                       HEDGPETH-HUDSPETH
                         Controversy

June - 1974 (comments from Dr. Joel Hedgpeth)

HEDGPETH is, as far as I can be sure, one of several American variant
spellings of HUDSPETH. This name is still extant in its region of
origin, the border country of Northumberland near Newcastle on Tyne.
Once several families thrived at Corbridge, but none live there now.
There is a place named Hudspeth about 30 miles north of Newcastle,
near the ancient town of Elsdon where the dead from the battle of
Otterburn (Percy and Douglas) are buried. The present tenant of the
farmstead of Hudspeth (admirably chosen for at least three escape
routes) is a man named Anderson; who pronounces the name in the
Northumbrian way, Hedgespeth, but no Hudspeths are buried - or at
least recorded as buried at Elsdon, although it is only about a mile
away, Apparently in the 13th century they moved south some 20 miles
to Corbridge and left their name (which evidently means "covered path")
in this lonely isolated spot. Two of the houses lived in, by Hudspeths
circa 1400 to 1650 or so still stand in Corbridge. In the mid 17th
Century the Hudspeths began to move out and evidently came to Virginia
on almost the first boat. There are still about 50 households of
Hudspeth or Hudspith in the Newcastle area.

Note: A map of this area accompanies this issue of the Newsletter.
It was obtained by Dr. Joel Hedgpeth and sent to us via
Merle Obenchain ..... Thank you both!

HEDGPETHS AND HUDSPETHS by WHATEVER SPELLING - Ann Theg Brown
There have been families in the present United States named
HEDGEPETH, with spelling variations, and HUDSPETH, with spelling
variations, since before 17OO. They appear to exist as two separate
groups since those early Virginia records. The complications of the
name spellings are extensive. Hedgepeths find their name spelled as
Hudspeth. Hudspeths have their name spelled as Hedgepeth. Each
basic spelling has a number of variations.

Many, many years ago Mother and I were among the first if not the
first to suggest the families may have had a common origin. Certainly
we knew some of our own identifiable family records are spelled as
Hedgepeth.. Our theory was based on the pronunciation still used by
her family. After all, Mother is the third generation since 1770 and
the daughter of RALPH HUDSPETH - 1851 and his first cousin's grand-
child SARAH HUDSPETH 1809-1891.

They pronounce the name, very quickly, as Hedspith and frequently
the spelling HEADSPITH or HEDSPETH and sometimes HEDGESPETH was
used. This is the pronunciation still used by our family living on
the original land grant in Illinois, and same used by the Hudspeths
and others still living in England.

We began with my grandmother's statement that her Hudspeths were
Scottish. Until recently any other number of locations were sug-
gested as original location points. In 1954 we located the first

							-18

group of Hudspeths in and around ,Corbridge, Northumberland County,
England, on the Scottish border. The hamlet of Hudspeth lies north
of Corbridge, Since then this has been accepted as the original
location for the Hudspeths since their first records are there in
   the. 1350s, written in Latin.

Whether or not the Hedgepeths and Hudspeths were the same or separate
families prior to 1700. is still an academic question. I do not
have a firm opinion, although I originally suggested they were the
same and still think I may be correct. I often remember, the family
tradition of Frances Hedgepeth of Shreveport telling of three bro-
thers coming to Virginia and selecting different surnames., Mother
considers this well within the Hudspeth character, the thought is
supported by some of the known records of Corbridge prior to 1700
and by those who have visited Hudspeth. They indicate the location
is still inaccessible and was not built for visitor's convenience.

I may be a double Hudspeth but I have always researched Hedgepeth
with Hudspeth. Because the families have existed in the United
States as separate groups since about 1700, I earnestly suggest the
NEWSLETTER [stay with records of the various spellings of Hedgepeth
until the resources are exhausted. Quite frankly, the Hedgepeths Will
be immediately overwhelmed by oceans of Hudspeth data if you include
them ..... my own files on Hudspeth would keep things going for
many years. I do believe the spellings of Headspith and Hedspeth,
even if the individual is known to be a Hudspeth, should be included
   and with identification when possible.

   FROM: BETTY F. HEDGPETH - Sept. 1974
The Hedgpeths of my husband Melvin's family seem to have migrated
from North Carolina into Tennessee sometime after the Revolutionary
War. Jeremiah Hedgpeth, born 1785 in North Carolina, is the earliest
(so far) probable ancestor of this family, appearing on the 1850
Lincoln, County, Tennessee census with several other family groups
that seem to tie in with one another. He apparently migrated to
Tennessee before 1810, when David M. was born.

David Macagar Hedgpeth and Samuel McDowell Hedgpeth, Melvin's,
grandfathers, were brothers (his grandparents William and Ida were
first cousins). According to family members, they were born: in Mem-
phis, although Goodspeed's History of Northwest Arkansas gives their
birthplace as Lincoln County. This has since been verified. David
was a mule raiser and Samuel, a physician. Both were Masons. Be-
tween 1850 and 1860 Samuel and his family went from Lincoln County
to Madison County, Arkansas, as evidenced by the two county census
records. His first wife, Sarah, shown on the 1850 Lincoln County
census, was not listed in Madison County in 1860, so presume he
married his second wife Julia Anna Gibson, in late 1860.

							-19

Samuel and Julia had four chiidren. Daughter Ida (Laura Ida on
some records) married David's son William, who had left Tennessee in
1876 after studying medicine under Dr. Cutter in Dresden, Weakley
County. He travelled to Madison County, Arkansas to visit his Uncle
Samuel, and while there fell in love with and married Ida. He later,
after the death of Samuel in 1875 and the birth of two children,
attended Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, receiving his medi-
   cal degree in 1884.

William carried on his father-in-law's, medical practice in King-
Ston, Madison County, raised six children, including Melvin's father,
and in about 1889, brought the family to California, following Ida's
mother, Julia Anna Hedgpeth, and her remaining children who had pre-
ceded them to California about 1882.

William settled his family in San Lucas, Monterey County, prac-
ricing medicine and operating a drug store. They moved to Santa
Cruz around 1899 and in 1905 settled in Paso Robles, where Dr. Will
and his wife established the Hedgpeth Sanatorium, which they operated
with the assistance of daughters Pearl and Myrtle, until W11iam's
   death in 1916 and Ida's in 1917.

William's sister Martha L. married Isaac Emmons and lived in
Hunt County, Texas. She was mentioned in William's obituary, also
in Goodspeed, the two of them having survived other children in the
   family.

Julia Anna Gibson Hedgpeth, born in 1837, survived her husband
Samuel McDowell Hedgpeth by many years. She lived with her daughter
and son-in-law, Pearl and Paul Lorensen, in Santa Cruz, where she
died at the advanced age of 93. Julia and Samuel's son Matt
settled in Arizona; Newt and four sons and their families all
settled in the Santa Cruz-San Jose area.

ABOUT JEREMIAH HEDGPETH (from Betty Hedgpeth) There are two
Revolutionary War pension applicants from North Carolina, Abraham
and John Hedgpeth, either one of whom could be the father of
Jeremiah. Both were born 1761, Abraham in Nansemond Co., Va., and
John in Duplin Co., N.C. John seems the most likely, as he was
living in Rutherfold Co., Tenn., when he received his pension,
whereas Abraham died, probably in Nash Co., .N.C., where he had
lived when he applied for his pension at age 70.

Nothing now known about Jeremiah's line ties in with the
Virginia and Kentucky Hedgpeths. Is there anyone out there with
   Tennessee and North Carolina Hedgpeths?????

Note: Newsletter p. 15 - Stella's JERMIRAH should fit into this
line.... born 1814, Lincoln Co., Tenn. Stella and Betty
working together may find some answers.

A BIT ABOUT THE ELUSIVE LEMUEL !!!!
from Dr. Joel Hedgpeth - June 1974

"According to what I have in hand, Lemuel Hedgpeth was born in
Virginia 1755 or 1757 and was with Washington at Valley Forge. The
National Archives has no record of this, but I note they don't have
records of other Hedgpeths who were granted land for Revolutionary
service. The story is that he had both legs broken by a cannonball
 at the Battle of Brandywine.
I think our branch of the family came from Henrico Co., Va."

"James Henry Hedgpeth [son of Lemuel] was born in Virginia 1779,
(1784 acc one record) and died in Kentucky. Alleged to have been
a friend of Daniel Boone. He married Ruth Jones, born 1786, a
native of Wales. Maybe this is where story of descent from Welsh
  bards got mixed into things.*

"He had six sons and five daughters Joel, born 1809, was my great-
grandfather and was born Greene Co., Kentucky and died at Millerton,
Calif. 1875. He is buried at Academy, California (just east of
  Fresno).

"I do not find much about James Henry [jr.], brother of Joel. He
married Eleanor Elliott whose sister Eliza Jane married his nephew
Thomas Riley Hedgpeth which makes one sister another's aunt.
James Henry [jr.] shows up in 1866 working for the transcontinental
railroad - Union Pacific. He lived near Dallas, Oregon and was
influential in Masonic affairs. Maybe you should ask the Masonic
  historian if there is one."

*Note: The Welsh tradition is very strong in our branch -- specific-
ally, children of James Henry Hedgpeth, jr. And further advances
my theory that traditions are best carried on through the women in a
family .... Mama kept the girls busy at their tedious chores with
story-telling! I am happy to have this persistent tale laid at the
  proper door-step. FN

SOME NOTORIOUS HEDGPETHS - It is always fun to discover that all of
our ancestors were not perfect: (This from Ann Theg Brown via 1970
  letter from Leona Hilton)
"A wilder member of the H. family is MARION C. HEDGPETH, b. Prairie
Home, Cooper Co., Mo. on 14 April 1856, parents unknown. No one
wants this one, I guess, although Dr. Hershel H. says he remembers,

							- 23

vaguely, a great-uncle visiting and telling about Marion. Maybe if
I scratch deeper I'll have to hide him in my closet. He served a
number of years in a Kansas City Prison and was shot to death Jan. 1,
1910 in Chicago while attempting a robbery."

ANOTHER INTERESTING ANCESTOR ;(Via a querie from Dr. Joel Hedgpeth)

Now, if somebody can tell me who the Hedgpeth was who won $10,000
from Gov. Pico of California in a horse race in 1850, I wiI1 be
grateful. All our people that I know anything about were still in
Missouri then, did not start West til 1858. Maybe somebody came out
   West on a fast horse!

WHO WAS BENONI HUDSPETH ??? In 1849 Benoni Hudspeth and john Myers
blazed a trail off the Oregon Route known, as the Hudspeth Cutoff.
Their route headed straight west to intercept the Raft River Road
to California. It was less tortuous that the prior one, and, soon
great hordes of gold seekers were eliminating the northern leg to
Ft. Hall and taking the Hudspeth Cutoff.

XI- LEMUEL HEDGPETH b. 1750-55 (in Va.) d. (in Ky.?)

*son of Henry Hedgpeth ( ____-1779) and ______________
        md: _______________ to Lydia ___________

      **Children:
        XII-1. Holland b. ca 1775 Va. d. ca1831 Ky. m. Mary Tate
        XII-2. Nancy b. ca 1777 d. m. Edmond
							      Holloway
        XII-3. Bethany b. ca 1779 d. m. David Jones
						   Halifax Co. Va. 1788
        XII-4. Lewis b. ca 1782 d. ca1864 m. __________
        XII-5. James H. b. ca 1784 d. m.l)Ruth Jones
                                                          2)M. Pickerell
	XII~5. Sarah b. ca 1790 d. ___________ m. Isaac Romans
	XII-7. Lydia b. ca 1793 d. ___________ m. Arch. Ratliff

*Note from Rachael: Isle of Wight County, Va. Deeds prove that a
portion of the land sold by Lemuel Hedgpeth and wife, Lydia, in the
year 1781, was the same that had been purchased by Henry in 1750.
While this does not necessarily prove the relationship of Henry and
Lemuel to be that of father and son, it does indicate a strong
   possibility.

							- 24

*Note from Alice Hall: Lemuel is probably not a son of Henry and
his wife Mary, since he is much older than proven children. Henry
may have married twice, and Lemuel may have been from a first
    marriage.

** Children of Lemuel: (from Rachael) This probably does not
constitute a full list of the children of Lemuel & Lydia.
While absolute proof is lacking, I believe the first five
children mentioned above, plus Lemuel and Lydia, to make up
the household of Lemuel as listed in the 1790 Census of Va.
as a resident of Halifax Co., Va., his household contained
"seven white souls", and the Census is based on the 1785 Tax
      List.

Note: The change in the spelling off the name Hedgpeth to Hedgspeth
is not a typographical error. Holland Hedgpeth, tentatively listed
as generation XIII, spelled his name Hedgpeth, as did Lemuel.

                                                	- 26

Coleman Hedgspeth spelled his name thus, as did his daughter,
Jemima C. (Hedgspeth) Asbury. Present day descendants of South-
Central Kentucky spell their name Hedgespeth.

Following is a reference from Leona Hilton 1970 (via Ann Theg Brown)
She has the facts generally correct, but not exactly. I'm using it
here because of the novels referred to which seem to have been taken
from the Joel Hedgpeth Wagon-trip to Calif. 1858-59. (Full account
in a later issue of NL):

"According to my records Joel H. moved to Buchanan Co., Mo. about
1838. He lived prior to that in Washington Co., Mo., briefly. He
moved to Nodaway Co., then on to Calif. Several of Joel's children
traveled by wagon train to Calif. in 1858. The train was ill-fated
and nearly all died from Indians and starvation per Cleland's "Cattle
on a Thousand Hills" and "The Journal of John Ualell". The H's
survived and settled in California and Arizona. It seems they were
buddie-buddie with Barry Goldwater's grandfather (this from Hershel
H.). It is interesting to note that a Mr. Holland was also a member
of this wagon train. (This information from the San Bernardino, Calif.
   Library)"

      Dear Hedgepeths/by whatever spelling,

Turkey-day fast approaching and Santa Claus
on the heels .... Will any of you have time to read
the Newsletter? Never mind, it will keep, but we
are looking forward to more good material for future
      issues.

This issue filled easily and I'm sorry not to
have had room to use everybody's data...if it isn't
here, it will appear soon. Also, do not forget that
I'm depending on you to keep me honest .... if I've
made a mistake please let me know.

Also I feel that the rest of you want to keep
the records faithfully .... I can only write what
people send to me. If your information is incorrect
I think you would appreciate revisions ..... but
right or wrong .... "nothing ventured, nothing gained"
.... we need your queries and information.

I believe I'll begin the 1858-9 California Wagon
trip story next issue ... it is quite long and since
many of you probably have copies, it will only be new
to some. So, I'll do just a couple of pages each issue
..... or shall I do the whole thing as z special edition?
It is a nuisance to have it broken into segments .....
What is your pleasure? Let me know!

Along the trail somewhere in Arizona, I hear
that one of the Hedgpeths carved his name & date ..
that we can see it for ourselves ..... where? ....
who? ..... has anyone a picture?

            Enjoy your turkey!

                                 Best regards,
					[signed Fran]

      P.S.
I'm advised that we can get
      some free advertising in D.A.R.
publications if we can supply a
      registration number .... This will
be a valuable source of information for
      us! Registration number .... anyone?
