NEW RAILROADS

Editor, Pantagraph: Permit me through your paper to tell the citizens of Bloomington, of eastern McLean County and Livingston County, Illinois, why I think there can be sufficient aid raised during the present year to grade, tie, and bridge a railroad northeast from Bloomington to some other railroad connection. Nearly every farmer living in Blue Mound, Martin, Lawndale and Cropsey Townships, McLean County; and also living in Belle Prairie, Livingston County, Illinois, are compelled to visit their respective towns or places where they do their business about once per week; necessitating them to travel from 15 to 25 miles per week depending upon the distance they live from railroad stations, which traveling during each and every year makes the enormous sum of 780 to 1300 miles which traveling is a loss of some 52 days labor with teams and necessary expenses, which loss is equal to one hundred or more dollars to each and every farmer yearly. There are upwards of 115,000 acres of arable lands in their townships, the proceeds of which lands, must be marketed yearly — the hog crop being uncertain and cattle cannot be handled here to a profit. It is about an average day’s work to take the product of one acre of corn or hay to a shipping point from this territory, which labor the farmer usually does when he regards the price, the best, consequently he has to make special trips to sell this product. Consequently the marketing of one half of the produce of this county will require upwards on 50,000 days labor, a loss to the county yearly of more than $100,000, which sum will grade, tie, and bridge a railroad from Bloomington northeast to some other railroad connection. With sufficient aid raised to grade, tie, and bridge a railroad together with the right of way, there will be no trouble to effect a lease or sale of the whole enterprise to be completed and run by one of the following companies: C. K. L. and C.; Illinois Central; T. P. and W.; C. and St. L. Air Line, and C. and P.
