GUSTAVE A. HENKEL was born in
Lancaster, Wisconsin, on October 15, 1866, the son of Henry M. and Wilhelmina
(Hoff) Henkel, natives of Germany. They came to the United States
in 1860. The father followed farming and hotel keeping until 1885,
when he died, being in Wisconsin at that time. The mother is living
in Cassville, Wisconsin, now aged seventy-three. Gustave was educated
in the common schools of Wisconsin and as early as seventeen began work
for himself. He went to Dakota and wrought on a farm until 1888,
in the fall of which year he landed in Spokane. He operated at different
things until 1897 when he located in Sprague and opened a liquor store,
which has occupied his attention since. He owns the building where
he does business on Main street and also a cottage in the residence portion
of the city. Mr. Henkel was chosen a member of the city council in
1900, which position he has held continuously since, being in that office
now. He has the following brothers and sisters, Jacob C., Mrs. Elizabeth
Menziner, Mrs. Ann Jeide, Louis W., John J., and J. C.
On November 9, 1898, Mr. Henkel married Miss
Jessie McDonald. Her parents, John A. and Agnes (Irving) McDonald
were natives of Scotland. The father died on June 7, 1900.
The mother was in Canada at the time of her death. Mrs. Henkel has
one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Mary Sirginson, John A. and William.
To our subject and his wife three children have been born, Merle G., Gustave
E., and Arta G.
Mr. Henkel is a member of the F. A. and is
an industrious and progressive man.
