From Martin J. Bellard

To Jan Bellard and Kim Bellard

Hi Jan and Kim,

My sister Mary and I were talking about the pronunciation of last names. I told her that my dad and I have met some of our cousins who spell their name as BELLARD but pronounce it as BALLARD with the accent on the first syllable with a soft A.

My Dad met Allen BELLARD, and his two sisters Nellie BELLARD and Minerva BELLARD in the 1930's in Wisconsin. They pronounced their last name as BALLARD with the accent on the first syllable with a soft A even though they spelled it as BELLARD. I found all three of their gravestones in the 1980's where the last name is spelled as BELLARD......

My name, Martin BELLARD, is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable as BELLard with a soft E. My line of the family has pronounced our last name like that since the 1840's when my grandpa's grandpa Thomas BELLARD pronounced his name originally as BALLARD with the accent on the first syllable with a soft A. Then one day somebody very badly mispronounced his last name as BALLard where that first syllable sounded like a BALL which bounces. Thomas got so mad that he walked 12 miles to the nearest courthouse and legally changed his name from BALLARD to BELLARD saying that he would rather be a BELL than a BALL. We have never found the actual legal document for this very interesting family legend which has been passed down to my generation by word of mouth.

Last year at the HESTON Family Reunion in Grand Rapids, Ohio, you, Jan, told me you pronounced your name with the accent on the second syllable which sounds like BeLLARD. Do you know any other BELLARD cousins who also pronounce it that same way? When did you or your family start pronouncing it that way?

Kim, do you pronounce your last name as BELLard with a soft E, as BALLard with the accent on the first syllable with a soft A, or as your sister Jan pronounces it as with the accent on the second syllable which sounds like BeLLARD?

Your BELLARD cousin,

Martin

Hello Martin -

I believe it was our uncle Bruce Bellard, former mayor of Bowling Green, Ohio, whom you met. Although I think you met our great-uncle Warren Bellard in Bellevue as well.

The story is that as far back as my grandfather Ernest Bellard could remember (1900), his family pronounced their name "BELLard." He and his brothers, Allen and Warren, grew up in Bellevue. My father Jean and his brothers Ernest Jr and Bruce grew up in Bellevue as well. Allen and Warren remained in Bellevue and their families - to this day - pronounce the name "BELLard." However, in the 1940s, Ernest and wife Leota, moved to Cleveland. They decided to change the pronunciation of their name to "BellARD," the French pronunciation. Ernest had been in France in WWI and was very taken with the culture (which is why my father's name is Jean, which is an unusual spelling for a man in the U.S., but perfectly common in France). My father Jean and his brother Ernest Jr had both moved away from Ohio and for some reason they decided they would go with the French pronunciation as well. My uncle Bruce, however, with close ties to Bellevue even after he moved to BG, continued with the old pronunciation "BELLard." But as he became known in the BG community - affiliated with the university and in politics - because so many people pronounced his name as "Ballard" he decided to go along with that, even tho his name was Bellard.

Today, Jean's and Ernest Jr's family continue with the "BellARD" pronunciation. Warren and Allen's families in Ohio still use the "BELLard" pronunciation. I think Bruce and wife Mary Ann were the only ones to go with the "Ballard" pronunciation.

In our family history, the spelling prior to 1900 varied between Ballard and Bellard. My great great grandfather John Bellard had two brothers who spelled their name Ballard, as did their offspring.

I'm glad we got a chance to meet last summer and it was great to meet the other Heston cousins! Thanks for all the work you do on the family trees.

Jan

To Jan Bellard

Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for telling me that very interesting story of the BELLARD Family. Yes, it was your uncle Bruce Bellard, former mayor of Bowling Green, Ohio, whom I met. And yes, I also met your great-uncle Warren Bellard in Bellevue, Ohio as well. It must have been around the year 2001 and not in the 1980's as I had thought earlier.....

I do believe that I had also met a cousin Donald BELLARD in the 1980's. Maybe it was him who I remembered that had pronounced it as BALLard with the accent on the first syllable with a soft A. I heard him introduce himself on the telephone. And yet on his front porch he had his family name hanging up written as BELLARD. I also think that Donald BELLARD is from a different family line of the BELLARD's who is related to my family line AND to your family line. My memory is coming back as I write this message to you. The Donald BELLARD who I met probably in 1981 lived in Beloit, Wisconsin. He is descended from Daniel BELLARD the brother of my Great - Great - Grandpa Thomas BELLARD.

With your permission I would like to copy - paste your very important story of the BELLARD Family with your name as the author on my HESTON Website on the Guestbook link and on the Family History link. Please just let me know. This will benefit any BELLARD cousin who is seeking to learn more about his or her family. Thank you.

your BELLARD cousin,

Martin

Subject: Chauncy Bellard

Dear Martin,

Ellen Ruland forwarded your e-mail to me. She was married to my brother, David Charles Buckwalter, but they divorced.

Chauncy Bellard was my Great Grandfather. His daughter Marie Bellard married Ernest Polglaze. They had three children: Darlene Marie Polglaze, born Nov. 18, 1920; Ernest Polglaze and Horace Polglaze.

Marie Polglaze was my Grandmother. I believe you said you met her in Beloit (Wisconsin) when you visited my Great Uncle Donald Bellard and my second cousin Daniel Bellard.

To fill in your 9th generation it is as follows: Leslie Claude Buckwalter and Darlene M. Polglaze

10th generation: Kaye Marie Buckwalter, born Feb. 13, 1940 in Beloit (Wisconsin); David Charles Buckwalter, born May 7, 1944 in Beloit (Wisconsin).

Kaye M. Buckwalter is married to Robin Louis Taylor. No Children

David Charles Buckwalter was married to Ellen Ruland and they had three children: Sarah Buckwalter, David B. Buckwalter and Susan Buckwalter

David Charles Buckwalter died in 1994 at the age of 50.I remember going to Platteville (Wisconsin) to visit my great grandfather Chauncy Bellard and his wife Zora when I was a small child. I have a memory of sitting on his lap on their front porch. He was a big, tall man. He knick-named me "Little Iodine" I think I must have been a hand full at that time. Hee, Hee.

I want to personally thank you so much for sending this information to Ellen.

It is wonderful to know we have more family members out there.

My husband Robin Taylor and I live in Mount Vernon, Washington. Address: 535 N. Waugh Road, Mount Vernon, Washington, 98273. Telephone (One - Three Six Zero - Five Eight Eight - Four Nine Five Eight). I am on facebook also.

Have a great day and I hope this further information helps complete your work.

your cousin,

Kaye Marie Taylor

This email message is about the descendants of John Ballard and Sarah Heston's children.

From Earl Kumfer ekumfer@teknology.net

To Martin J. Bellard - bellard1956mj@yahoo.com

Who was our John Ballard? An elusive ancestor. i

John Ballard (1761-1818) and Sarah Heston (1766-1844) are ancestors for many of us. Sarah's ancestors have been traced several generations back to England. But John remains a brick wall.

He served in the Continental Army, we are told. But in which unit? From what colony? There were at least 10 John Ballards serving in the Continental Army from VA alone! 'Ballard' is a common name -- early associated with the James River, the old Rappahannock County tobacco growers and slave owners, the opening of the Shenandoah Valley, and early settlers in what are now WV and KY. Many possible cracks in our research wall.

A recent contact (still anonymous) on Ancestry.com has a John Ballard (b 1761 in Spotsylvania Co, VA) in her family tree. Perhaps she can shed some light on this candidate. This county later was a Civil War battle zone in north Virginia. Another potential crack in the brick wall.

But he could have been from Connecticut. We do know the John Ballard clan of his children and in-laws (Hestons and Newburns) settled in the "Western Reserve" land claimed by Connecticut to settle its federal Revolutionary War debt. That reserve later became the three northeast OH counties of Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning in our Ballard records. Connecticuts Revolutionary War vets (the lists include several John Ballards) may have been granted land there.

The plausible candidates for our Ballard ancestor are too many; the evidence is too thin for any one of them to be our elusive John.

One possible wedge in the brick wall might be to find the Continental Army unit that bivouacked on Heston farm property in Bucks County, PA. Several stabs at it with veteran's records have so far proved futile. Ernest Bellard reported:ii Family tradition has it that John Bellard first met the lady of his choice when he, a Revolutionary soldier, encamped on the Heston family estate. The Hestons, staunch Quakers, were not favorably inclined toward the match and took immediate steps to disinherit the young Quakeress. Quaker proceedings (Thanks, Phil Davis!) confirm congregational efforts to keep Sarah among them. John and Sarah married anyway on 27 Aug 1784 in Wrightstown, Bucks Co, PA.

Despite Ernest's impression, Sarah was not separated from the Hestons. For at least three years John and Sarahs young growing family lived in the area. Tax lists show John was in business with three Hestons (Jacob, Jepe and Eber). Sarah was still in her father's will, probated in Washington Co, PA in 1807. John and Sarah stayed nearby until after the death of both her parents, in Washington Co, PA in 1807 and 1810. Most of Sarahs siblings traveled along the same migration path out of Bucks Co, PA to Fayette and Washington Counties in Pa, and on to Trumbull and Mahoning Counties, OH.

In their final years John and Sarah settled in the present Youngstown, OH area. But we do not yet know enough about Johns first 20 years.

i This compilation of family history would never have been possible without the careful research of Phil Davis, Pat Heston Horn, Lynn Miller Taylor, Debbie Rider, and other cousins.

ii Ernest Bellard, The Story and Record of the Descendants of John Bellard and Sarah Heston, printed in the 1950s or 1960s. I hope to find this source to verify the quote and examine what else is said.
