ALONZO E. DARBY one of the well
known prospectors of the Lake Chelan country was born in Plumas county,
California, on December 19, 1858. His parents were R. R. and Susan
E. (Townsend) Darby. The father was born in Alabama and raised in
Tennessee. The mother was born in North Carolina and had two brothers
who fought in the southern army during the Rebellion. The other children
of the family besides our subject were Flora L. Savage, Letitia Kendrick,
Rosa E., and two others who are deceased.
Alonzo E. was educated in California and early
turned his attention to mining, following the same there for many years.
He is now taking a course in the Scranton School of Mines, Pennsylvania,
making himself proficient in the science needed in his work. In 1900,
Mr. Darby came to Chelan county and soon began prospecting. For some
time he helped to operate a pack train from the head of the lake to the
upper mines. He finally located two claims ten miles from the head
of Lake Chelan.
In 1879, at Santa Anna, California, Mr. Darby
married Miss M. P. Simms, and two children were born to them, a boy and
a girl, both of whom are deceased. Politically Mr. Darby is entirely
independent.
