

No complete record of Joel and Nancy Clack Hudspeth's children has been found,
but after thirty years of searching, we have definitely accounted for eleven; there
may have been one other, Robert. Cousin Lizzie Morris of California wrote that there
was a Robert of this group. A Texas Hudspeth wrote that he thought the father of his
grandfather Robert was Joel—that may be. The following may not be the order in which
the children were born.

        1.     Malinda, born                 ; died February 16, 1841. Married Dr. J. M. Tannihill.
        2.     George Washington, born January 14, 1804; died February 16, 1875. Married
first Mary E. Ward, second Elizabeth Jane Wigglesworth.
        3.     Sterling Clack, born                 ; died June 27, 1841. Married Elizabeth
                Myers.
        4.     Samuel Mumford, born September 18, 1808; died April 14, 1878. Married Sarah
                Elizabeth Hudspeth.
        5.     Narcissa, born                 , 1811; died August 28, 1879. Married Nathan
                Hudspeth, son of William.
        6.     Elizabeth, born June, 1812; died March 16, 1862. Married De Sha Bunton.
        7.     Amanda, born                  ,1817; died March 10, 1850. Married Joseph Hudspeth,
son of William, April 22, 1834.
        8.     Caroline, born                  ; died                  . Married George Thompson,
                brother of Edward R. Thompson.
        9.     William Lynch, born                  1824; died July 21, 1904. Married Sophia
                Hudspeth, sister of Samuel's wife.

HH 38                                            CROSS-KIN

        10.   Cinderella, born April 16, 1825; died June 27, 1859.
        11.   Julia, born 1826; died April 12, 1884. Married Edward R. Thompson.

In a letter written by Cousin Jane Tannihill, granddaughter of Joel Hudspeth,
to Texas kin, she stated that when she taught in the College in Simpson County she
was told that Joel Hudspeth had the handsomest children in the county.

Transylvania Medical College was at its height when Joel and William Hudspeth's
children were growing into manhood, so they decided to send each his oldest son to
that college; therefore George W. and Nathan became doctors. Nathan's descendants
say he did not practice for money, but for the good he could do.
